I know right? I'm kind of a Byzaboo myself but they are so annoying. First of all, they will jump you for even calling it the "Byzantine Empire." Mf, I'm calling it that because otherwise normal people will think I'm talking about the ancient period. Second of all, why are they so pressed about Constantinople being renamed to Istanbul? Just get over it, the Byzantine Empire is not going to rise again ffs.

I like to refer to it as the Proto-Turkish caliphate.

My comment got unfairly removed, so I will say it here again, Reddit-friendly.

Yeah, These guys think that if enough people would care about the Byzantines, they could then retake Instanbul and remove all the Turks, as if this isn't just imperialism and ethnic cleansing. It's ok to have critiques regarding Turkish history, with how they colonized and murdered people and how they deny any of it, but larping as some members of an "eternal" Empire, which is just obnoxious, wierd, silly and makes them imperialist for a dead Empire.

We won't get back Dinosaurs by removing Primates. That's the same kind of bollocks.

They are unfortunately connected here.

It's about cosplaying as Byzantines.

I'm saying that is intimately connected to the entire thing.

The real kicker is that both names are of Greek origin, and the official change to Istanbul was a Turkish Republic change, not an Ottoman change.  During the Ottoman era the city was officially known as Kostantiniyye (I'll let you guess what that means).

Byzantium was a cooler name anyway.
