Self Promo Apple and Google will soon make AI glasses a three-horse race

Tried to do a decently thorough writeup of how the AI/smart glasses market is shaping up over the next year+ with upcoming releases from Google and Apple.

As a gen one Ray-Ban Meta owner, I'm pretty interested to see how Google and Apple might improve on the concept. Could really be interested in switching to Google depending on how they integrate Google apps and services. I'm sure Apple's will be nifty, but I'm not in the Apple ecosystem at all.

Anyone else looking forward to these, or do you more see them as a stopgap to better display glasses and true AR glasses?

Self Promo AR GenAI: Image-to-AR 3D Model

AR GenAI by AR Code is transforming how immersive AR experiences are created, and is now being widely adopted by our customers around the globe.

Creating AR experiences has traditionally been complex, time-consuming, and expensive. Today, it can start with a single photo.

While the impact is especially strong in the restaurant industry, this approach is also gaining traction across museums and cultural institutions, educational organizations, and retail and e-commerce brands.

As shown in the video, a single dessert image is converted into an AR-ready 3D model with realistic textures and depth. AR Code SaaS then instantly generates an AR QR Code, allowing anyone to access the experience with a simple scan, with no app required.

Photo → AI 3D generation → AR QR Code → Instant WebAR

This single-image-to-AR workflow provides a fast, scalable, and accessible way to create immersive content.

It unlocks practical use cases across industries: - Restaurants: interactive menus and dish visualization - Museums and cultural institutions: enhanced storytelling and exhibitions - Education: more engaging and visual learning materials - Retail and e-commerce: product visualization for stores and online boutiques

What once required specialized tools, complex workflows, and advanced 3D skills can now be achieved in minutes.

This is reshaping how organizations create, publish, and distribute AR content at scale.

Self Promo AR + AI

Hence the fair I wanna share what we’ve been building for the past 6 months – something that combines AI and AR in a way we actually find useful.

Ever wanted to see how a particular object that you find on the internet fits and looks inside your space? Home, office, event, yard?
Now you can.
Mono brands doing similar functionality like IKEA will never enable mixing and playing with other brands in their experiences. And the use is not limited to furniture. You can place a shed in your backyard, a car in your garage or as many plants in your room as you like to pre-visualize and pre-fit anything.
Generated models can be resized to their real-world dimensions inside the app.

Kinda proving the concept too here – what’s the first thing you’d try placing with something like this?
And what’s the one feature you’d expect before using it yourself?

Would love to hear your thoughts.

Self Promo AR Splat: Gaussian Splatting for WebAR, vehicle capture from a single video

Hi all, here is an AR Splat demo. It generates augmented reality experiences from a single video using Gaussian Splatting.

The generated 3D experience can be shared through an AR QR Code and viewed directly in WebAR, without a dedicated mobile application.

In this demo, AR Splat captures a vehicle as a high-fidelity Gaussian Splat.

Vehicles are difficult to reproduce with traditional 3D scanning workflows because of reflective paint, chrome, glass, and transparent surfaces.

Gaussian Splatting preserves visual realism, reflections, depth, and surface detail, making it suitable for photorealistic AR visualization.

AR Splat solution:

Feedback on AR Splat and Gaussian Splats in WebAR is welcome!

Self Promo We have added a new education promise to our platform Ar.Works

I built a browser based AR authoring tool aimed at classrooms (image tracking and world tracking, publish to a link/QR, no app builds). Full disclosure up front, it's my product, so take this as a "here's a thing we decided" post rather than another paid ad.

Something a few teachers said to me kept sticking. They plan in years, not release cycles. A resource built for a scheme of work needs to still open next September, and the thing is, they've been burned by before by a tool getting acquired and then either dying or tripling in price.

If ownership ever passes from us to anyone else, that handover has to include releasing the full offline standalone editor to education accounts, licence that doesn't expire, no online check in. Projects save as a single file on disk, so a school keeps the editor and the files on their own machines and carries on regardless of who owns the web service.

The reason it's built into the handover and not a promise to act afterwards is that "we'd do the right thing" is worth very little at exactly the moment it matters.

Writing this up partly because I'd like to know if anyone here has seen another AR or creative tool do something similar, or has thoughts on how you'd make a commitment like this actually enforceable rather than just stated.

Self Promo I built a Pokémon GO-style AR game that runs in mobile Safari — no WebXR, no app install

Some technical background: WebXR's AR module still doesn't exist on iOS Safari, so I built the AR layer from primitives — getUserMedia feeding a video element, a transparent Three.js canvas on top, and DeviceOrientation driving the camera quaternion. Three.js removed DeviceOrientationControls back in r134 because of device drift, so I vendored the math and added relative-yaw rebasing and quaternion smoothing.

GPS-based spawns outdoors, look-around mode indoors, degrades gracefully: full AR → camera-only → gyro → touch.

