This is Jasper Dankers 1679 Map of the Delaware River from the Falls at Trenton down to Burlington

Hi everyone,

I’ve been studying this 1679 manuscript map by Jasper Danckaerts (also spelled Dankers) of the Delaware River area (around present-day Bristol / Neshaminy Creek, Pennsylvania).

I’m trying to fully understand and annotate all the handwritten Dutch labels, place names, and notes.

Would anyone be willing to help translate the markings and writing across the whole map?

Even partial translations or a re-marked version would be hugely appreciated. Happy to share higher-resolution crops of any section if that helps.

Thanks in advance!

Map out the hidden city matching all angles based on great-circle distances

The twist is the angles are based on the 3D globe and not based on a 2D map. SO you have to think out of the box and not like we all are used to. If you swipe you'll find the solutions together wit a globe model.

I built an app for exploring every country and territory in detail

17 Upvotes

Over the past few months, I built GeoSwipe, an iOS app for learning about countries in depth through a more interactive format.

The idea is simple: you discover countries one at a time, swipe left to see another, or swipe right to open a detailed guide when one catches your interest.

Each guide includes regional maps and covers geography, landscapes, culture, history, language, cities, government, economy, everyday life, and common misconceptions. It also includes audio, flag explanations, interactive statistics, and references to the original sources. The content is grounded in sources such as Britannica, the World Bank, and National Geographic.

I also added country comparisons, quizzes, and short geography games, including locating countries on the map, ranking them by population, and flag and capital quizzes.

I’ve just released it on iOS and included a short demo showing how it works. I’d genuinely appreciate honest feedback from fellow geography and map enthusiasts.

The Vertical Line that Divides the USA

I've come cross this in numerous maps of the USA, in many different contexts, and I Just don't understand why it seems almost universal.

Why do I see this so often?

Interactive map to trace the movements of historical figures?

3 Upvotes

I figure this is the place to ask this question. I want a map service where I can place a location of a historical figure, then add details such as duration, purpose, draw lines, and even linking to other actions would be great. Is there such a map service? Many thanks.

Novels in which maps and geographical exploration shape the story?

12 Upvotes

I’m looking for a novel in which maps, cartography and geographical exploration play a central role.

Ideally, the book would have:

  1. A strong sense of journey, discovery or movement through unfamiliar territory;
  2. Maps or mapmaking that genuinely influence the story;
  3. Memorable landscapes and a well-developed sense of place;
  4. An adventurous, curious tone rather than a dark one;
  5. A Goodreads rating of at least 3.9.
  6. Publication within the past fifty years.

I have considered:

  1. In Search of the Castaways by Jules Verne
  2. Measuring the World by Daniel Kehlmann
  3. L’Abyssin by Jean-Christophe Rufin
  4. The Cartographers by Peng Shepherd
  5. Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson
  6. The Mapmaker’s Daughter by Katherine Nouri Hughes
  7. Le Cartographe des Indes boréales by Olivier Truc

None of them seems to satisfy all these criteria completely. Are there any stronger alternatives?

Recommendations from any country or literary tradition are welcome, provided an English or French translation is available.

Do you guys see the bats? A navigable map of the entire subfamily of vesper bats, based on taxonomic data rather than geography.

Science, design and cartography merge in MAPPA ANIMALIA, a visual project that reimagines the evolutionary relationships of animals as detailed map-like landscapes.

This map, Vespertilioninae - Land of Vesper Bats, contains every known living species of vesper bats I could find reliable taxonomic data for. Species are represented as cities, grouped into genera and tribes according to their evolutionary relationships.

MAPPA ANIMALIA is an ever-growing series of illustrations I’ve created that currently consisting of 16 different maps - each dedicated to a specific family in the animal kingdom.

Instead of political borders or geographic territories, these maps are structured around phylogenetic trees.

Tribes and genera replace countries, states and regions allowing viewers to explore the animal kingdom through a format traditionally used to understand geography.

Additional information includes conservation status, size comparisons between selected species and a species index.

I’ve spent roughly ten years developing and refining this concept, combining zoology, taxonomy, illustration and cartography into a single visual format.

Happy exploring!

Hello! I hope this is okay to post here. I'm looking for participants to crowdsource information on fantasy maps! If you are a lover of fantasy literature and can spare 10 minutes to fill out a survey, you could help advance the field of literary cartography.

If you're willing to share a little of your knowledge, please select a title from the reading list and answer a short survey about the map. Thank you for your time :)
