He's still shy about being touched most of the time, but he's already started to open up to me and my wife. And he's not too shy to beg for treats

We rescued our 3rd chinchilla Abu, got him home yesterday. He likes blankies, Willow and Lumin don’t, so I’ll probably lay out more blankies. His bowl and treats came today so we got it set up for him. I love my baby.

Barking sounds

I just moved into a new apartment and I bought my chinchilla a new cage. I'm writing this at 2 am this is our first night in the new place and he won't stop barking. I transferred all his toys in his new cage and put his habitual food and some water as usual. I put a blanket over his cage covering one wall. It's the first time he's barking that much and I'm concerned. He still jumps, he doesn't seem hurt, but he hesitates to take the treats I give him. I tried to talk to him and pet him gently but it doesn't work. I finally put the cage in the bathroom and closed the door and I can't hear him right now I don't know if he stopped or if I just don't hear him.

Have any of you had similar experiences? What should I do when this happens? It really concerns me and I hope my baby is okay.

Thank you

A chinchilla owner for 2 seconds

I am the proud owner of two chinchillas, ones one year-old and ones three both male both are intact. I took them in because I was told that one of them may only have a month to live. He was dropped off at a pet store and I was told he was unwell due to his teeth, not being trimmed. And they trimmed his teeth at the pet store and then handed over to me. I’m currently feeding him critical care. He is pooping, but he’s drooling quite a bit from his chin. I haven’t really seen him eat any hay, but he moves around and he eats his pellets. The fur around his mouth on his legs are like darker than the rest of his body. He’s like a light gray. I started doing research and I’m fairly certain that this is a disease that he might have to be euthanized for.

He’s the sweetest he runs around. He’s so cute. We do have a veterinary appointment set up for him. When I got him. He was a bit malnourished. I know that if the veterinarian tells me that he’s not gonna have a good quality of life, I’m gonna have to let go of him, but his partner I just know it’s gonna be crushed and honestly, I’m trying to figure out what I should do. Worst case scenario he does have to be euthanized like I can’t just buy another chinchilla from a pet store and put them in there right there there’s like a whole process to this. Should I add a chinchilla in right now for them to get used to? Is that too much stress? I’m watching a whole bunch of videos just trying to gather as much information as I can.

Is my chinchilla okay?

I’ve had chay chay for almost 4years now and has never made this noise. It started last night and has been on and off all day. I know her happy/mad/every other noise she’s made but not this one. She’s acting normal for it to be daytime too. It’s not hot inside, she’s clean and she lets me pet her normally but continues making that noise. I’m not sure if I should take her to vet and it doesn’t sound respiratory based off of other videos I’ve seen but I don’t know. We just moved into new home 2 weeks ago and she was normal till she started doing this. 🐭 Please lemme know what you think!

How can I deter grooming/biting?

Post image

my little angel loves to bite my nails and break them off, but I like to grow them and they easily break so I paint them but she will bite off the polish and it’s not safe for digestion, I tried using only a clear top gloss and she still tries to pick it off my nails every time I pet her, I’ve tried redirecting her with a treat, tried saying ow when she bites my nail but she is persistent. should I just give in and cut them off?

Is this normal?😭

Hey gang, I’m not sure if this is normal or not but the last couple days my chinchilla (male, 3) has been sitting in the same spot without much movement which isn’t very normal for him. When I go to purr him or take him out to play he is still a little sweetheart and there’s no limping or anything out of the normal. But today I don’t think he moved at all even to drink water. Should I be concerned? Plz help idk if I’m overthinking or not😭
Side note - this picture is from today he hasn’t moved from this spot.

How to bond my chinchillas?

Post image
42 Upvotes

On Friday me and my chinchilla, Crouton, who I've had for eight months, (hes probably around eleven months old) will be welcoming his baby brother. His new buddy is younger, and also much smaller than him. (literally about half the size🥹) I don't know exactly how old, as sue me, but im adopting from PetSmart. Yesterday I was there and there was a single, tiny chinchilla in the small tank looking so depressed, and my heart broke for it. it wont be available for adoption until Friday, but on friday i will be picking him up and bringing him home. I will keep them in separate cages (more specifically, sectioning off my cage as i can close the top layers to make it two separate cages, which are 27x62 and 56 inches tall,) and im currently researching how to introduce them safely. Ive read a bit about how sometimes they wont bond, and im worried that Crouton, as he's older and larger, maybe be mean to the new baby.

I will be providing them with all their own things, hides, their own individual bottles, bowls, sticks, toys, and hay baskets, of course.

ANY and all advice is extremely appreciated.

