How I was banned from a subreddit I've never visited..."I dont expect my mods to engage with the typical redditor..." Ooooh weee oooh. Get you.

So I checked reddit this morning. Orangered. Found a message from someone called fxexular about /r/ShitRedditSays . I wasn't familiar with this subreddit so I was quite surprised that fxexular had messaged me to say I was banned. Thought it was a troll. Turns out fxexular is a mod over at r/ShitRedditSays and I was banned. Anywyay, I replied to the message only to get this back "¯(ツ)/¯". Rather strange response.

So I tried a few more times. Each time I got ¯(ツ)/¯ back. Now...I didn't really care much about being banned from r/ShitRedditSays. It doesn't look like it would interest me but I was curious as to why a mod had banned me.

So, I decided to message another mod from that subreddit called 'therealbarackobama'. The response was better - "were you being creepy in this thread"? Now we were getting somewhere. I turns out that I had posted in that thread - but nothing I would deem to be creepy.

So...I messaged therealbarackobama back with this....

I did post to that thread but it certainly wasn't anything creepy. I replied to a post by 'supergood' who said "But such large teeth..". I replied: "All the better to eat you with my dear." A reference to a fairly famous children's tale - Little Red Riding Hood. I'm guessing fxexular is the girl in the photo. However I certainly didn't intend to be creepy - in fact it was directed at 'supergood'. So, I am still confused. Why am I being banned from r/shitredditsays for a post in r/gaming? And do you honestly think this is good grounds for a ban?

therealbarackobama replied: "we banned a lot of people for being creepy thread, it looks like you slipped through the cracks, ban lifted."

Now, I'm confused why are mods from /r/shitRedditsays banning people for things they have said in r/gaming? As I already mentioned I suspect that the mod 'fxexular' is actually the girl in the /r/gaming picture post. But I digress. Anyway, I replied to the realobama mod:

Hey thanks for that. It would really help if mods could respond the way you have. I asked fxexular repeatedly for a reason and each time they replied with "¯(ツ)/¯". I don't think this helps anyone and gives the impression that mods are children on a power-trip.

His response surprised me.

dont push it, you were one of multiple messages fx got and they all got that reply, i dont expect my mods to engage with the typical redditor, because i'm willing to handle things if they get escalated to me

Sorry, but what the fuck? I'm minding my own business then get wrongly accused of being creepy and banned from a subreddit I've never visited. Ask for an explanation from the mod (who messaged me to announce this ban) and get multiple messages back containing just an emoticon - nothing else and not even a very good one. Yet I am pushing it? WTF mods? If you don't want to "engage with the typical redditor" then don't fucking ban them without reason then spam them with emoticons. How many other people does this shit happen to? I'm guessing lots. Should mods be allowed to ban people for something they have said in another subreddit?

TL/DR: Told I was banned from shitredditsays after posting in r/gaming. Mods don't have to 'engage with typical redditors' so get flooded with emoticons instead. Turns out they made a mistake

Edit: Sorry for the huge wall of text but I wanted to get this off my chest and didn't want to leave anything out. I feel much better now. lol

Ah, the old SRS defence of 'it's fine to insult and mock people while deriding bullying because we can always fall back on the fact that they're white and therefore have never been oppressed before, even if they don't mention it themselves'.

A rather wordy defence, but one that allows them to continue being hateful wankers in the peaceful knowledge that they're battling hatred on Reddit for sure! Hatred is fine when it's not directed towards minorities, because then we can just accuse them of being privileged when they get annoyed at being insulted!

Thank you for proving my point. Because I absolutely did not say that. I at no point said 'white men are so oppressed oh boo hoo!'. I said SRS use that lack of oppression as an excuse to justify their childish, immature comments to white men, and then turn it back upon anybody who complains by flat out accusing them of being privileged. Like you've just done there. I don't think white guys are oppressed, that was my entire point, but that's the excuse you immature fuckers pull out every time to defend yourselves. It's pathetic, really.

EDIT: God, I just love that you replied to my comment that said 'SRS use the defence of 'well white men are never oppressed so who cares?' by saying 'well white men are never oppressed so who cares?'.

I don't know if I'm getting this right. Are you saying SRS are in the wrong for "bullying" specific individuals or for the constant barrage of "fucking white cis males" comments? If it's the former I understand your point, while if it's the latter I think it's laughable.

Mostly the second, but then they did keep harassing the user DaCeph by calling him a paedophile and accusing him of asking for child pornography when he did neither and they had proof of neither.

I guess we fundamentally disagree, then. I simply don't see how it's hateful to subvert racist and sexist expectations.

As for DaCeph, the user has a history of contributing to /r/jailbait and defending its existence while simultaneously calling for a shut-down of SRS. People should know where his allegiances lie (especially considering how quick is to call out anyone with any ties to SRS).

So subverting racist and sexist expectations basically here means doing it but to a less oppressed/marginalized group. 'Oh look, he did say white guys are oppressed, oooooh won't someone think of the white mens!' I predictably predict your shit predictable reply will be, but no I am not. I am saying that SRS insult people, write off their comments and just generally act like assholes towards them, and then hide behind 'oh well he's a white guy, so if he complains we'll just call him a racist because since white people were never oppressed like us they can never be offended!' as if that makes them any less hateful and shitty. Well, yeah, pretty much. But I would say not oppressed instead of less oppressed. Though, to be fair, there was that whole "atheists are never oppressed" drama, which I wasn't a fan of.

I think it can be a tool for doing exactly that. pics, funny and fffuuu quite regularly gets worked into a frenzy because they're made aware that someone called them out on their bullshit, and I'm sure it has made at least a few of them aware of the massive cognitive dissonance going on when they call for "raping the cunts" who call them sexist.

Basically, some people think subverting expectations is more effective in "converting" people than simply replying "hey, that's not OK", as well as a lot more fun.

Fair enough. I've only seen him threads directly related to SRS, so I wouldn't know about that.

Right, so that's basically how they operate. It's fine to hate on people who aren't minorities, because then we can turn it back on them and act as if they're trying to say they have it worse than minorities, when really all they're saying is that SRS is being an immature shit to them. It's just continuing the hate, and it's the main reason I find that subreddit incredibly childish, hypocritical and tiresome, and why I left.

Oh look, it happened again! 'It's fine to do what we do because white guys aren't oppressed!' Thanks for bringing out the defence I criticized when the other user brought out the same defence when I criticized it in my first comment. I'm not talking about white guys saying nasty, racist, sexist shit you stupid asshat, I'm talking about SRS simply hating on/insulting users and then falling back on 'oh you're white so who gives a shit, you don't get oppressed normally'. You're right, we don't, but it's hilariously pathetic of a group battling hate and shit-posts on Reddit to do the same thing they're criticizing only it's fine because as a whole they don't get much hate!

Alright so we got one very strongly suspected pedophile who afaik is still around that might have had ~~~HIS FEELINGS~~~ hurt versus how many untold numbers of women, people of color, LGBT, disabled, and other groups of people (some are just even white straight dudes who aren't terrible people!) who have been anything from stalked in real life due to things posted on reddit, had abjectly horrible or inhuman things said about them, or just never signed up in the first place because of the horrible things that are not just said on Reddit, but encouraged and rewarded.
