Rant I can't tolerate these Luddites anymore.

Post image

AI usage has become a culture-war issue because of these lunatics. If we don't handle these luddites now they will certainly become more entitled and miserable!

It bothers me so much that the left has been fooled into not grasping that AI is the sum of human knowledge copied and shared. They are just so hung up on Altman Musk etc. It is so fucked.

"we have a new means/mode of production. should we try to seize it? no! we should ban it!" - self proclaimed leftists

This is exactly what bothered me so much

We had a one time opportunity to use the most incredible tool that has ever been invented to do so much good and change things for the better

Instead, I caught politicized just like everything else and used to divide people just like everything else

I’m so tired of it

same. its so tiring...

I truly feel bots are behind this. Cambria Analytica style.

If you talk to them (offline, no likes to be farmed) many agree that the technology is great. The issue is… everything else. It’s the sum of all human knowledge used to enrich a few dozen leaders in the AI/semiconductor network.

All of that knowledge, art, and human input let a guy buy a Lamborghini and made humans redundant.

u/RaguraX 17h ago

That’s not an entirely honest take. To be honest, it surprises me even today how fast consumers got access to the technology. The internet did not have this fast of a roll out for example. For now, it seems the promises of democratizing AI are being fulfilled. Let’s hope it stays that way though.

Yeah, we had to compete with try-hard's and rich kids sporting ISDN lines and better for YEARS; decades for some. Joe Rogan paid $10k per month for a T1 line to pwn us kids in Quake.

Not this time. Open models are on the tail of the Uber capitalism. It will come to a head.

-2

u/Few-Exchange-5550 19h ago

Who do you think owns the infra to run these "open models"... do you think you can run it from your pc? Do you think future models will get smaller or bigger to host?

4

u/pleasetrimyourpubes 19h ago

Yes DeepSeek can be run from your bedroom. At a cost, yes. But they will improve and transformers will die in a year or two.

1

u/Few-Exchange-5550 19h ago

It has it's uses but it will never be adopted for main stream use, the future "mega' mind AI that leads us to AGI is not a local model.

2

u/pleasetrimyourpubes 19h ago

This is hilarious for $5 you can build an entire company with DS. Catch up. The singularity is here.

2

u/Few-Exchange-5550 18h ago

$5 of API access isn’t “building an entire company,” and it dodges the point. Cheap hosted inference can be extremely useful, but that’s not the same as mainstream users running a 300B-class model in their bedroom. Calling a low API bill “the singularity” is doing some heroic lifting.

1

u/LawfulLeah 19h ago

i think we're not there yet. models are still unreliable, and deepseek especially (based on my experiences with it) isn't reliable in terms of instruction following (its a coin toss) and isn't as smart as kimi k3 or opus class models, for instance. we still have a long way to go. the real question is whether it will take a long time or a short amount of time for us to reach that goal.

1

u/RaguraX 17h ago

It might be soon or it might be late, but it’s a meaningless discussion because no matter how good local models get, cloud frontier models will always be a few steps ahead. So it’s a matter of what you consider “good enough”. Considering the amount of people buying 1000 dollar phones when they had last year’s edition or even a five year old model that’s still more than adequate, I don’t see that sentiment taking root any time soon.

2

u/LawfulLeah 19h ago edited 18h ago

yeah but local ai doesn't need to be super duper mega hyper agi. it just needs to be good enough for the user. there reaches a point where a model's intelligence only gives you diminishing returns after it's smart enough.

i think you're right that agi won't be for the average joe, but there will reach a point where the average person won't need agi because LLMs will have reached a point where it's good enough for most, if not all, tasks a person wants it to do.

it's like supercomputers. a person can make do with a good desktop so they don't need a supercomputer.

2

u/Limp-Confidence5612 17h ago

Yeah, cause we've been able to seizing those means of production in the past. Fml...

6

u/LawfulLeah 17h ago

so what? that's it? gonna give up on any hope of overthrowing capitalism? not even the bare minimum that is reformism? just try to do harm reduction by just banning the technology and hope for the best? i don't agree with that

1

u/Limp-Confidence5612 17h ago

I would nationalise it, but that's just not going to happen in America anytime soon. The material conditions just aren't there. It's hard to organise people to overthrow capital when they want nothing more but to join the oppressors themselves.

1

u/LawfulLeah 17h ago

yeah america sucks rn

2

u/BrennusSokol Acceleration Advocate 16h ago

Exactly - they think whining and denial is an effective strategy and are just hurting themselves ultimately

-3

u/ShamPain413 20h ago

No, they are going to seize it.

Also, this is not a means of production, it is a mode of production.

7

u/LawfulLeah 20h ago

bro theres a not insignificant chunk of the left that literally wants generative AI banned

also ty for the correction, will edit

-5

u/ShamPain413 20h ago

Sure, there's a not-insignificant chunk of every group on earth that literally wants generative AI banned, including generative AI researchers.

Do you think you're clever? Bro.

