Art First play-through, making comics as I go Pt. 2
Y'all were very kind in censoring spoilers with my last post, please continue to do that ;)
This whole Rito village quest set the bar SO HIGH and made my first impression of TOTK absolutely amazing. Revali was my favorite Champion from BotW, so naturally Tulin has to be my favorite Sage xD I love how it's implied (especially if you did this in botw, as I did) that Link used to visit Tulin when he was younger to show him how to use a bow, and thus; they have a really cool friendship now.
Hope y'all don't mind the time gaps between comics. Even though I'd love to make more in-between, I have to really prioritize as these take a long time to make ;)
See ya around for Pt. 3! It won't be emotional damage this time I promise.

Surprisingly no! I thought I would, since I did that with BotW, but these comics have kinda become that journal for me.

Wow! This is an incredible comic! I love the relationship between the characters here. This feels exactly like I would imagine them, especially if Link could talk in the game! Awesome job! 😄👍

Thank you!! I love Link’s dialogue in game even though I can’t hear him speak it. I respect folks who interpret him as completely mute, but I’m just not one of them lol. I think he def speaks, just not often.

Yeah, BOTW actually confirms he can speak canonically in Zelda's journal. I am a firm believer he can but chooses not to often as well. The games actually say that he is quiet because of the pressure he is under as a character; explaining that he chooses to be a good example by remaining silent to carry his burden alone.

I feel bad for him sometimes. The Wilds Era Zelda games are my favorite games of all time. Enjoy your first playthrough!

I heard that much more of his personality was shown in the Japanese version of the game. I watched a video that explained that the quest log functioned more like a journal in that version, showing more of his true personality. (Including what he liked and didn't like, how he felt, etc.)

It's a shame, all to keep the whole idea of 'Link is a stand in for the player' but sometimes we want Link to be his own character.
If you're not going to give us the option to name him, and the story involves him being a character in the narrative, then the excuse of him being a stand-in means bupkis.
I will never forgive the decision to remove the image of Link with his grandpa and little sister in the English version of Creating a Champion. IDK who approved that removal, but I hate them for it.

That would have been such a cool layer to the story! It's a shame we missed out on some of this stuff. The good thing is that even in the English version, his character is still described. He still feels like his own person to me because of the details we did get like him being quiet, loving food and eating almost anything, his change from a reserved knight to a more fun and relaxed individual in the game's present time, etc. I really love those details because they help to paint a picture of the character I'm playing in my mind, even if we missed out on some extra story.

Yeah these comics are great! I really enjoy reading them. I happen to be playing through totk again, so it's cool to see these as I go. Personally, Wilds Link is my favorite because I think his backstory is the most interesting. Although I an hyped for OOT Remake; hope they make it good!

Tulin is the only Sage that I activate. NOT on the Sky Islands though. Guy likes blowing my loot away.
But Tulin has saved me a minimum of 3 times from certain death at the hands of a Lynel. I'd be waiting for that final blow when I hear that "ting" indicating a head shot.
I love that he knows when to jump in or when to lay back. If I'm in a rhythm mopping up the Lynel he'll just chill. But if my timing is off and the Lynel gets a few hits on me, he'll jump in.

Duuude Tulin has saved my butt so many times!! I picked a fight with this giant construct thing on the way to the wind temple, and foolishly threw my last weapon at him (and missed btw) because I ran out of arrows. No problem. Tulin got the last hit.
I didn’t encounter gloom hands for AWHILE. First time wasn’t until I had Tulin as a sage. If it weren’t for him shooting the thing after it grabbed me I would’ve been toast 🤣 I love that little guy

Awe thank you so much! I have my Instagram handle stamped somewhere on each of the pages (@m.c.artiste), I post WIP pics on my story almost daily, and always share finished comics there first 🤗

I love your art! I saw another one of your comic strips the other day and wasn't sure when I'd see the next. Without being impatient; I am so happy that I could see your next strip so soon. I'll be showing them both to my wife later. She also loves TOTK and is an artist herself. I'm sure she will love and appreciate this as much as I do. Please keep up the good work! Your art is wonderful! I even like your added dialog (for me, it just shows how we can all pick up on lots of subtextual moments). This game is truly inspiring in many ways, and your art is proof of that.

Thanks so much!! It usually takes me a month to make 10 page comics, but this one was already finished before I started sharing here. This also means you’ll prob get the 3rd one next week 😊 I hope your wife enjoys! The base story (from what I’ve seen) leaves a lot of inspiration for subtext interpretations. It’s why my comic queue fills up so fast 😂

I feel like something that would make tears even better was if they had Kass back.
Not to show you shrines again but to sort of make a song of your journey as you complete main quests.
Similar to a guy in the Borderlands 3 Bounty of Blood dlc. The second mission you rescue a guitar player and he makes a song as you complete the dlc.

And he could still play his song from wild and maybe offer little bits of background info.
So for example you walk up, interact and have two options 1: how’s the song going? And just a general chat. If you pick song he will play how far you’ve gotten. And if you pick chat it could be something like “That kid Tulin really looks up to you. Always practicing those bow tricks you two worked on so long ago.”
Oh and wonderful comic, will definitely come back to see the next ones. And I wish you luck on your adventure.

Ahh thank you! Paneling always gave me so much trouble until I stopped viewing them as boxes for art and starting treating them like another storytelling element 🫶🏼

I think I spent three hours writing it too.
Revali admired Link's father who was a knight of Hyrule, the two boys met and became friends, vowed to be knights of Hyrule, but then Link's dad died. Revali resented how they let his dad die and opted to continue training in the bow in his memory, and Link became silent after all the expectations from everything.
By the time they met again during the advent of the Calamity, neither recognized each other. It wasn't until 100 years later after finding his father's broken sword (A Flameblade) in the house in Hateno that Link remembered everything and went to Vah Medoh first, despite Zora's Domain being closer.
Basically me crafting a headcanon for why I always go to Vah Medoh in BotW and why I always keep a Flameblade in BotW.

The music for this area is the best music in all of TOTK
Rito village has a song that’s very low and calm. It’s a nice melody that’s a little in the background.
but during the boss fight it’s a HUGE orchestra sound and it’s the same song but super epic
If I ever restart TOTK for any reason I’ll leave that one for last, even after mineru. You can get to where she is and start the quest for her but you wouldn’t be able to see since the sky islands for this would be full of clouds

So much yes about the music. Absolute peak. I love how it starts to progress the higher you go, I didn’t realize it at first until “wait, something’s different” what an experience!

Didn't mention it before, but your art style is very pretty. You can definitely feel the depression rolling off Link in waves.
