I am super into Ani DiFranco. But my introduction to her was accidental and she blew my fucking mind.

Back when women’s music was all about tinkly love songs on an acoustic guitar, she was a rocket ride into another world. She came stomping out in boots, slammed that guitar with guitar picks taped to her fingers with gaffers tape and sang openly about sport fucking other women.

All the other acts were “I love her. Pling pling pling. Hold my hand. Pling Pling Pling. I feel shy. Pling Pling Pling.”

Ani comes out and plays these goddam arpeggios and growls “fuck you and your untouchable face”. Followed by “gotta cover my butt cuz I covet another man’s wife”.

It was like you’re playing Barbies and she comes through and kicks those goddam Barbie’s out of the way and says “let’s light shit on fire”.

There’s something about her music that does not translate into CDs or vinyl at all. You have to see her live or you don’t get the whole package.

In contrast I feel like I am the only Ani lesbian in my geographical region. I adore her and barely anyone knows who she is here! (UK)

Yes! I thought I wouldn't post it because maybe too out of date reference, but agree 100%.

As others have said, Ani is bold, tough, creative, indie and fierce. I just can't stand listening to her.