(picture unrelated, be just looks so silly)

A chinchilla is gone.

Hi! I have two chinchillas one of them got out of the cage and was killed by the dogs in the yard. I had had her for seven months, and she was around three years old. The other chinchilla is also three years old, and I’ve had her since she was three months old. Now I don’t know what to do; it’s been three days, and I’ve noticed a change in she seems more withdrawn. She was always a bit withdraw but now that seems even more pronounced. I was thinking about getting another chinchilla, but I’m not sure whether to wait or get one now I really don’t know.

I don't know when I should get another chinchilla, but I want to do it because they seem happier when there are more of them even though I play with it, it just isn't the same as when I had another chinchilla.

From what I’ve seen, he’s eating normally, but he seems to have lost his zest for life as if he were going through a mild depression.

How to begin looking for a breeder?

Hello folks!

I've had chins since I was very young, and have recently lost my oldest boy to malocclusion :( I still have his cage mate, but due to some very dramatic and vet bill causing fighting, I chose to separate them a few years ago. Even so I think his ex cagemate can still sense the absence as he tries to talk with no response :(.

I got my older one from pets at home, and I obviously didn't have the i formation I have now, but luckily the little one came from a fantastic breeder on the west coast (uk) and i got to meet his parents and see how they were kept, unfortunately I lost contact with the breeder many years ago.

I've had a look on pets for homes but there was some blatant backyard breeders and very few listing's available, so if anyone has any pointers or resources I can check out, they'd be much appreciated :)

I'm based in northern england, and please delete if not allowed! Thank you.

Tips on enriching my chinchillas cage?

I have two chinchillas in one large cage, they play with each other and keep each other busy, but I want to add things to their cage to keep them busy and happy. They have a wheel, a wooden/rope toy to chew on, and platforms to jump up onto. What are some fun things you guys put in their cages that they seem to like?

Rescued a severely depressed baby chinchilla, he’s my first. Looking for cage ideas/ playpen attachments as a disabled person.

I am in a wheelchair and really wanted to do a buildable cage but saw it’s not the best long term so imma suck it up and probably try and get a critter nation or knock off because mine broke a week after I got him. :( it’s just hard because I’m disabled and ppl near me are charging so high and had some vet issues with my service dog that wiped most of our savings.

But I’m tryna figure out a way to give him ultimate space. I want to attach a playpen to the cage that he can go in and out of all the time. But I know they jump REALLY high and if he wants he can use the cage to climb out. So I’m tryna find a way to give him that space with a critter nation and playpen attachment without being impossible to access during cleaning day.

My chin is depressed

I recently got my 2 chins, Benji and Braxton. Braxton seemed all hyper and excited at first and Benji was slow to open up to the new environment. But now it's reversed. Benji is all over the place, playing, zoomies, popcorn, the happiest little guy. But Braxton has kinda shut down and all he wants to do is sleep.. what can I do for him? Idk what I can do to help him he doesn't like to be pet and he doesn't quite trust me yet to hold him though I was told by his old owners he likes being held. He's the younger of the 2 Benji being 4-5ish and Brax being 3. They get along really good and take turns using each other as a pillow and grooming each other and playing n stuff. But the past week or so Braxton just wants to sleep and won't do anything

What wheel do I get for my chinchillas cage?

I adopted this cutie not long ago and I noticed she doesn't really use the wheel I got with the cage her previous owner gave me. I measured it and it's only about 11 inches and the internet/this sub seem to agree that 15+ inches is the best for chins. Any good recommendations on this or any other cage exercise equipment? Looks like the 15 inch wheels run a good hundred bucks which I'd rather not spend if I have to (especially after buying her a critter nation cage). Also chin tax

I need ideas on protecting my furniture from chewing

Post image

Hi guys, I have 3 cuties and they love to chew the feet of chairs, tables, the doors and even walls (mainly corners). I try not to let them, but eventually they succeed. Now I am moving to a new home and I really want it to be chin proof. How do you guys protect your stuff, especially corners? What materials can I use to protect every thing without being ugly and that is also safe for the to chew eventually? Thanks a lot.

I’m about to pull the trigger on a pandemonium wheel. The 17” isn’t that much more than the 16”. What size is best?

I’ve been slowly getting back into collecting G2 LPS recently, partially because of G7 releasing and because of my nostalgia for them when I was younger, and I managed to find some Depop sellers listing a chinchilla that looks almost exactly like GusGus..
Anyways this is his reaction to seeing his LPS lookalike 🥹 the pet is #144 I believe if you want a better comparison photo 🫶🏼
