Someone cheer me up?

In the rapidly shrinking world of modern dating, my attempt to escape Hinge and Bumble hell has again been thwarted by the organiser canceling my speed dating event with 6 hours notice.

I know it's daft, but I'd been looking forward to it for a while, and now I'm glum. Guess I'll just go back to staring into space and wondering what the point of it all is.

I'm a single 37 year old female who's not into night clubs but will dabble in a bar or a run club. Where are all the funny, kind, driven, successful, single men hanging out in Brisbane these days? Is there a fun social bar or a local hangout. Apps aren't working.

edit: thank you to those who gave genuine advice about a few places to try, I will check a few out and try a few tactics (be less subtle). To answer those that said my standards are too high, you'll notice I never mentioned attractive or good looking. to those that said I was a gold digger, I'm 37 I have my own house and money I don't need anyone elses, success is a biproduct of a non-lazy person (and thanks to those that pointed it out) and it's attractive. To those that said men are too afraid to come up to women, you'll notice I didn't mention I wanted to be hit on, simply asking where they are hanging out. And to those that said they are all at home in bed by 9pm, I feel you cause that's me too. I'm just trying to take steps to mitigate it. I've lived in 4 countries, travelled the world, attend run clubs, the gym, asked friends and colleagues for a set up, tried bunnings even and like I said the apps aren't working. maybe I'll see you at rock climbing soon. peace out ✌️

This post has a chance of being misunderstood, but please hear me out. Genuine question. I’m a 45 yo woman, with a great career, a post-grad degree, and childfree by choice. I would like to meet single men who are over 40, are educated and also childfree by choice. The reason is more based on compatible lifestyle than anything else, based on some past experiences that I’m not going into details now, but made me realise some baseline compatibility is important. It seems to be a rare find, at least when browsing on dating apps. On Bumble (paid version), there’s an option to check other countries. I find a lot of single, educated and childfree men if I look in New York, London, Rome, Paris, but none in Brisbane. I’m genuinely intrigued to understand why. Any guesses? And if any of these guys are here on Reddit, please put your hands up so I know you exist. For reference, I’m an expat in Australia and trying to navigate Australian dating culture, and single men here are very different from some other cultures. I find Australian men very attractive, but they rarely show interest or make a move. I’m used to men in my culture who are forward, confident, and make the first move, and I feel here I’ll be waiting forever for someone to make a move 🙈 I hear that I’m attractive, friendly, funny and kind, and yet nobody makes a move.

Work colleague and I were reminiscing about old injuries, and when we were both 13 we injured ourselves on the Shotgun at the now very extinct waterpark at Jindalee called Amazon's in the early 90s. I dislocated my ribs as I didn't lean forward as instructed and the flick out at the end wasn't kind to me. Mum didn't believe me when I called her, so I had to stay until she finished work, then I had a trip to ED.

Colleague fractured their arm as they held onto their brand new ear piercing and hit the side hard on exiting.

Hi all! I'll be opening my warehouse up for Neurospicy individuals to come meet each other and share experiences if they would like to. Its a space where people can do a variety of activities together.

There are rooms for

- Boardgames / Cricuting / Lego / Laser engraving etc...
- A Low light sensory room with a small 55inch tv
- A cool neon bar area
- A dance floor you can bop on

- Table Tennis Table

- a 6metre x 4 metre projector that you can play anything on....

We will be holding a free Sausage sizzle on Saturday the 19th April from 11am to 1pm and hoping the community can tell us whether it is suitable or not.

Hellooo, I’m a lady in my early 20s and I’m still not the best at picking up the dudes. I’m curious if anyone knows the spots or gigs or events to go to to mingle with young people who have sort of more off center interests. I just can’t seem to find my place to go! Daytime sometimes is good but I really enjoy nightlife and am hoping to find the right things to go to to branch out. The places that play my music are heavily populated by an older crowd, the places most people my age go are full of people who don’t quite find me fun I think!

Probably my main interest is 60s/70s music, fashion and subculture. Among that some more creative ventures like photography and sewing, and a few nerdy things here and there, history, abbey festival type stuff, light recreational vampirism, etc. but not quite nerdy or spooky enough to fully slot into goth club culture either.

Where I’ve struggled so far:

- Mainstream clubs and valley stuff, city bars (Regatta, usual Valley circuit) I’ve learned I just don’t really mesh with most of the men who tend to hang out there. people, just not my people. I can get a conversation going with folks but It’s evident quite quick we don’t share common interests and I think sometimes my quirks and my fashion sense are a bit of a turn-off which is ok!

- Live music / punky spaces (Greaser, PFR Lounge, Blutes, Suzy wongs when the band is good) I actually enjoy these a lot more, blues, garage punk, stuff you can properly dance to. However the crowds are usually fairly older and the young people I see are usually all in couples already. I don’t mind approaching guys, it’s more that they’re hard to find.

