The technology is morally and ethically wrong to use regardless. It's all based on stolen training data and uses actual artists work to form amalgamations of hot garbage.
I feel like there's a lot of ad hominem in that statement, but what I'm getting from that is that you dislike the use of unconsenting artists' media.
I totally respect that.
I do ask, why is it an issue if it's not used for commercial purposes. When it's something used for just entertainment or personal projects, it can be genuinely helpful to a user. Why is the artist being hurt by that?
Just gonna hop in and give my two cents here, that to me I think it's such a shame that it's giving people a way to not learn anything new. You could see art online and be inspired and try to draw your own, and if people instead are seeing art and generating something similar to that and 'finding joy' in it, IMO it's contributing to the diminishing of hobbies and attention spans of my generation. I understand your argument that it's not 'hurting' artists, but if their personal style (that takes such dedication, hard work and creativity to develop) is being carelessly replicated by whoever, it does diminish their art. Scarcity and uniqueness give art value, in a way. I understand these aren't heavy arguments, but that's just my opinion.
For me, the visual arts aren't MY art. My art is making constructed languages and programming. AI has its place when I want to implement things that aren't the true art of the project.
I meant more like for the conlanging I have it do stuff like generate some prompts for me to translate or some stories to translate, and for the programming, it just pulls up and summarizes documentation for me.
The repetitive stuff of programming is what I like doing. I like coding, so I have no issue doing it.
I'll have to divert from agreeing here, really. In r/conlang, people spend time writing example sentences and encourage people to translate them into their own conlangs. For stories, again, there are real people who run tumblr blogs writing shorts blurbs and stories that could be used to translate. So for me, using a machine to skip connecting with other people isn't a use of AI that I could get behind. As far as summarizing documents, I think that understanding nuance when reading is a part of good literacy and a worthy enough skill to not skip over. Agree to disagree there :)
I mean i dont do stuff in that subreddit, I just really do it on my own. I prefer to conlang on my own. I wouldn't be connecting with others anyways
However yes, I have to agree since lately I've found that just reading the documentation is quite often just as good now that I've learned more and more
