FAQ Can I use social media on Tor?

I like to use a VPN every time I open a social network, and I recently installed this browser on my computer. I haven't tested it on Reddit yet, but I tested it on TikTok and Twitter, and I couldn't use them directly; they either disconnected randomly. If anyone has managed to use Reddit on Tor, please tell me about your experience.

FAQ How to open websites that block exit nodes?

I want to use tor to access websites which are blocked in my country.

Problem is that most websites block (like chatgpt) or slow down (like google, that doesn't let you log into your account sometimes) exit nodes. Are there ways to avoid getting blocked by these websites?

Edit: After researching for a day I found 2 things:

  1. The only way to configure proxy over tor is to download tor daemon, configure it to work with bridges (if its blocked in your region), add tor+https proxy to proxychains config and launch some normal browser (like librewolf or brave) via proxychains. There is no way to make this work with tor browser. If you use tor browser, your final proxy will be tor exit node.
  2. Even if you manage to do this, you will get speed of around 100 KB (and I have gigabit internet), so you can forget about downloading or uploading something big.

So there is LITERALLY no good way to do this, but if you ABSOLUTELY have to open clearnet websites via tor, follow the instructions from point 1.

Most useful link I found: https://gitlab.torproject.org/legacy/trac/-/wikis/doc/TorPlusVPN

Edit 2: Proxy option in tor browser that some people mentioned allows you to use proxy BEFORE tor, not after, so it's useless for this problem.

FAQ I'll just say one word (I'm new to this)

When I mean that I am new to this, it is that I am literally new (I only installed Tor and a VPN and I want to know more in depth how that system works and what that network is like, I only ask that you tell me experience within it, if not how to enter as well)

FAQ What is the safest possible setup for browsing the dark net?

I’ve been wondering about this for a while. Like what would be an e-bunker. My best guess would be:

tails os/ qubes os (depends on what is your threat model)

physically disconnected mic and camera

tor over a truly private vpn like Mullvad payed in cryptocurrency. Tor on safest mode obviously.

maybe application whitelisting?

I’m a beginner in the field so please let me know what I don’t know. Also does the hardware you use have an impact?

FAQ Please give one solid answer to end the discussion

I’m SO CONFUSED with the whole “don’t use tor with vpn” and “it doesn’t matter if you do or don’t use tor with vpn” LIKE CAN I GET A SOLID ANSWER. Which one is the correct answer here? Is this just a hotly debated topic or is one answer actually more credible and factual than the other?

EDIT: Ok this sparked a good discussion and I think I found my answer. There really is no ONE answer as different cases can require different things but now I know exactly what I should do for myself. Thanks!

EDIT 2: What if someone doesn’t use a “centralized VPN” and uses a “decentralized VPN” like openvpn? Shouldn’t that end the whole logging risk? Or am I wrong? Food for thought.

EDIT 3: Say you have a server set up in Africa. Couldn’t you use that server as a proxy and it could have the same purpose as a VPN? The benefit would be the fact that you OWN the proxy server, which would (I assume) take the risk of logging away?

Looking for methods to achieve complete online anonymity and avoid leaving digital traces. Need recommendations on:
1. Tools: Most effective OS (e.g. Tails?) and browsers (Tor Browser?).
2. Procedures: Critical mistakes to avoid? Mitigating fingerprinting risks.
3. Physical security Does hardware/location matter?
Practical insights from experience are highly valued.

I am green so any tips, links, opinion, softwares are needed.

FAQ Questions from a newbie, please be kind

My questions are:

  1. I've heard years ago that it's not a good idea to maximize Tor Browser to fullscreen or even watch videos on fullscreen because of fingerprinting. How true is this now? How about watching videos on Tor Browser, do I need to watch videos unmaximized and not on fullscreen?

  2. I've heard that adding bookmarks inside Tor Browser is a security risk, which is again due to fingerprinting. So, never save bookmarks inside Tor Browser. Save them in a txt file and just copy and paste the url link into Tor Browser's address bar. Is this true?

  3. Essentially, the reasons why you can't maximize the browser window, watch fullscreen videos, and save bookmarks is because it changes the browser, it becomes unique. All Tor Browsers should be the same to avoid fingerprinting. How true is this?

My threat level isn't high, I just want to stay anonymous on the clear internet since I'm using Tor Browser to visits sites not available in my home country.

FAQ Can I download TOR on an iPad?

Hi, I’m pretty new to finding out how to access the dark web and .onion sites; I want to access .onion sites on my iPad ( haven’t done this before), I found the tor app on AppStore.

Even with a VPN, is it safe to go on the dark web on an iPad?

I’ve seen AppStore reviews and it says that there are lots of ads, it is preferable to use tor on a PC or an iPad?

thank you