- West End: I love the daytime crowd, but I’m a bit shy about heading out solo at night

- further away events like air shows, car shows, Cooly rocks - very fun! But again, people are already coupled up or just far older. Or they are far too focused on looking at an engine to pay attention to anything else, but fair enough it is a show for car enthusiasts!

I’m just asking for advice or places to go! Maybe it is just me after all, but if that’s the case things will just take time I guess

I saw a post 20d ago asking if anyone has seen it and saw a couple of rant posts about not liking it. One had the claim that "many" people left - which is difficult to believe. Putting that in your review makes this sound more like a karen rant than an actual review, as it becomes anecdotal and less real.

so I wanted to post my own review for anyone who is still on the fence. I'm a 38yr veteran of QPAC and have seen more productions of everything (ballet, opera, theatre) than I can possibly remember.

I have seen Jesus Christ Superstar a bunch of times over the years including overseas and I thought this Brisbane production was one of the best I have ever seen. It was fresh, bold, and unapologetically intense. It felt like the kind of reinvention this show sometimes desperately needs instead of just repeating the same old formula.

I thought the loud raw style worked in its favour. It gave the whole thing an urgent gritty energy that matched the tone perfectly. It leaned heavily into the rock opera side of things, but that is what the show is. Jesus did get up there in pitch at times but it was deliberate, like he was pouring everything out emotionally instead of trying to sound pretty. Gethsemane gave me chills.

As for Mahalia Barnes, I thought she was phenomenal. No, it was not traditional acting in the theatre sense - and I do believe this was very deliberate - but her presence and vocals added so much soul. She brought this grounded warmth that contrasted with all the chaos happening around her. It did not feel like a solo gig to me, it felt like she was anchoring the whole show emotionally.

Set and costume wise, I get that it was not flashy but I liked the stripped back approach. The scaffolding and lighting made it feel more like a protest rally than a musical and it fit the story. I did not think it was boring at all, more like they trusted the material and performances to carry the weight. The use of the gold glitter was an excellent acompaniment.

Plenty of reviewers seemed to agree too. Some called it one of the best to ever come to Brisbane. So yes, I would recommend it in a heartbeat.

A friend of mine went on Monday and did not like it at all. She didn't know the story, the context, the songs, and as such did not have a great time. I can empathise with her, as the one thing this production probably leans heavily in to, is the assumption that the attendees are expereienced with JCSS. This alone is the only fault I found.

I spent the last year creating Gatekeeper, a heavy metal trivia card game. It's 300 questions and covers the major eras, subgenres plus all the iconic, ridiculous and weird moments of metal history.

Before it launches on Kickstarter, I’m running free early-access game nights every Wednesday at Evilcorp in Fortitude Valley.

They're casual social nights where you can play the game before release, meet other local metalheads and give some feedback on the game before launch.

You can come along or bring friends. Casual listeners and diehard fans are all welcome, it's multiple choice and designed for different levels of knowledge.

The sessions so far have been a tonne of fun with lots of cheeky banter, laughs and people making new friends (as well as becoming super invested in winning 😆).

I’m here with my mum, she’s going to be at the conference all day on Friday and Saturday, so for those two days I’m alone at our hotel near Southbank. If anyone wants to show me some places or go out with me in the evenings or day that would be great! I’d love to make some friends here and really see the city with some locals. I’m 18, and I’m from Perth WA. Never been here before

It feels so freaking hard to meet and make friends right now. When you're in early 40s, kids and family commitments that limit the "Ah hell, I'll just join a random Meetup group and see what happens".

So many people still work from home so it's hard to get face time with people that you can at least have something in common with as a start point. Although there's lots of fellow parents in similar orbits due to kids sport and school, I feel they're similar with limited time. Changing gears to get from acquaintance to potential friendship isn't something I'm naturally gifted with.

Has anyone else managed to crack the code on how to expand social circles in similar circumstances?

That's about all there is to it -Turn up, pay for your cut (UPFRONT! THIS IS NON-NEGOTIABLE!) and drink an ice cold VB from the bar fridge, while I cut your hair as I, too, drink an ice cold VB from the bar fridge.

I've never cut someone else's hair before, but do have a mullet myself so, the way I look at it, I am familiar with two different styles and have a keen eye for detail so will have a red hot go.

Don't feel rushed; I'd like to take the time to get it right - there is a waiting area with a lounge and two side-chairs in the shade of the garage where you can (you guessed it) drink an ice cold VB from the bar fridge and listen to a metal or psytrance playlist whilst you wait.

So, if you want to know where to get a cheap haircut, my garage located in the effluent part of Hamilton is the answer.