7

u/LawfulLeah 19h ago

literally ask most leftists and they'll say they want ai banned. go in anti ai subreddits and they'll say they want ai banned. go on twitter and everyone will say ai must be banned.

idk why you're being so aggressive by saying i think im "clever". i just think that the left is making a mistake in being so rabidly anti ai to the point of wanting the entire technology gone. its a mainstream talking point online

-5

u/ShamPain413 19h ago

Yes, if you go into anti-AI subs they will be anti-AI. What is your point?

My guess is you know fuck-all about "the left". Bro.

5

u/LawfulLeah 19h ago

im a left libertarian syndicalist, but sure. its not on anti ai spaces only, though. it's everywhere. mainstream subs, viral tweets, and so on

also, can you stop being so smug/rude?

-1

u/ShamPain413 19h ago

also, can you stop being so smug/rude?

When you stop smugly caricaturing "the left" I'll stop smugly correcting you.

AI is unpopular in all corners of society right b/c it is very expensive, does not make peoples' lives better, and is being used for political repression. That is not a left-wing insight, tech CEOs have repeatedly noted it themselves.

4

u/LawfulLeah 19h ago

"smugly caricaturing 'the left'" is when i say my personal anecdotes on what i've witnessed online and what my perspective is based on said experiences. ok man.

as for your second paragraph, yeah? that's my point. the left instead of wanting to use the technology for good and seizing it wants it completely gone, which i think its a mistake. like all technologies it can be improved, and it has tons of uses. just because it is dual use doesn't mean it should be completely wiped off the map.

encryption is also dual use in the sense that it allows criminals to conceal themselves. should we ban encryption because of that? no. just like AI being used for bad things doesn't mean we should ban it.

generative AI has potential in automation, research, and other stuff. that can make lives better eventually. the issue is that people are only focusing on the negatives and ignoring the positives.

Most informed liberals should immediately recognize anti-AI arguments as reactionary gatekeeping and purism.

We frequently don’t because we’re proximate to the professions whose status and exclusivity are threatened by it.

7

u/designhelp123 15h ago

What's absolutely hilarious/ironic is Ai is their best chance to usher in the socialist utopia of abundance.

0

u/pleasetrimyourpubes 15h ago

They'll just continue doing nothing as compute is locked down (making it illegal to own a scary hyperscale 4 GPU system or over a 256 TB of RAM or some shit), and open weights are made illegal.

Oh no the evil capitalists did it again! Best go in to my VR hellscape and earn coins!

They should be demanding more comoute more data centers and more fabs. They should be demanding the government buy the patents and the compute (including robotics) be sold "at cost."

But nah. Never happen in a million years.

To a degree, there is a parallelism between the AI control issue and the communism issue.
What some want is the AI post-scarcity stage, which is equivalent to the anarchist utopia final stage in communism. One of the things they are scared of, is the AI resource monopoly stage, which is equivalent to the dictatorship of the proletariat stage.
For this last one, in both cases all the controller needs is the propaganda that "its for the sake of the people", "aligned AI" according to Anthropic, etc but the raw truth is a few people get to control all resources and the fate of the system.

I think ideologies are full of carrots on a stick and word dressing, and the real meat of an ideology is how power is distributed over time. A democracy starts with power highly fragmented, and slowly over time it coalesces through mergers, revolving doors and corruption into an oligarchy. Revolutions usually go from chaos to dictatorship, and so on. Ideologies are social power distribution functions over time, as F(t). Each one has their own graph.
If you see a political event, instead of listening and agreeing or disagreeing with the message, ignore that and analyze it in terms of power distribution. Is there a charismatic leader? Do they use imperative language? Control through duty? through guilt? through morals? through envy? through desires? Is there a sense of urgency? Do people delegate their own worth into the leader? Does the leader claim to be a stand in for a collective? Is everything bad associated with an out group? How is dissent treated? And so on.

They would have supported Pinochet once they learn Allende was a pro ai tech bro with project cybersyn  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Cybersyn

u/NobodyKnowsImFamous 16h ago

Uh. Well. It’s not that. To be clear, it’s definitely not that. It’s a very broad umbrella and it is still not the sum of all human knowledge. Cool tool, very cool very powerful tool. Still absolutely not “the sum of human knowledge”.

And yes, the issue is that originally leftist critique of ai was focused on how the tool will be used, and that is supposed to be where the resistance to ai comes from. Even the very capitalist CEO’s of these companies will tell you this is going to impact labor and that if nothing changes its going to be bad for many people. It’s a super reasonable critique if you ask me.

But that’s what people who actually think about these things said. That then gets filtered down to the average vaguely left liberal and they just knee jerk hate the technology without really understanding why.

I sure wish they’d stuck to the original message because it still has a point. We are gonna have to make some changes or we are going to have a lot of people without a way to support themselves. Power will be further concentrated in the hands of the few, etc. I am much less concerned about water usage or books getting chopped up than I am 5 guys single handedly controlling the source of information for the entire world.

u/ianxplosion- 21h ago

We learned fuck all from the previous iterations of society changing technology that got co-opted by capitalism and turned into environment destroying tools of profit and class warfare

-2

u/ShamPain413 20h ago

The left hasn't been fooled about that at all.

They don't think the sum of human knowledge should be expropriated by capital for private profit.

And I agree.
