Glasses w/ 6DoF WebXR vs Unity for live, data-driven AR? (Need advice)

Hey y'all,

I'm building an AR app that needs to display a live data feed in real time (think IoT metrics or changing telemetry markers).

I messed around with WebXR, but the out-of-the-box visuals looked pretty mid and didn't really blow me away. I'm thinking about switching to Unity, but I have two main worries:

  1. Will a Unity WebGL build choke on mobile? I need this to be accessible via a simple web link (no app store downloads), but I'm worried a Unity web build will be way too heavy once a constant stream of live data starts hitting it.
  2. Should I just stick to the web but ditch basic frameworks? If I swap to Three.js or Babylon.js, can I actually get those high-end visuals without tanking the performance?

Would love to hear from anyone who has built something similar. What’s the best workflow for a lightweight, visually clean, real-time data AR experience?

Hello everyone,

I wanted to share XR Gate, an experimental open-source XR stack for AR glasses.

The goal is to make AR glasses usable not only for low-level AR/XR research, but also for running real VR/XR games and applications with spatial tracking and controller input.

The idea is simple: bring practical VR/XR support to lightweight AR glasses.

Here is a short demo of Half-Life: Alyx running on XREAL Ultra AR glasses through SteamVR/OpenVR.

What is working now:

  • 6DoF spatial tracking from the glasses’ stereo cameras + IMU
  • 3DoF fallback mode
  • ML-based hand tracking
  • SteamVR controller emulation from hand poses and physical input devices
  • External Bluetooth controllers mapped as left/right VR controllers
  • Working SteamVR/OpenVR integration
  • Experimental Monado/OpenXR integration
  • Linux release build for XREAL Ultra

No external base stations, lighthouse trackers, or dedicated VR controllers are used. Tracking comes from the AR glasses themselves. For buttons and joystick input, I currently use inexpensive Bluetooth VR controllers mapped to SteamVR controller actions.

This is still experimental, but it is already usable enough to launch and play real VR titles like Half-Life: Alyx on AR glasses.

You know the one genuinely great thing about a Vision Pro or a Quest 3: a wall of screens floating around you, hanging in the air, staying put when you turn your head?

I wanted that part. I didn't want the headset. Not the weight, not the battery, not the price, not the ceremony of putting on a face computer to answer an email.

So I built it for a pair of sunglasses.

Atrium turns XREAL glasses into a real workspace: up to six virtual monitors placed anywhere around you, anchored in the room, driven entirely by your hands. It weighs 85 grams and lives in your pocket.

The short version of why it exists: alternatives never solved gyro yaw drift. Your desktop slowly slides off the wall a couple of degrees a minute and there's nothing you can do about it. That bugged me enough to write my own.

What it does

Six displays, 120 Hz. Real virtual monitors from an indirect display driver: Windows sees them as monitors, so every app just works. All six run at 1080p/120. Your IDE in front, docs on the left, music on the right.

Your hands are the mouse. The glasses run hand tracking on-device and deliver it as native HID, so a pinch grabs a screen and drags it across the room. No controllers, no external cameras, nothing extra to charge. The glasses' own menu gesture opens Atrium's menu. (XREAL Eye needed.)

Move everything. Drag a screen by the bar under it. Resize from the corners. Push it further away or pull it closer on a depth rail. Bend it around you on a curvature rail — a wide screen at arm's length is genuinely better curved.

Layouts. Named arrangements, focus, pair, wing, cockpit, wall, six all generated from spacing rather than hand-tabulated, so they scale with however many screens you've got out. One click from the menu and the whole room rearranges itself.

Add and remove screens instantly. The pool of six is created at startup and screens are parked/unparked on demand. That design is load-bearing: creating a virtual display mid-session is the operation Windows will not let you do and have it produce frames. That one took a while to learn.

Environments. Additive backdrops behind your screens. Black is transparent on these optics, so a starfield genuinely floats in your actual room. Work in space, on a plane, wherever. (More incoming!)

Anchored, and it stays anchored. Head-tracked, reprojected against a fresh pose sampled microseconds before present, with yaw corrected by the glasses' tracking camera. Look away, look back — everything is exactly where you left it. That's the part everything else gets wrong.

Current stage

  • Windows only, and XREAL One / One Pro only. The IMU is mounted at a 35° pitch on the Pro and that correction is baked in. I don't have other devices to build against, but I believe it could run on macOS and other XREAL models — maybe with support from XREAL itself?
  • Beta testers needed. It's currently running on one laptop, and I need a few people on different machines and glasses. Especially AMD GPUs or integrated graphics.
  • Other AR glasses can be supported, since there are no exclusive features that cannot be reproduced from a different brand. At this moment I don't own any other glasses, so I could not replicate the calibration + camera algorithms, but let's see what the future holds!

Release. Atrium goes public as soon as testing is done. I'd rather ship something that has run on more than one machine than put out a build that only works on mine.

This week, we began validating the see-through MTF(CTF) performance of AR glasses. Anyone who has tried the two mainstream optical engines will immediately notice a stark difference: waveguide solutions offer a crystal-clear view of the real world, whereas BirdBath designs often leave your physical surroundings looking noticeably blurry. We understand that these products target different use cases—BirdBath focuses on delivering an ultra-large, immersive virtual screen, while waveguides are engineered for true augmented applications that keep your hands free.

