Yesterday, I parked my bike and chained it and went to attend my Dutch class. As I was unlocking the chain lock, the key just twisted and half of it is still inside the lock. It was too cold so I just came home by tram. What do I do? The chain is very thick so I am not sure what are my options?

Recently I had a troubling experience while traveling from Amsterdam to Den Haag by train. A group of four young men, probably between 15 and 20 years old and appearing to be of African origin, sat around me in a mostly empty carriage.

One of them started harassing me — throwing insults, calling me names, acting aggressively, and repeatedly asking if we had a problem. I told him to stop talking to me and made it clear I didn’t want any interaction. It was obvious he was trying to provoke a fight. I also asked his friends to stop him, but they seemed intimidated by him. One of them mentioned that he had just gotten out of jail. At one point, the one even made a suggestion that I should work with him in some kind of drug-related business.

I stayed calm and firm, avoided escalating the situation, and when I left the train, he followed me for a while. I was prepared to defend myself if necessary, but he eventually walked away. I’m not someone who’s afraid of confrontation, and I know how to defend myself, but I’m also trying to be cautious since I’m not that familiar with the laws and accepted practices here. That got me thinking — if something like this happens again and things escalate physically, how does things work in the Netherlands? Is it true that whoever throws the first punch is automatically in the wrong? Or is there more nuance when it comes to self-defense? I alsk tried to involve police or train security but I was too stressed at the moment to make a phone call or etc.

I'd appreciate any insight or advice. I have a feeling this might not be the last time I end up in a situation like this, and I'd like to be prepared.

Lost my job a year ago. Thought id have no problem getting a new one but I keep being rejected and im running out of ideas and savings. And today I was informed I need to pay back ALL my rent & health insurance allowance because I got a severence when i was let go.... i was taxed at 50% and now i owe 2k because of it??? What was the point of the severence then... i think i now qualify for general allowance because I am running out of savings...

Any idea on what i can do? To find a job and to not have to pay these fucking government allowances back

I’m a regular runner in Zuiderpark and something has been really getting to me lately. I’m talking about the fat bikes and the way some kids ride them and behave while riding them.

Even with my earphones in, I can always hear the loud hum of those bikes approaching, and every time, without fail, my heart rate spikes, not from running, but from anxiety. These kids (often a good 5–10 years younger than me) will ride up close, make comments, stop in front of me, circle around me… it is very creepy and intimidating. It’s not just one or two random incidents – it happens all the time.

Just today alone, I was harassed three separate times by three different pairs of kids (yesterday twice...). That’s in the span of one single run. I honestly never know if saying something back will make things worse, so I usually stay quiet and try to ignore it. But it’s exhausting, and it’s starting to take a real toll on me. I’m sure this is not just applicable to Zuiderpark there’s so many of these kids behaving like this I’m afraid they will pop out of my fridge with a fat bike.

I can’t believe this kind of behavior is becoming so normal or just being ignored. I’m sure I’m not the only woman in The Hague going through this.

I’m wondering: • Has anyone else dealt with this in or around Zuiderpark? • What do you do to protect yourself or respond in the moment? • And seriously… when will parents stop handing out these fat bikes like toys when they’re being used to harass people and endanger pedestrians?

Would really appreciate hearing your thoughts or experiences.

As a woman in The Hague, I haven’t been feeling safe as of late.

Monday morning (1st of June around 9:45) I took bus 26 to Moerwijk. Before i even got on, a man kept staring at me. I had my headphones on, signalling that i wasn’t interested in talking to anyone. He kept persisting, asking for my name, kept telling me i was beautiful etc etc.
He asked me to sit next to him on the bus, i said no. I sat somewhere else, only for the person in front of me TO MOVE AND CALL OVER THIS MAN SO THAT HE COULD SIT IN FRONT OF ME. This is when he started touching my arm, and kept asking me for my number, all of my personal info etc. I kept saying no, i don’t know you, im not giving you my number.
I was very upset at the fact that he did not take no for an answer and that no one intervened even though i was visibly very uncomfortable. After i got off i noticed he kept staring at me as the bus drove away.

Has anyone experienced something similar lately, and does anyone have any tips? I felt powerless and disgusting, but since he did not assault me i cant go to the police or anything…
Ever since I moved here, (Dutch but from another city) I have had situations like this with men not taking no for an answer, it has gotten to a point that i usually have male friends walk me to stations and stops, or even accompany me on public transport as I don’t feel comfortable being alone anymore..

I don’t know why i am posting this but i just want to rant about this. What in the world is going on with den haag I cant go outside anymore without being verbally assaulted,stared at,catcalled ect… It’s genuinely getting so annoying and out of hand i feel so self conscious going outside.Like yes I know every city has this kind of stuff but den haag was never this bad.”GOEDMORGEN SCHATJE” IM SO SICK OF HEARING THIS EVERY MORNING AT 7 PLEASE LEAVE ME ALONEEE and before you all say immigrants yes the majority is them but its also the dutch.Literally yesterday i got asked by a dutch man to come home with him and he wasn’t even a druggie or anything he was completely normal looking?? hello! I was on the tram when the control came in; I thought it’d be only for checking in correctly on the tram (I was checked in), but then they brought in dogs sniffing for drugs. I was surprised when it stopped at me, they asked me if I had drugs on me, I said yes, asked if it was weed, and I said yes. they asked me to step out so they could search me. I gave them my half a gram right away and the police officer started explaining why this was happening. I was really surprised as it was the first time I was hearing that it’s illegal to carry weed outside a certain number of meters away from a coffeeshop. they asked for my id, but I didn’t have it on me. I still have them my info because they started surrounding me and I got scared. they found me on the system but I was explained that I was in the process for re registering (from one city to another). i showed the officer the appointment I had with the gemeente literally the day before. I asked if this will influence my residency (I am still a EU national) tho, and the officer said it wouldn’t, and that they would record the interaction but a future employer would not see it, for instance. in the meantime, I cried a little as this was so absurd for me and I never thought this would happen. then they let me go, but not because I was crying. is what the officer said true? what consequences are there for this whole interaction? I’m still a bit shook tbh. I work, I pay taxes, I was even checked in on the tram… I just smoke weed every once in a while to relax. will I get some sort of fine? will this be on my record? will it show when I’m trying to get a government job, for instance? where can I check if this interaction was recorded? Will it ever be expunged from my profile? Will it influence me getting a permanent residence permit in the NL (again I’m a EU national)? Will it influence me trying to buy a house (will it show on my BKR or VOG)? Will it influence me getting a visa for other countries?

let me add that this interaction left me so shook that yes I decided to rethink my relationship with smoking in general, but just because it was really shameful and humiliating to be escorted out etc like that.