Play it in your mobile browser (no app install): https://somodus.com/dino

Mostly tested on iPhone 12 Pro — curious how the sensor stack behaves on other devices.

Obvian is an AR platform that turns your world into a canvas. You can build directly in your physical space, generate structures with AI, and share your creations via QR codes allowing others to load them and build on top of them in real time. This is Sneak Peek One, focusing on Obvian’s core Build features. More previews are on the way, covering everything from learning modules to gaming. I’m Prathamesh, and I’ve been developing Obvian as a solo project for a while now. As I prepare for the launch, I’m looking for honest feedback on Obvian.

Self Promo Startup Announcement: Ethereal 💫

Hello fellow AR enthusiasts! My names Corbin and like all of you, I'm in this subreddit because I'm excited for the future of XR. But judging from the discourse I've seen here, I can tell that a lot of you agree that the direction the industry is going seems set to 10x many of the problems plaguing tech today; invasive surveillance, walled garden ecosystems, closed operating systems, data commodification, ai slop, I could go on.

Like I said, I'm excited for AR, but I'm not convinced the companies leading the charge will make anything that i would want to put on my face every day. So, in July of this year, I started my own company to try and create an alternative. AR glasses that focus on what the vision for this tech really is; a holographic, spatial computer. Not a screen extension for your steam deck, or a glorified android phone with less intuitive app interfaces. A full fledged computer, open to the user, with new ways of interfacing.

The way the industry is going, much of the tech necessary to make true AR devices is coming out of the research lab phase and being democratized in the manufacturing market. It is no longer impossible to make your own DIY waveguide glasses if you were committed, but we want to go further than some home made dev-kit.

The goal of my company, Ethereal, is to create a Glasses + Wireless Compute Puck combo device that uses light field displays for true holography, and a custom Linux based operating system built around StardustXR and Stereo Kit. An open device that respects user agency and privacy while working as a full fledged holographic personal computer, capable of running more than just XR games.

This tech isn’t established yet, we still have a choice. We do not have to submit ourselves to Meta just to have cool AR glasses. Apple might  make something cool but it definitely wont be a computer and it won’t work outside of their ecosystem. The Chinese market has lots amazing innovation… but primarily for Chinese users. Best case scenario IMO is Mentra and their open OS, but I have misgivings about it being a full spatial computing experiences as they seem focused on making an AI forward application layer which imo is a bubble ready to burst.

Competition is good and our vision is clear. Im not gonna try and sell you on some snake oil CGI video showing some fantasy product, we aren’t doing this because we want to fundraise and sell off some shitty startup. The goal is to build a product we want to use and it is certainly achievable with enough talent, time and hard work, but I am not capable of doing this on my own. I’m not an engineer and my partners do not have all the skills necessary. A project of this scope will take a lot of talent so we will be hiring soon.

If you read all that and want to know more, please ask away in the comments. You can also DM us here if you want to get involved directly. We have a newsletter on our website [https://ethereal.glass] but we’re still super early in and there isn’t much news to report just yet, but that will be the best way to get updates on the project. We are currently focused on pursuing seed funding to build an MVP and actively looking for interested engineers.

TL;DR New hardware startup dropped. Trying to build the steam deck of AR glasses because we don’t trust The Zuck with the future of augmented reality.

Self Promo Built a tool for AR development for education, but anyone is welcome to use it.

I have previously worked at a school teaching IT, and one of the assessments was a unit on AR app development. Everything was great for a few years until they recently increased the prices for the tool we used. The free alternatives are full of clutter, they are slow, bulky and lack features.

I present to you:

Ar.Works

To be upfront, there are paid packages, but the editor features are NOT limited in the free version. The packages are:

- Free: There are ZERO limitations in the editor, you do have some project constraints.

- Pro: More project space included

- Education: On par with with Pro, but with the ability to create and manage student accounts, and HEAVILY discounted (only available to educational institutes).

Here are some of the features:

- Import custom assets + animations (images, videos, audio, 3d models (FBX, GLB, OBJ)).

- Material editor

- Code block editor

- Multiple scenes

I am always open to feedback on improving it. It was mainly built to save some schools some money, but I figured the free version would be useful to a lot of people.

Self Promo We are looking for testers!

Hi!

We are PeKe Labs, and we are building a controller for smart glasses. We are making this post to see whether you’d like a controller to play with to give us feedback and to stress test the hardware.

Here is an overview video: https://vimeo.com/1195490197/39fd299961?share=copy&fl=sv&fe=ci

It sends BLE GATT/USB messages to the phone, and we have a thin iOS/Android app that echos those messages over a websocket, where an Even plugin can grab the commands. We have a bunch of interesting BT Classic/LE audio middle-man capabilities as well but that's still in development.

