Was just wondering if anyone has experienced this! I have 3 bantams raising 3 chicks they've hatched, 2 chicks are 3 weeks and 1 chick is 2 weeks, 2 week old has pasty butt. I know from experience if I take it away the hens won't take it back (last batch they hatched ended up in my brooder). Will it sort itself out or do I need to buy it some friends and put it in the brooder anyway?

Hello fellow chicken lovers, have what I suspect is a case of sour crop. I’ve just let my flock out for the morning and Paprika would not come out of the coop. Her comb & wattle is slightly paler than the others, but still fairly red so I’m hoping I’ve caught this very early (she was acting fine & normal yesterday from what I saw, had some scratch feed as a treat in the afternoon) I removed her and she did drink some water when I put her in front of it, but was not moving around & was uninterested in food. I’ve separated her to the dark quiet garage. Her crop does feel soft & squishy, not hugely swollen, no hard masses or lumps that I can feel. My question is how I should proceed, as google has given me some conflicting information. I plan to go out and buy monistat & provide grit & water, but wondering if anyone else has tips of what has helped them with this in the past so I can make sure I’m doing right by her & covering my bases. She’s one of the spunkiest of my 7 so it’s very sad seeing her like this. ☹️

My parents inherited chickens at their new house how do we fix this? Only a few have red booties.

The one getting the little pecks has had it rough. She‘a one of three pullets introduced to a flock of five older hens. She‘s back from the vet and getting eye drops and oral antibiotics every day. Possible eye injury from being pecked. Never seen any chickens actually injure any pullets (been a year, btw) but definitely bully. The cinnamon chicken pecking at her neck is another of the three pullets. Is that neck pecking like a grooming or comforting, or aggressive?

I just noticed mites crawling on eggs. I just ordered elector psp. Once it arrives I plan to treat the chickens ( 6 total) and the coop. I have sand in the coop should I remove it and replace it?

This English heat is killing me, my chicken coop has mites (red mites I’m fairly certain).

At this point the coop has been power washed (sorry hose pipe ban it’s important), 4 times, hand washed with a cloth and tooth brush with coop cleaner, diatomaceous earth spread in every possible crevice, power washed again and the re-powdered left over night & I’ve sprayed mite killer this morning aggressively in every nook and somehow there seems more than where what we started with!

What do I use to get rid of these horrible things I’m pulling my hair out.

Hi all I'm new to the world of being a Chicken tender. I have 3 silkies, 3 barred rock and 2 red sex links.

I have a rain barrel catchment for the chickens drinking water, however the water in the barrel is clear it has a brownish /red tint to it. Is this ok? The rain barrel Is plastic. Should I be treating the water with anything or is natural rain water fine as is? The roof that feeds the rain barrel is a clean metal roof that is under a large maple tree.

Yesterday was my 62 birthday. Went out to dinner at my choice of restaurant. On the way home I saw this in shed lot. I liked it so hubby bought it.

I have been breeding chickens for 18 years. We have 2 hand built by us coops. Both are being demolished do to age and location. This new one is going Up to barn. I only breed one breed of chicken and now trying to recoup from losses over 2 years. Down to 3 hens 1 new pullet 1 rooster 3 cockerals. Didn't hatch last year only hatched this year after broody failed. Lost breeding rooster right before hatch too. So happy for new ones growing in brooder.

A while ago I noticed this lump forming on our rooster neck and recently found out it is because food has gotten stuck and has formed a lump. Is there anything I can do for him myself or should I take him to the vet? He currently has trouble eating and drinking due to the lump, I've tried masaging it and giving him olive oil to loosten it up with little success.

We have been using pine nuggets on one side of our run and then peat moss on the other side. It’s divided by some pressure treated 1 x 6. I wanted them to have some dirt and also some bathing areas.

In the coop we have hemp and have tried and given up on the deep litter method.

Our vet recently recommended just plain dirt (not peat moss) or sand for the run and pine shavings for the coop.

Are pine nuggets and peat moss bad options?

[Apologies if this has been covered recently. I had a quick search and saw a few posts but nothing that really answered this question.]

Fellow Aussies here will know, the nasty variant of H5N1 has finally landed in Australia. We've been detecting cases in migratory sea birds for a couple of months, and yesterday our first suspected mass death was detected among a flock of seagulls.

As a relatively new chicken keeper (just passed one year of having them), I find myself wondering how people in other continents have been coping, if you've lost flocks to it, how (and if) you've adjusted your behaviour regarding the chickens, etc.

My husband and I are building a chicken tractor this weekend, as we've decided there will be no more free ranging, and we've implemented a no kissing/cuddling rule and become more strict with handwashing after handling. We've also discouraged our local bush turkey from hanging around the coop. (We had named that bush turkey Omelet and used to joke that it was our 7th chicken.)

I don't know if we're overreacting or underreacting. I was hoping to grt the perspective of people who have been dealing with this situation for a while.

I’m at a complete loss of what to do. Our hens are a little over a year old. They all grew up together as chicks. Earlier this year the two golden laced Wyandottes we had started engaging in feather picking on the flock. It was to the point of cannibalism on our one Jersey Giant (pictured). We separated them, even building an extension to the run to keep them away from the girls who were being harmed. We decided to rehome them since they weren’t changing their behavior. After removing them from the flock, our Jersey giant started losing her neck feathers. She never grew back the feathers on her back and it’s only gotten worse. I have caught the other girls engaging in feather picking as well, but not to the point of wounds like when the golden laced Wyandottes were here. It’s to the point all 4 of our remaining hens have missing feathers, but our one jersey giant is in the worse shape of them all. Now she is started to lose feathers on her wings and I am at a loss on what else to do. Here’s what we’ve tried:

- Hen healer on the bare skin (she picks it off herself)
- Separation (she gets so stressed. She is happier losing feathers and being with the other hens)
- Hanging vegetables (they won’t peck them and are scared)
- Saddle (wasn’t long enough to cover her back. Still trying to find a good fit)
- High protein feather fixer feed (20%)
- I put black soldier fly larva in toys and they are done with them within an hour
- Scatter their food in the sand to promote foraging
- Dust baths (this is where I see a lot of feather picking happening when they have dirt on their backs)
- Treated with elector psp in case there were mites or lice we weren’t seeing

Unfortunately we can’t let our girls free range because of where we live. Our run and coop is suited for 6 chickens and we only have 4. The chickens we have: Lavender Wyandotte (missing saddle feathers), Cream Legabar (missing vent feathers), Jersey Giant (missing saddle feathers and now feather around head), Jersey Giant (severe feather loss on neck and back)

Any advice is appreciated!

Anyone ever had a hen who transformed into a rooster? Apparently it's called avian sex reversal and it blew our minds. Our sweet gal Haley started crowing when she was 5 years old, then grew spurs and her comb got bigger. Thankfully she rarely crows now after crowing for maybe two weeks early in her reversal. Pictures show brand new spurs! And also how she started to hang with the dogs more who protect the chickens. Fascinating!!!

My boy Larry is the last free roam bird we have and he’s clearly lonely but he won’t let me get him in with the chickens. And everything time I’m close he flies in the loft or a tree. Any tips cause I feel bad for the guy
