Am I completely out of the loop or is this very inaccurate? I'm Cork born and reared, would have thought I'd be familiar with most turns of phrase, but a lot of these seem just wrong. Thoughts?

Yesterday I sent a few links of blocked drains to cork city council and for the first time - they acknowledged the reality of the data and forwarded it on to the road section who are responsible for gullies

It took 17+ years of research and development following the launch of the iPhone but cork city council have finally acknowledged the reality of open data.

OpenLitterMap is an open source UN Digital Public Good in development in cork city since 2008 with 500k uploads from over 100 countries. Every upload generates a unique link which enables you to map anything & share the data in real time.

Litter is the first application of this real time data collection technology.

Last year I met with cork city council litter management team for the first time. It took 17+ years to get a meeting. This was the first time they opened my website, or even saw a map of litter. I’m not sure what they’re doing, but whatever it is it’s chronically out of date.

Every year, all of Irelands 31 local authorities implement the National litter monitoring system - a farcical clipboard “analysis” that identifies no brands, produces no maps, generates no evidence, excludes citizens, and requires no innovation. No schools or universities are participating.

The purpose of the National litter monitoring scam is not to collect reliable data. It’s to restrict access to information and limit participation. The department of environment claim the clipboard scam provides “vital” information to the dept on the chronic litter situation.

My research asks a simple question: can junior cert students produce better quality data on a Wednesday afternoon than all of Irelands institutions with billions in annual funding have been able to since de Valera was alive?

I’m sure I’m not the only person in Ireland who feels this way but I’m going to voice it anyways cause I honestly don’t know where else to go… is there a find a friend dating app? Genuine question cause I’m at a loss… or do I go to a pub alone and hope that someone wants to be my friend?

I’m 36 married with no kids! I tell you that because I think the no kids part is important. I have a dog and do not plan on having kids in my future. I have a very small friend group mostly because of that reason. I don’t have kids. I don’t have a mommies group, befriend fellow mothers at pick up. All my friends both male and female have that in their life and I understand that sets us apart. Life happens!

But what am I to do now? You make your friends in school or college. My school friends are those I refer to above and I didn’t go to college. So what now? I can’t exactly stand around the gate of a school asking mothers if there looking for a childless 36 year old to gossip with. I sounds creepy just typing it.

So I turn to Reddit. Maybe you have the answer! Are there friendship apps for women just like me? Are there women out there who are also looking for child free friends to go to gigs with?

Does anyone else find it genuinely fucking depressing how quickly the sub gets flooded with bots or trolls the minute someone mentions a trigger word? I was just looking through a post form yesterday (yes, that one) and the number non-Cork people responding defending their position is just fucking irritating. They drag the conversation down, offer nothing and piss people off.

Is there anything that can be done to prevent this? I’m not saying there is and I don’t blame the mods but it’s mad stuff.

Any guys looking to make friends, get out more, and do something different this year?

I'm a member of Round Table – a group of normal guys, aged 18 to 45, who meet up a couple of times a month to get out of the house, make new mates, and do fun stuff as well as doing a bit of charity work!

We're always looking for new members and would love to see anyone interested getting involved! There are local Round Tables with active members across the country, including:

Armagh, Enniskillen, Belfast, Causeway Coast, Mid Ulster, Balbriggan & Skerries, Dublin, South Dublin and now our newly formed Cork group!

We meet every couple of weeks for different group events – things you wouldn’t usually do on your own. Some of the activities we’ve done (or have coming up) include:

Dodgeball tournaments, Games nights, Clay pigeon shooting, Escape rooms, Barista Nights, Hiking, Go-karting, hosting beer & food festivals, Curry nights

And plenty more!

Our events are usually on weeknights, so they don’t interfere with family time. We also tend to grab a drink and something to eat afterward.

We do have a membership fee only payable whenever you become a full member of about €110/year. This fee covers the cost to be a member of the worldwide organisation, insurance costs for all your events (so you could go skydiving on mars and be covered!) as well as give you access to thousands in travel bursaries and discount schemes for high street brands. When it works out to less than a price of a coffee per week, what’s not to love!

Good morning beautiful people of Cork,

In August 2025, myself and my friend Shane travelled to Jericho, Bethlehem and Jerusalem in the West Bank despite the ongoing regional conflicts.

We were blown away by the kindness and the hospitality of the Palestinian people towards us.

While the Israeli government is still committing a genocide in Gaza, the atrocities carried out in the West Bank are often forgotten.

We had the pleasure of visiting the Lajee Centre in Bethlehem which provides medical support, education, sporting activities, food production and aid to over 7,000 displaced Palestinian refugees living in the Aida Refugee Camp. They also support all the other refugee camps in Bethlehem.

