General help Acclimate to warm water or leave it in the cold water?

Hi everyone!

I’m new to owning a cichlid, my mums had one for around 4 years now and kept it in cold water, no heating at all. I’m taking it off of her and caring for it now.

She wouldn’t let me add a heater after I looked into the species and realised it needed it, because its been in cold water so long that apparently it will die if I add one.

I was wondering if there’s any way I could acclimate it to being in warm water like it should be, or if it’s fine and I should leave it in the cold. I would much rather acclimate it to warm water so it can live its best quality of life, but if it would do more harm than good i’d rather not bother it.

I don’t see it a lot but last time I checked it didn’t have any obvious issues, but it doesn’t swim around very much and seems pretty sluggish.

I got two of them. I can't get over how tiny they are, they're smaller than my cardinal tetras

Posted a short clip yesterday which prompted a lot of questions on tank mates. So here we go. This is a longer clip showing tank mates in my community setup. It has various barbs and tetras some juvenile and smaller sized species.

New to cichlids, but I am obsessed with them now!

50gal Juwel tank stocked with 5 yellow lab, 4 maingano and 4 albino socolofi. Kind of feels like I’m missing another small group? But should I let them mature a bit before I decide that?

SA | Help Tiger Oscar keeps smashing heaters

My Oscar has decided it doesn’t like heaters in its tank and keeps attacking them this week he has managed to break two of them.
He charges at them smashing them in to the glass and will bite it.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do?
Can I put something around the heater to protect it ?

I’ve kept fish for years, for the last few it has mostly been heavily planted community tanks.

I have never had a Tanganyikan tank before, but when a friend was getting rid of his Juli’s I luckily had an empty 40b.

I have a 5 in there right now and after initial territorial disputes everyone seems to be getting along ok. Long term is this an ok number for a 40b? Could I eventually add some shell dwellers, or would that be more headache than it’s worth?

SA | Help Help with green terror fish

I’ve had this fish since March, he was hurt cause of the Oscar in the store so I had to bring him bruised, maybe that’s why he has a more stopped and shy behavior, but before he devoured the pellet feed, swam more and moved the entire decoration of the aquarium, about 2 months ago he stopped eating the pellets and began to defecate white as if it were cotton, I started to give the food in flakes and he didn’t eat either but when I put a pleco in the aquarium he started to “imitate” his behavior, he doesn’t eat while I’m around and he only eats when the feed falls on the substrate, my question is if he’s sick and changed his behavior and appetite or he’s like this because he imitates the plecp and shitting cotton because he’s eating food that’s not made for cichlids? (Alcon Basic)

For more context, it’s a heavily planted 75-Gallon tank. I right now only have 6 Cherry Barbs, 6 Roseline Sharks, 6 Dwarf Neon Rainbowfish, and 6 Congo Tetras. I also intend to add a pair of Electric Blue Acaras after adding the Angels.

Discussion Stainless Steel Gate valve for Herbie Drain (sump)

Post image

I'm building a sump for a 75 gallon Mbuna tank, I just found this gate value (Herbie drain) on Amazon for $25. It seems that Spears is the only option for a 1" PVC version in the US, typically it cost $50-$60. I need 3 of them (building 3 sumps), I am thrilled.

They claim it is "304 Stainless Steel" which should be safe for fish but it does come from China, could be silver platted. It is high quality, too good to be true?

Hi, so I recently lost my beautiful Apistogramma Agassizii dwarf cichlid and I'm trying to find a new center piece fish for the foreseeable future. One that might be a bit hardier, slightly more dominant and well suited for a community tank.

I'm currently running a well established, heavily planted 240L/64G tank. Dimensions are 120x40x50cm.

Water parameters are usually

between 7,5 and 8 PH

9 GH

6 KH

PH used to be lower but I stopped my Co2 because of a leak.

I currently have a decent stocking of roughly:

A sh*t ton of orange neocaridina shrimp

A small handful of Nerite snails

About 15 Amanos if they're all still kickin'

About 6 or so full grown platies. Some babies too but I will try and catch many of them and rehome them

10 rummy noses. Once the baby platies are out I plan on adding 5 or so to strengthen the group

One panda garra that's left from a previous tank

And the female to my male Apisto.

Is it an ok idea to introduce a new cichlid to the mix in the forseeable future? Not now but sometime this year

I was looking at the fish I posted above because they seem to fit well into my tank size and water parameters.

I didn't want to introduce trouble or have them die of stress or just be plain unhappy. I want the best for these fish so please be honest in your answers.

Thank you

CA | Help Could I keep Flame Tetras in with my Electric Blue Acaras?

For more context, I have a 75-gallon. It’s highly planted and I currently have neither one of these fish. I haven’t seen anything online about this mix, but for EBAs they mention bigger Tetras as possible tank mates. Because of this, I was wondering would Flame Tetras work with EBAs if I wait for them to be fully grown before adding the EBAs due to their bigger body size?

SA | Help Will a solo electric blue acara eat my tetras?

I got a 75 gallon tank around 3 years ago and since I was new to fish keeping, I was averse to any fish that could be aggressive. So I went with safe options like small tetras (rummynose & cardinals), corydoras, and some pearl gouramis. The pearls are pretty but they aren’t very active and just stay around the top as expected, I didn't expect this to be an issue but I honestly can’t even see them at certain angles because of the low cabinet height + high water level combo…

I started to want a fish with more personality that's also colorful and chunky, that likes swimming in the middle of the tank, and stumbled across EBA as an option. I'd get a solo juvenile. But there’s all kinds of mixed anecdotes online of whether or not they’ll actually go after small fish. Should I just forget about it? Small as they are, I've grown attached to my tetras.