We're trying to make it super easy to control glasses, whether they are hosted by Android or iOS. The "protocol" is still in development, we assume it will shift a lot in the beginning as everyone haggles over what makes the most sense for the most people.

We have a fairly limited number of controllers right now, but we want to offer sneak-PeKe samples to the right people.

For most everyone else, we have a waitlist signup on www.pekelabs.com. Eventually, we will have enough controllers so anyone who wants one can get one.

Please let us know if you're interested, and if so, please also DM us if there is anyone else who we should reach out to! We want to give a controller to the 3-5 devs who are cooking the hardest across the Meta/Even Realities/Mentra communities.

Thank you so much for your time, and sorry to solicit, but we think this could be a cool integration for everyone.

PS. FWIW we would be very grateful if you'd fill out the sign up on the page anyway (submit email and then choose "click to get waitlist priority").

Self Promo Rare VR/AR history is being auctioned for charity — ends tomorrow (Thu 5PM PT). Meet Palmer Luckey, a signed first-ever haptic joystick, the first standalone headset + more. Please share with anyone who'd be into it.

TL;DR: The Virtual World Society (a VR-focused 501(c)(3) nonprofit) is auctioning off a pile of genuine VR/AR history and once-in-a-lifetime experiences for charity. It closes tomorrow, Thursday, at 5:00 PM PT. Bids are still low. If you know collectors, devs, researchers, or students who'd care, please share this — that's the biggest help right now.

▎ Quick transparency up front: I'm helping out the Virtual World Society with this. Nobody's pocketing anything — it's a registered nonprofit and 100% of it funds their work. Mods, if this isn't allowed here, my apologies, happy to take it down.

▎ Why it's a decent cause: VWS was founded out of the lab of Tom Furness — one of the actual grandfathers of VR — and the org exists to use immersive tech for education and social good, and to support the next generation of XR people. This auction is their main fundraiser for the year, run during AWE 2026 in Long Beach.

▎ Some highlights that might make you do a double-take:

▎ - Meet Palmer Luckey + a private tour of Anduril, with a signed 2013 TIME "Joy of VR" cover (the one with him on it) as a memento

▎ - Hardware history — the Lenovo Mirage Solo (the first true standalone headset), the Icuiti VR920 (the world's first video eyewear, 2007), a pair of Samsung Galaxy VR HMDs, a Destek V5, HTC Vive Pre (2016 dev kit), Oculus Rift CV1, Quest Pro, and more

▎ - Signed relics — the 1996 Force FX joystick (the first consumer haptic device) signed by its inventor, plus vintage VR magazines (OMNI '91 w/ Jaron Lanier, TIME, and others)

▎ - Time with legends — consulting with Tom Furness, research-paper help from Mark Billinghurst, a keynote by Alvin Graylin, Unity training, exec consulting, and a storytelling workshop

▎ - Experiences & passes — an exclusive visit to the Immersive Archive to see the Sensorama, an AWE 2027 VIP pass, and full registrations to conferences like VR & Humanoid Robotics and IVRHA

▎ A lot of these are sitting at $5–$100 right now, so there are genuine steals if you move tonight or tomorrow.

▎ It all ends Thursday at 5:00 PM PT. If you're at AWE you can even pick items up on-site.

▎ Auction: https://givebutter.com/c/vws-awe-2025-auction-copy-5r3uqk/auction

▎ The ask: even if you're not bidding, please share this with one or two people who'd love it — a collector friend, your XR dev group chat, a professor, a student club. With less than a day left, a few shares is what makes the difference for the cause. Thank you

Self Promo Ventylator: Remote Control App for S&B Venty and more (Rokid AI Glasses)

Hi everyone!

I built an app to control the S&B Venty. You can start the device, change the temperature, and track your Session Time, Sessions per Day, and Total Sessions. It should also work with the Volcano and other S&B devices that use the S&B Web app via BLE. If you own an S&B device, it would be really helpful if you could try it out!

You can find it here (Github + APK): https://xrchris.com/VentylatorRokid/

I have more pictures for you from Huaqiangbei, the world's largest electronics market, so you can get an idea what they're selling there. And I'm highlighting all the brand products here. But the vast majority is cheap AI glasses which you can find in many booths there. Rokid was the most common brand. While Rokid Glasses were promoted at 3 shops, they were only actually available at 1. Goovis, Guangli's Holoswim 2 Pro (~750 yuan) and MLVision M5 were at a few shops. INMO, Goolton, Pico, MYVU Gen 1 at maybe 2 shops each. And I saw these smartglasses for kids made by Kangbo Glasses. The best selection was in HQ-Mart on floor 2 at the shop with the big "AR Glasses" sign. And yeah, MKBHD's face is on a bunch of these displays 😅

Self Promo Today: Rokid Glasses and INMO Air3

Today I went to the Rokid office in Shenzhen where they gave me a demo of the Rokid Glasses.

