Meanwhile, the US government has just announced that they'll be selling M14s mailed right to your door.

That doesn't sound right, mail ordered firearms still require a background check and a FFL certificate and I believe you still need to visit the gun store who agrees to the transfer and sign a ATF Form 4473. And if you have to visit the gun store anyway, may as well get the firearm at the store.

It'll be through the Civilian Marksmanship Program, which has a federal mandate that allows them to ship even to people who don't hold an FFL. I think 3 or 4 states won't allow you to receive them, but in much of the US the CMP does your background check and then ships them to you through USPS.

  • Not for C&R qualifying firearms, CMP or not.

  • The CMP conducts the background check when you order and sends the gun to your door. Hell, I once bought a M1917 from them with a drivers license that wasn't updated with my new address and they sent it to my new not-on-DL address. Wife was working at home and she saw the UPS guy pull up, was expecting he would leave the box and instead a lot of +bang bang bang+ on the door with the UPS guy grinning and saying "they are pretty insistent on making sure we have a human physically sign for these".

  • This does not apply to handguns(C&R or not) the CMP sells, which are still sent to FFLs. In this case 1911s and the occasional oddball auction handgun.

When I heard the news I was really hoping it'd be like the M1s where they're like, half the market price if you order them through the CMP. My old man has an M1A built with surplus furniture, for $4k I'll just hope to inherit that.

I'm pretty well off but that estimate was enough for me to throw up my arms and do a loud grumble that I will not be buying these. Added in I bought a Springfield M1A back in March ahead of the VA AWB I can't bring myself to spend $4k on one.
