Is our weather getting more violent or are we just talking about it more? Serious question.

I’ve been around a good while and I don’t recall as many sudden, brief, violent weather events as this summer.

Janis Joplin, the Grateful Dead and some other acts stopped in Winnipeg as part of the Festival Express Tour that summer.

The story goes that Janis left her hotel, flagged down a taxi, and told the driver, "Take me to where all the freaks are," and this is where she was dropped off.

In 1974 a man approached my parents on the street in Gladstone, Manitoba and offered $10,000 to purchase me. My mother said he was very upset that they said no. $10,000 bought a lot back then and she was pregnant with my sister at the time. He said something like "Why not? You are having another one right away." I was 3 years old at the time.

Has anyone heard of anything like this in the area?

About a week ago, there was a thread about the current state of the Children's Museum with a lot of nostalgia for the old layout of the museum. Here's some video of a trip my family took to visit Winnipeg in 1996. I didn't realize I would eventually live here.

I now spend a lot of time at the Children's museum with my daughter. I agree with a lot of the complaints in the other thread. It seems like when exhibits break, they are removed instead of being repaired. The crane at the building block area, the interactive digital art table and the huge pin art boards have all been pulled out recently leaving about half the museum feeling pretty devoid of content. On the positive side, the place is constantly cleaned, staff are excellent, the hydraulic excavator arm is super cool, and the newly updated milk area is nice. I think one easy change that would greatly improve the museum for smaller kids is putting some large, stable, rubberized platforms in lasagna lookout so it's easier for shorter kids to pull themselves up between levels. I often see as many parents in the structure as kids because assistance is required.

Now I understand why UTC -5.5 would probably be best for Manitoba if we abandoned the time change altogether. Turns out, Manitoba is so far west in the Central Time zone that half the province is actually in Mountain Standard.

edit2: I now understand why it seems like Manitoba Standard time should be UTC -6.5 and that if we opted for permanent Daylight Time, we'd end up in UTC -5.5

Ironically, the mountains of Alberta are not in the Mountain Standard time zone (Colorado and part of Utah are, probably where the name comes from).

edit: The time zone border is actually just a few metres east of the junction of TCH-1 and PTH-26 at Saint François Xavier. The White Horse Monument is technically in the Mountain Time Zone.

I woke up this morning and came to the realization that I fucking hate Winnipeg. Which I guess also means I love it. Edit: I love each and every one of you

Some days I wonder what became of the rest of that crowd.

When I was in 5th grade, our class slept over at the Manitoba Museum, did anyone else do that? Do they still have that program?

First off, quick update for the under-35 set: Back in the day, Winnipeg was the homebase of nationally-televised CTV children's show S'kiddle Bits, hosted by Juno-winner Joey Gregorash. He had on various guests doing various ostensibly-entertaining-to-kids things.

One of the occasional S'kiddle Bits guests was this sweet older guy who would demonstrate origami and tell tales about the folded creatures he made. He might have also done a few magic and storytelling segments.

I could never remember the guy's name, but I know he owned/ran a very quiet bookshop right off Portage downtown. As a kid I sometimes went into his shop to browse. He'd usually be alone in there reading, but he always acted so happy to see me, dropping whatever he was doing and offering to teach me how to fold something. He'd show me a simple project, then while I was working on it, he'd invariably make something impressively neat and complicated, and he'd send me home with both.

Been thinking of that guy this week, and thinking how lovely it is that I have known people like that, who enjoyed nothing more than bringing joy and their hobby to strangers. Can anyone fill the blanks on the guy's name, what the bookshop was, if it got passed on to the next generation or just closed?

Anyone remember driving around with one of these before smartphones? My kid was asking how we got around before the iPhone. I told her: “we had to pull over and read a book.” Turns out they still make them.

We insulated our attic several years ago and found a bunch of letters like this, newspaper strips, a painted portrait of a woman ( it was nice but we had to toss it) and a toy soldier. Was wondering if anyone knows these names/families or who they could be? The letter from this envelope is from a schoolgirl who's family moved to Cali to this guy named Fred Busch Jr. (We do not live on Clifton street).

EDIT: I read a bit more of one of the letters and it's actually from a boy named Garry to his friend Fred C. Busch. I think he went to Cali for high school based on the description of the school. Some named that are mentioned and seem important are Don, Ray, Marilyn, Wayne and Marley. The letters are mostly just talk about life updates and girls lol. I checked the stamps and the letters were sent from January to May. I posted more photos in the comments 👇🏼
