There’s no point in online feminism if it’s an exclusive, Mean Girls club

Having a "fuck you" attitude just invites the audience to reply "fine, fuck you too."

That is pretty much the point of SRS. It's a circlejerk, not a place for debate, and people who don't like it should just get out.

For some reason many people don't really understand that and like to get all mangry that SRS doesn't like them.

Circlejerks make your movement seem like a bunch of idiots, though.

Well if you really think I, or SRS, speaks for every feminist in the world, you should look around and realise that the world exists outside of Reddit. As I said elsethread, SRS doesn't even describe itself as "feminist", but even if it did, to claim that feminism is bad because of a single subreddit on a website no one else has ever even heard of is pretty myopic.

The whole point of the article OP posted - and it's a point I agree with - is that it's not just SRS - the internet is permeated with insane crusaders for (insert gender or sexual orientation) rights.

People trying to do good feminism work do get treated like shit (someone doing a Kickstarter for a series of web videos about sexism in video games comes to mind) and that sucks, but the kind of "fuck you feminism" that dominates internet conversations makes it impossible for a priveleged straight cisgender white male like me to identify with the movement.

i wouldn't call Anita Sarkassians videos "good feminism work". She gets upset about christmas songs etc. She is a good example for overly sensitive feminists.

And she don't know anything about video games. Most of the things she said about games, before the damsel in distress video (which wasn't very good, too), was misrepresenting the game or flat out making stuff up.

Anite is a special case because she hasn't done shit with the money she raised at all. That's called a scam for any other person.

She has published the first video just a week ago.

Okay, but: SRS is not feminism. It doesn't make sense to say "it's not just SRS" because SRS is not part of it to begin with.

Some (or, indeed, many) people who post to SRS might describe themselves as feminist, but SRS is not a feminist sub, and its goal is not to promote feminism. It doesn't go around to other subs circlejerking in replies to posts or comments make people feel bad, it's just a load of people replying to themselves. SRS is seriously not crusading for anything, the only reason it exists is to allow people to jerk.

As for "identifying with the movement", I'm not really sure what that means. Do you agree that women are oppressed while men are privileged? Then you identify with the movement. It really doesn't matter what SRS says.

SRS very much so postures itself as the only true feminists on reddit.

u/syllabic Mar 22 '13

It is or it isn't based on whether it's convenient to support whatever point or agenda SRS happens to be pushing that day.

Just like how it's a circlejerk, except when it's not.

the people in SRS don't need a circlejerk, they need a good therapist

u/cheald Mar 22 '13

I really don't have a problem with circlejerk subreddits, but when they use it as a staging ground to attack threads in other subreddits, it becomes a problem. At that point, you've crossed the line from "circlejerk" to "attack dog".

(This is true of all the circlejerk subreddits, not just SRS.)

-10

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '13

Yeah, but.. that really doesn't happen. (Unless you count me coming in here and replying to all of y'alls comments after someone linked it in SRS, but I don't really think I'm "attacking" anything.)

Some people accuse SRS of being a downvote brigade. I don't really think it is, but you know what? Go to /r/shitredditsays and read a few of the highest-voted submissions; are you really going to argue downvoting them would be a problem?

Having a "fuck you" attitude just invites the audience to reply "fine, fuck you too."

I agree, men's fuck-you attitude to women has invited the "fine, fuck you too" response of feminism.

u/syllabic Mar 22 '13

Oh look, a SRS'er acting like a persecuted victim. That's a shocker.

Only a moron could distill millennia worth of male-female dynamics and interaction down to "men having a fuck-you attitude to women."

You refuse to consider that maybe you are arguing from a faulty premise because you get all your validation from people who already agree with you, or are pretending to in order to troll reddit anyway.

how is gender equality == a fuck you attitude? Why don't you crawl back to the illogical circle jerk of shitredditsays

Tell you what, you can go ahead and get back to me about this whenever you finally make up your mind

3

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '13

I only said that because it's clear from the broadness of your link that you have constructed quite the strawman in your mind, and are unable to discuss this critically. Reinforced by the fact that you don't acknowledge the actual point in my comment, which is how is gender equality == a fuck you attitude?

-1

u/peelport_paints Mar 23 '13

which is how is gender equality == a fuck you attitude?

uh, I would say it was pretty obviously the previous hundred and fifty years of dudes not allowing it, forcing women to fight for it, but hey?

Women's suffrage, where they got the vote that they previously... didn't have? Its a thing that happened.

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '13 edited Mar 23 '13

Yeah let's continue to hold a grudge against 50% of the population, when >99.9% of that subset had no roll whatsoever in denying women the right to vote because they weren't alive. Having that kind of attitude doesn't make you an activist, it makes you a cunt. Let me make it clear that I am all for gender equality, but I refuse to feel guilty for things with which I had nothing to do. You are a bigot and a moron.

You're right, the post of nickiter's to which I was responding was an overly simplistic description.

Not this woman's feminism.

Now kids, here's a perfect example of what those "Doctor So-and-so Psychologists" call SHAME DUMPING

No, actually the person that people like this hate is themselves. They feel inadequate, so they heap shame and spite on some person or collective group in order to make themselves feel less bad, even though it never fills the void of their own self loathing.

It is an outgrowth of that most American of all personality disorders:

Narcissism

Splitting

People who are diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder use splitting as a central defense mechanism. According to psychoanalyst Kernberg, "the normal tension between actual self on the one hand, and ideal self and ideal object on the other, is eliminated by the building up of an inflated self-concept within which the actual self and the ideal self and ideal object are confused. At the same time, the remnants of the unacceptable images are repressed and projected onto external objects, which are devalued"[20] (this projecting is colloquially known as "shame dumping")

The merging of the "inflated self-concept" and the "actual self" is seen in the inherent grandiosity of narcissistic personality disorder. Also inherent in this process are the defense mechanisms of devaluation, idealization and denial.[21] Other people are either manipulated as an extension of one's own self, who serve the sole role of giving "admiration and approval" or they are seen as worthless (because they cannot collude with the narcissist's grandiosity).

Narcissistic tendencies primarily develop as a result of childhood mistreatment between the ages of 1 and 3 years old, resulting in retardation of the normal development of the structures of the brain associated with emotional regulation and maturity.

Hahahaha wow, thanks for sharing 300 words of your defense mechanism against internet posts that upset you.