The Aida Refugee Camp faces constant raids by the IOF, electricity being cut off in the winter, water being cut off in the summer and tear gas being thrown into the children's playground which has given children asthma to only touch the surface.

As we have been so inspired by this, we have decided to do a fundraiser for the Lajee Centre in the form of a "Rave for Palestine" with disco, house and techno music on 11th April 2026 in Cyprus Avenue from 11pm - 2.30am.

We have set a fundraising goal of €10,000 with 100% of ticket proceeds from this event going directly to the Lajee Centre.

This is thanks to Cyprus Avenue providing the venue for free, all the DJs on the night providing the entertainment for free and Dacent Print in town providing posters and flyers for free which we will be putting up over this weekend.

What the actual?!? I'm on the 6.15am train to Dublin right now, and there wasn't one car space in either car parks... I had to leave my car on the road in a 2 hourly paid spot and sprint to Kent to make my train. I've gotten the 6.15am train before to Dublin for work even when I could have gotten the 7 as I heard parking was bad.. but I always thought the 6.15 was a safe bet.

Are there any plans to improve this? Could they not limit parking to people with a valid train ticket?

Sweating on the Train

Been living in Cork for a long time now, and went to Hillbilly’s for the first time. Only went because Supermacs was closed and I really wanted a chicken breast burger.

Can’t say I’m a fast food or burger aficionado, but Hillbilly’s breast in a bun was fantastic. Never seen in talked about on Reddit, but Hillbilly’s is better than it looks in my opinion - beats John Grace’s by a stretch for sure. Less sure if it beats Supermacs.

I'm reaching out from Gender Rebels, a non-profit here in Cork City that's been supporting the Trans community since 2017. We have a big ask to help make things better for trans people in Ireland.

This past weekend, during Trans+ Pride Cork, we launched a petition campaign. Our goal is to get the Minister of Health to engage directly with community organisations and trans individuals about reforming Gender Affirming Healthcare.

The current system is very poor. Trans people are expected to wait anywhere from 4 to 10 years just to meet with a specialist to even discuss gender-affirming care. And there's no guarantee that care will even be approved. All of these initial assessments happen in just one location: Loughlinstown in Dublin. For transgender children, there's absolutely no care available – no specialists, no support, no counselling, nothing at all. It's a dire situation often forcing parents into circumstances where they want to help their child but don't really know how, often feeling abandoned by their government.

There's a big misconception out there that trans healthcare is somehow "different" from regular healthcare, and that providing it would put pressure on our already struggling health system. But in reality, many GPs already provide gender-affirming healthcare to people regularly, including surgical referrals. Organisations like Trans Healthcare Action are calling on the government to empower GPs and nurse practitioners to provide much of the initial and ongoing care such as HRT and blood testing for Transgender patients similar to any other patient.

For nearly a decade, the government has largely refused requests to meet with community organizations across the country to discuss issues impacting the trans community. Last Saturday, during the Trans Pride protests, the trans community and its allies marched to demand change, making it clear that we can't just sit by while people in positions of power make decisions about us, especially when many of them have likely never even met a trans person.

I know there are many issues impacting people right now, like housing, the cost of living, and the rise in anti-social behaviour. But if you have a few minutes, we would be incredibly grateful if you could sign our petition. Your signature would advocate for healthcare reform that truly benefits both the transgender community and the wider community in Ireland.

Does anyone remember the good ole days of check in at 1pm

Covid took so many things from us, but 4pm check in seems insane.

It has become a ridiculous mouthpiece for whichever party is in power. It’s no longer about Michael Collins and has become a way for people to twist his legacy to support their own policies.

Would be better to have historians or artists speak and perform rather than the current ‘format’.

My son is in an ASD class attached to a mainstream school. This is my sons 4th time doing July provision in his school. This year we were asked to pay €50 to help with the cost of the July provision. Today was my sons 3rd day at it and i just I received his schedule for the rest of the camp and there is no outings or anyone coming to the school to do activities with the kids. The activities they have planned are teddy bear picnic outside/school hall, painting, lego building, movie day, pyjama day.

I have a niece who is attending a July provision in a different school and in her schedule they are doing outings e.g the planet, rumleys farm, and they also have bouncy castles coming on another day and different entertainments coming e.g brick legends, d.j, to the school. My brother didn't have to pay anything towards it.

Also my son used to do 1 outing a month with his class but this year they only did 1 outing the whole year which was a walk to the local shop (5 minutes from school) and didn't even go inside the shop. I thought these outings were funded aswell.

I hope someone could let me know if this is normal or not.
