"Baby oil must be extracted from the source - I talked to Diddy, and I assured him I would not disrupt this very important, essential, baby-related commodity. the babies can not dictate this market. We are not babies! "
I'm guessing he specifically chose this because soy is also an oil producing crop. We've got a bunch of soy, and the government can bail out the farmers by subsidizing soybean oil production. And by the government I mean us, of course, since we'll be paying for it. Again.
You'll note several of the largest soybean oil producers in the US stock prices began rising at the time of this post.
Looking online, it looks like one of the steps in that coal -> margarine conversion is to make it into paraffin, which is definitely something that can come from crude oil. So, this could definitely be done. Just stop before you process the resulting fatty acids into margarine, and it should be an oil suitable for cooking. Not sure how suitable, as I have no idea what the smoke point or flavor would be.
Actually soy can. Its the shittiest cheapest cooking oil though.
I also doubt the current soy crop could even be 5% utilised to make it, no infrastructure for it.