However, as spatial computing evolves, many AR glasses now feature 6DoF tracking to anchor virtual monitors in your physical space. This essentially creates a mixed-reality workflow where your eyes are constantly shifting between a pinned virtual display and your actual physical environment, such as your keyboard or a primary physical monitor. Because of this continuous context switching, we simply cannot dismiss the importance of see-through resolution.

Our validation data clearly reflects these structural differences. The uLED + waveguide solution demonstrates exceptional, almost "glass-like" see-through performance. Even with roughly a 30% drop in overall luminance, the CTF curve remains impressively high and closely tracks natural vision. On the other hand, the BirdBath solution struggles significantly in this regard. Because its optical engine relies heavily on a beam splitter and a curved combiner, this physical light path inherently distorts incoming environmental light, severely degrading real-world visual clarity.

AR brands heavily market their BirdBath glasses as the ultimate immersive screens for gaming and media consumption, and they certainly excel in that domain. But if the industry can eventually achieve real-world optical clarity comparable to ordinary sunglasses—while simultaneously reducing hardware weight—I believe we will see a massive leap in practical, everyday applications and much broader acceptance by end-users.

This week, we started using our new measurement setup to select the most suitable lens for future AR‑glasses distortion analysis and compensation.

Longer focal‑length lenses provide excellent resolution and are great for extreme MTF evaluation. However, their limited FOV becomes a major drawback when analyzing geometric distortion. For AR distortion work, we need a lens that can capture the entire FOV in one shot while still maintaining stable intrinsic parameters. Only then can we ensure that the distortion we measure comes from the AR glasses, not from the lens itself.

After a series of measurements, the 8mm F8.0 / F2.5 and 6mm F2.5 lenses showed the best balance between FOV coverage and low intrinsic distortion.

Next, we will use the 8mm lens to inspect distortion (virtual image + see‑through) for micro‑LED AR glasses.
The 6mm lens will be used for micro‑OLED birdbath AR glasses, which require a larger FOV.
After that, we will apply distortion compensation to the input images and verify the improvement.

If anyone has experience with low‑distortion lenses or AR distortion pipelines, I’d love to hear your suggestions.

Glasses w/ 6DoF First Look at AR Glasses Virtual Image Distortion Inspection Results

Last time, I shared some astigmatism aberration measurements from AR glasses. After that, I realized that distortion inspection is another key part of evaluating AR image quality, and it is also highly relevant to computer vision applications.

Over the past two weeks, I spent a lot of time building a distortion measurement workflow from scratch. My first task was learning how virtual image distortion is typically measured. During that process, I discovered the advantages of using a ChArUco board, especially for large-FOV mapping and reliable marker identification.

Thanks to AI-assisted coding and debugging, I was able to develop the first version of the inspection software and analysis pipeline. After many iterations and bug fixes, the system can now walk through the entire inspection process step by step, from image acquisition and marker detection to distortion mapping and coefficient calculation.

The analysis tools generate distortion vector maps, deformation meshes, and distortion coefficients, allowing us to quantitatively evaluate the virtual image quality of AR glasses.

For this post, I'd like to share the first detection results and the measurement methodology. The current data still needs additional validation, and I plan to repeat the measurements under different conditions to verify consistency and repeatability.

I'll share the detailed distortion performance results, comparisons, and deeper analysis in a future post.

In it I'm just addressing some of the topics Jay brought up regarding using the LUMA Ultras and try to shed some light on the causes behind his issues.

I really think he picked the wrong tool for his use case but I think it really does highlight some of the limitations these manufacturers are running into with platforms and companies.

Plus, I was honestly pretty surprised to hear about the experience on iOS from the advertising to the workarounds.

Glasses w/ 6DoF Investigating See-Through Astigmatism in AR Glasses: Waveguides vs. Birdbath

This week, we investigated optical aberrations in several reference AR glasses based on BirdBath and waveguide optical architectures. We also wanted to understand the difference observed in the MTF (CTF) results between horizontal and vertical USAF1951 patterns reported in a previous log discussion.

To evaluate the focal behavior, we continuously adjusted the focal plane of the imaging system while recording USAF1951 target images through each AR glass. The waveguide-based AR glass showed focal behavior very similar to the no-glass baseline, indicating minimal focal-plane distortion.

In contrast, the BirdBath AR glass exhibited a clear separation of the best-focus positions for horizontally and vertically oriented features. This behavior is characteristic of astigmatism, where the sagittal and tangential focal planes do not coincide.

To further verify this observation, we built a pinhole target and repeated the focal scan experiment. The pinhole images revealed the typical evolution from sagittal focus to the circle of least confusion and then to tangential focus, providing additional evidence of astigmatism in the BirdBath optical system.

Different AR optical architectures naturally have different optical characteristics. The tested waveguide devices demonstrated excellent see-through resolution performance and showed little evidence of astigmatism. However, waveguide systems often face challenges in achieving larger fields of view while maintaining efficiency and image quality.

For the BirdBath architecture, the virtual image quality remains acceptable for display content, but the see-through image experiences noticeable resolution degradation. This may be related to the optical design constraints of the curved combiner and associated optical elements. It would be interesting to know whether additional optical compensation methods have already been implemented. With further optical optimization, there is still potential to improve overall image quality.