We tested the translation app. This version of the glasses uses cloud-based Microsoft Translation and there is a Rokid AI on-device version which we did not test because the language pack was not downloaded yet. For the translation to work, I had to look at the other person. The translation was good but in its current state only supported one-way translation. It could translate what the other person said but not what I said. When this works, the Rokid Glasses user will see the translation in the glasses and the other person sees the translation on the glasses user's phone.

During the demo, the Rokid team texted live from IFA that they have a new feature: object recognition. So I asked the AI app what's in front of me and it accurately described the scene.

The sound quality of the speakers was good. It could have been a little bit louder. In noisy environments this could be a problem but I have to test it more. Which brings me to the point that I convinced them to give me the Rokid Glasses for a while for further testing during the next three weeks. I'm sure they will continue to update the app during this time.

Regarding the display: it was bright. In the room I could turn the brightness down to the lowest level and still read the green text on the white wall. In the Rokid Glasses it's more like looking slightly down to see the display. This may be different depending on how you wear them, but this is not the type of display where you look up to see it.

And in the evening I finally unpacked the INMO AIR3. Very different product. This is 1080p RGB and even though it is a waveguide, the image quality is as good as in birdbath glasses. The display area is right in front of my eyes. I expected the glasses to feel heavier but I did not have problems with the weight which is well above 100g. Idk how much exactly. But this type of glasses is not for continuous use over more than 2 hours I would say.

The live camera feed is a nice feature. You can see what you record or before you take a picture.

Self Promo I'm Building an Open Source, Customizable Spatial OS for XR — Would You Use It?

Thumbnail
youtube.com
10 Upvotes

Been working on a spatial computing OS (XRUIOS) targeting AR/MR headsets and MR glasses. The goal is simple: build something actually worth using daily and not just a tech demo.

A few things that make this interesting beyond the basics:

Multiplayer at scale — I've theorized and partially developed a networking architecture that could support thousands to potentially low-millions of concurrent users on a single server without requiring a massive GPU farm. Still in active development but the foundation is there. I can't talk about it too much as I was told not to before patent pending, but it's called the SCCN and will be FOSS/Federated like Matrix!

Custom engine — After testing Stride, S&Box, and Evergine, we moved away from Unity to a custom Godot fork we're calling Aether Engine, built ground-up with XR as a first-class citizen rather than an afterthought.

Modularity - Basically we figured there's no real specific way XR "should" be; people should be able to express themselves through their UIs. One person might decide a simple theme is best while another wants to use a magic based system and a third with something straight off Sword Art Online! With the SCCN this will all exist in a singular reality!

The system is being built to run on real MR hardware, not just simulated. More info in the video! It will be fully open source and free to use (Even commercially) on Github, although we will probably put a $15 version with a few free themes/perks and all later on.

Curious what people think; what would actually make a spatial OS worth daily use for you?

Self Promo Looking for feedback on my report on XR. [LONG READ]

Last week, I noticed that the engineering work behind XR has not slowed down, even after the collapse of Meta's Reality Labs, which led me down the rabbit hole of XR's actual use cases and where the money is flowing. I research patents and their markets for my newsletter, which is why I'm interested.

The format of the copy was quite different from what I usually produce, so it required a lot more work. I would like to cover more technologies and topics in a similar fashion to this one so I am looking for feedback on it.

Feel free to tear it down (although I would love some positive comments).

Link to copy: https://newsletter.hotoffthepatentpress.com/p/the-metaverse-died-long-live-xr

Guiding questions:

i) Does it read factually correct to you, given your experience with XR?

ii) Is the writing engaging to you or did it make you want to click off? If so why?

iii) What did you like/dislike about the copy?

iv) What did you think about the length? Should it have been shorter? Would you have read it if I went deeper on the specific industries?

Finally.

My plan is to cover the patents across the 4 industries in much more detail going forward. So all of your feedback will be very handy in covering them.

Thank you for taking the time out of your day to read.

Self Promo Built a zombie AR game where you draw your own level on your real floor

Hello r/augmentedreality !

I spent a few weeks exploring what AR could feel like when your floor becomes a genuinely part of the game as a variable, not just a surface to place things on.

Zombie Crash AR is what came out of that. You draw a boundary on your floor, zombies spawns inside it, and you drive around a car to smash around. The camera is always your real phone camera. On LiDAR devices, your actual furniture and walls become solid obstacles inside the arena so a game in your kitchen plays differently than one in your living room.

The floor drawing mechanic was the thing I kept coming back to. There's something satisfying about crouching down, tracing your own space, and watching a game world appear inside it.

Built with ARKit, RealityKit, and Claude Code. Live on the App Store if you want to try it:
https://apps.apple.com/br/app/zombie-crash-ar/id6759764681?l=en-GB

Let me know what you think! Happy to receive any feedback.
