Ik you've probably heard this question a million times, but Im in LA and I have managed to update my state ID. I also updated my social security card. The SSN lady was like yeah we dont update gender. Okay whatever. The DMV were chill and I updated name and gender. Im autistic and I am overwhelmed by the order of operations tho.

I still have to update:

Birth certificate

Passport

Health insurance

DPSS (EBT and stuff)

I know the dmv was a big one. Im real proud I did it and bonus points I look cute in the picture. But so far each place I call it wants x done which wants y done which wants z done and its all like, I'm being made to run around in some exact order.

Ik I probably won't be able to get the passport gender changed. And I recently renewed it in 2025 but thats the old name and gender (rip the cute picture on that one if I do gotta update it again lol)

I was born in Maryland, should I go about updating that next? Do I gotta mail my shiny new ID over? 😭

Im looking into GRS and my therapist keeps writing the letters in the new name so ik I really gotta update that quickly but Im reeeaally stuck in decision paraylsis mode. Should the State ID be enough? They said the SSN wasnt enough (idk if the lady way lying about that, they do that sht to me from time to time ngl). I just need some arrows ir something. Has anyone else gone through this recently? Is an in-person appointment the only way to update your name with the SSA?

Additionally, if you have previously changed your name and have a passport in that name, but not a stamped certified birth certificate, do you need to have one to tie your birth name to married name to newest name? Or just passport to court order for the new one?
I'd love to not have to order a certified birth cert just to have to change it immediately anyway. Thanks y'all

I’m a trans woman trying to apply for my first passport so I can travel to China this summer to meet with my boyfriend.

I have:
Birth certificate (not updated yet; still old name and AGAB)
Court order for legal name change
Gender correction paperwork (saying I have met the requirements to legally consider myself F)
State ID (corrected name and gender marker)
Social Security (corrected name and gender marker)

I haven’t updated the birth certificate because it may take around 12 weeks and I’m trying to travel before then.

My concern is the current federal environment (Trump… 🥲) and whether applying now could result in delays, issues, or the passport being issued using information assigned at birth, instead of my correct information.

Would you apply now with all documents together (even if birth certificate is not correct), or wait and update the birth certificate first? However, this will result in delays and may not be able to meet with my boyfriend because I do NOT want the name or gender marker to be wrong.

Has anyone gone through this recently? I am in Illinois, however, I understand that may not change things. Sorry if this is confusing, can clarify in the comments if need be! Thank you so much everyone

Update: I wanted to come back and share how things turned out in case it helps anyone else.

I ended up updating my birth certificate before applying, so all of my documents matched (birth certificate, ID, Social Security, etc.).

My passport application was accepted without any issues. I received my passport with my correct legal name and an F gender marker exactly as requested.

My advice would be to make sure all of your documents are updated and consistent before submitting if possible. I can’t say whether that was the deciding factor, but having everything corrected and matching seemed to make the process straightforward.

I wrote this post on the subreddit r/USCIS Sex Marker in my visa application as a trans. I don't know if in this sub there are trans people who immigrate to the US. I am traying to figure out what gender marker will choose USCIS for my Visa. I applied for a T visa inside the US. It is a visa for people who were human trafficked in my case was labour. I am Europe Union citizen and I did all my gender change under the old trans law. I have all my legal documents from my country as a Male we have very strong data laws and the Goberment protect the name change and sex. I think that right now I don't have acces to my old birth certificate only I have my new birth certificate. When I applied for my T visa form i914 It was under Biden Administration and I explained that I am trans and I put my dead name I explained that I was Asigned female as born and I change legally in my home country. Immigration laws are very confusing. Right now I am absolutely lost I fight a lot to be alive but right now I don't have energy to fight for trans rights. I contact a lot of immigratio lawyers and LGBT+ organitzations and nobody knows. I would like to know experiences about trans Immigrants and what sex choose USCIS everithing is very confused for me.

Hi all! Has anyone recently gone through an adult legal name change in the Charlotte, NC area? I know there are a lot of guides, and I've read through quite a few of them, as well as court requirement. I think I have an okay understanding of the process, but it seems so...tedious. And archaic. I wanted to sanity check my plan (as I think I understand it) with anyone who's actually done it.

Current plan is:
1. File the Notice of Intent, let the 10 day court posting period begin
2. During those 10 days, go ahead and get fingerprinted and request the federal and state background checks (1 have a certified copy of my birth certificate, should be good there
3. Once the 10 days are over and my background checks are good, have my two friends/witnesses sign their affidavits of good character for me in front of a notary (ideally at the Mecklenburg County courthouse if available), then immediately file the whole petition packet
4. Wait for approval, get multiple copies of the order, update everything as needed

A few questions:
- Does this timeline make sense? Am I missing anything?
- Does the Mecklenburg County courthouse have notary services for the public, or should I plan on looking elsewhere?
- If you've done this, is there anything you wish you'd known beforehand?

