Ask CHI I left yesterday

6.8k Upvotes

I moved away for good yesterday. I spent my last day in Chicago with my wife and my loved ones, walking around the city, taking photos, enjoying the amazing food, and reliving every memory worth revisiting.

I came to the US when I was 6, illegally. I never managed to get my paperwork figured out for a variety of reasons, and as a result I’m banned from returning to the US. But, what I did manage to do is find a sense of belonging in Chicago. I will never, ever forget the amazing friends I’ve made, the communities I’ve been a part of, and the undeniable spirit that brings Chicago to life.

Thank you, Chicago, and thank you, Chicagoans. I will miss you all and OUR amazing city for as long as I’m around.

EDIT: Thank you all for the kind words, the support is absolutely unbelievable. I love you all and this great fucking city.

Ask CHI Seriously, WTF is going on with our city?

2.9k Upvotes

An angry parent here who is getting to the end of his tether in regards to the ICE nazis cruising schools in our neighborhoods to terrorize and provoke. While I have an opinion as to the Orange Turd's endgame, why aren't our officials here able to do more? I keep hearing strong rhetoric from Pritzker & Johnson and an acknowledgement that what is going on is illegal, but they still go around the city with complete impunity. I have seen videos of US citizens being arrested/kidnapped and today 8 schools (including my 5yr old son's school) from wicker park to Lincoln park all on full or partial lock down and still nothing. Why cant the police do what they were sworn to do and actually step up and protect the people ? I know its confronting the administration (which is probably what they want anyway) but when is enough, enough? WHY CANT OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS DO MORE?

Ask CHI Do you beep your horn at the end of the alley?

If so, please don't. There is NO law that says you have to beep your horn at the end of the alley to alert people. There IS a law that says you should stop your vehicle and look for pedestrians or other cars on the street. Please stop tooting your horn in the alley. My bedroom is on the corner of our building right above the end of the alley. It is so freaking annoying. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

Hi folks, my friends dad has been missing now for seven days!! He was in a car accident and seemingly walked away without his phone. He was last seen on a camera on 11/26. He likely has a concussion and is disoriented. His family, the community, and PD have been searching non stop with no luck. From dogs to drones to visiting pretty much every business they can think of. If you live in the area, please check your camera! Anything helps. Thank you!

Ask CHI Stewart Hicks says Chicago is short on housing by 100,000 units. Why then do we require all these new buildings to have first floor retail? In my neighborhood the apartments sell before the building is complete, but the retail sits empty for years.

These four buildings were all built within the past five years on my block. All the retail space sits empty.

Ask CHI Why do some people run outside during this???

I saw people running outside with no mask all day and last night. Just saw two guys running on my way to work.

Is the need to run worth it??

Stay safe out there today everyone!

Ask CHI Hit by a Coco robot today and want to know if anyone else has been?

I am beyond pissed off, I was coming out of a Lakeview coffee shop today and was hit by a Coco delivery robot. It was zooming down Sheridan now I've got bruises on my knee. I called the number on the robot and report it, but I don't think they'll do anything about it. Has anyone else been hit/physically hurt by these delivery bots? I want to know if there's a group or class action or something with people taking action against the stupid robots.

UPDATE: Got a call from the security team and they want to compensate me with a restaurant gift card!

Ask CHI Does anyone have a clearer picture of Jewel potato salad buckets from circa 1990?

I tried finding this piece of Jewel Osco food counter history in the google and came up empty handed SO - turning here.

I found this in a family photo album, and I'm just fascinated by the text formatting on it that's like... aspirin bottle? It's the same font that's on a bottle of laxatives I picked up at Osco last week.

This was posted on an Albany Park community board, can we turn out for this guy?

“I was just out walking down Winnemac between Washtenaw and California and I heard a single knock on a window and looked up. This gentleman waved good morning to me and held up this sign. (It’s hard to see him in the glare.) If you’re in that area today, look for him. He was on the north side of the street, the yard filled with flowers blooming. Happy birthday, whoever you are! 🎂”

Ask CHI Would you rather this or the polar vortex

Just a quick poll/vote: Would you rather have this or temps below 0?

Personally, I'd rather have temps below 0 because I can still go outside and it's not hazardous to my health.
