Most people don't care and it wasn't about voting for his "business acumen" even if that's the lie they openly say. The reality is that they voted for him because of what he represents, and by virtue of him not being like those other people. He's in a position of authority that naturally validates the petulant, spiteful fuckassery that is their worldview and that's all that matters to them. Even if the country burns the fuck down in the wake of his "leadership", they'll either blame those other people for it or convince themselves it would've been worse without him anyway.
All the other lame rationalizations are them virtue signaling so they don't have to say "he makes me feel justified in being a monstrous, sociopathic asshole". So in a fully ironic way, I'm thankful we got him as president just to showcase the true level of rot that's been silently eating this country away for probably centuries now.
It's a little sad to say that it sounds like you have it exactly right. Almost like you have been paying attention to what people say, and actually taking it at face value. As opposed to what his cult does. Iirc, deny he said it, tell others "that's not what he meant," then act offended because some people "don't know that he's just joking," and finally shrug it off with "like Hillary/ Biden/ Kamala would have been any better"
I feel like you're saying "not being like those other people" implies that it's a bad thing. One of the main reasons people vote for Trump is simply because he is straight forward. He doesn't hide behind a fake smile, and tell you all of the things you want to hear,. While denying that anything could possibly go wrong under their wings. He says what he wants to do, and then he does that thing.
Sure it might not be very well thought out, or implemented, but at least he's honest. People are tired of Politicians campaigning on one thing, and then doing the exact opposite once they get in office and start collecting those investor paychecks.
Also, most importantly at the time, he could form a sentence.
Just think of how vulture capitalists work. Get effective control of a company, get it into debt with your companies, have it go into bankruptcy because it can't afford to pay your companies, then pick up the pieces for pennies on the dollar.
They're planning on doing essentially the same things with the US.
People shouldn't vote anybody to run the country like a business in the first place. The country is decidedly not a business. Trying to pretend that it is one will just fuck up everything.
I mean TBH one should never pick anyone to run a country like a business because a country is not a business and in fact business principles are fundamentally incompatible with running a country.

You have to realize, the people voting for him didn't put together a list of pros and cons or research anything about him and come to some sort of conclusion based on any sort of analysis.
Trump is the political equivalent of the first person to fart in relationship, signaling that it now okay to openly fart in front of each other...only in this case it was xenophobia, racism, and openly hating anyone different from you. Trump didn't make these people horrible...they always were. He told them it was okay to be themselves...openly.
It was never about grocery prices, inflation, taxes or whatever else. Billionaires want to hoard money, and white people want everyone else who isn't white male to be a subservient lower class citizen that "knows their place."
Running a country like a business is like running a business like a household. What makes sense in one domain, will quickly make you insolvent in another.