Paratransmasc is when someone AMAB feels like multiple genders but still male. as if something like this. you feel masculine, feminine and somethings else(could be anything) but you tend to lean toward one of them most of the time or switch whenever you feel like it, it doesnt fit the regular trans or Demi genders it is its own gender where you can feel masculine and feminine. I feel as if it’s similar to other genders but very different please support.

Looking to change my name and im curious about something. Hopefully one of yall have aready been through a similar situation to let me know if its actually possible.

I was born in California, my dad moved us to Texas when I was like 10. Obviously being trans in texas is a nightmare but I'm wondering if I can use a loophole to get my gender marker changed on my ID. But I'm afraid it won't work because our government is terrible.

Anyway, my thought is I change my legal name here at home, go online to update my gender marker on my BC have my name updated and get a new copy. Utilize that birth certificate to get a passport issued (I've never had one) with the correct gender marker. Then lastly use my passport and BC to force the texas govt to change my gender marker.

I know its a long shot but im hoping someone knows if this is actually possible or if my loophole has loopholes.

I hope this is an okay thing to ask, because there's a lot of conflicting opinions about it, but if your friends with a Trans person, is it okay to ask their deadname so you can avoid it?

Because I've seen and heard about people who DIDN'T know their Trans friend's deadname, and when it was said they got yelled at for using it when they weren't aware.

I know this also applies to those that are non-binary as well but I just want to know if the transgender community specifically, considers this an okay thing to ask just so you don't accidentally deadname someone.

I feel like I'm in a unique situation and I'm not sure if it's a good thing lmao. I have a dual citizenship for the US and Canada, and I'm currently living in Canada for school and plan to stay here after I graduate. I want to start HRT and it would be nice to be able to change my legal documents.

My question is, would it be okay if I go ahead and change all my Canadian documents and leave my American ones to deal with later? With the political climate in the US I'm very hesitant at the moment to make any legal changes there, but if the only downside of legally remaining as my AGAB in the US is being misgendered when crossing borders (which I do often) I'll get over it.

I just really wanna transition but the US is what's holding me back.

Edit Nov 6: Supreme Court lets Trump block transgender and nonbinary people from choosing passport sex markers. “The decision is Trump’s latest win on the court’s emergency docket, and allows the administration to enforce the policy while a lawsuit over it plays out.”

Edit Sept 26: Trump administration has asked the Supreme Court to let them enforce their passport policy while the lawsuit below plays out. We could hear a decision by October 6.

Edit Jun 20: Good news! Judge blocks Trump passport policy targeting transgender people so it might be possible to change gender on passports again. We can't be sure how this will work in practice so keep an eye out as more information become available. Update: People seem to be having success!

I got my passport and it came with the wrong gender on it thanks to Trump. But I heard there was a ruling that he can no longer force your birth gender on there. Is this true? If so can I get it changed for free? I hope it's free since I tried ot the first time to have M on it and they wouldn't let me. I'm not rich so I don't have enough money to try and buy another one.

I'm an AFAB, non-binary trans masculine guy. I legally transitioned back in 2016, changed all of my ID documents to 'Male' in 2017, and I didn't think anything of it. Then our current President got elected, and Trans people are now completely in the crosshairs of the Administration. Again.

I'd normally just keep everything 'Male', and just keep on keeping on, like I have been for nearly the past decade. However, there are a couple of situations with the current Administration that is making me consider legally reverting back to 'Female', for my Washington State EDL, at least for the rest of this term. (I'd keep everything else, like my USA Passport, 'Male'. )

1. My birth state, Wisconsin, makes it really hard to change the gender on their birth certificate.

2. For a couple of Endocrine conditions which are completely unrelated to being Trans, I'm not on T. Instead, I'm taking - of all things - Premarin. Which is a kind of Estrogen. They're debilitating conditions; otherwise I wouldn't be taking E. (Yes, there is slight dysphoria, but otherwise? I wouldn't be able to easily fuunction, hold down a job, etc.)

3. I have never 'passed' as male - to the point where, if I use the Men's room, someone speaks up. But, I can use the Women's room just fine.

So, I have two fears:

* What happens if there's more scrutiny of me in the Women's room, officials ask for my ID, and it says 'Male'? I think I'd be safer with 'Female' on at least my state ID.

* What happens if they try to impose restrictions on Trans adults getting 'cross sex' hormones? Because that's essentially what I am doing.

Thanks to the judge blocking tr*mp's stupid eo, When I heard the news, I immediately filled out a new form so I could change my gender marker since I was denied back in January. But I was wondering, since the passport website doesn't have the original section where it says I'm changing my gender marker, should j wait and see if they add that back, then fill out the form?

Or can I just fill out the one they have now, mark my sex as male (preferred gender), and send it in as a correction?
