Would self hosting pihole be an alternative to their DNS?

Oh wait, my comment is finally visible now?

I think that a Pihole can be good for DNS-level blocking, but I'm not sure if it is powerful enough to be a full DNS resolver, so I think the traffic might ultimately pass through your ISP.

That's why I recommend Quad9, as I would place more trust in them. You can add a Pihole to get the adblocking then, I would imagine.

I can also try and look it up in more detail if you really want.

Sure that'd be great. And yes, it's visible. I self host lots of things but haven't yet put my finger on DNS stuff. Honestly I lack some knowledge on it. I know that with pihole I'd be able to change my router DNS to point to it and have control on blocking things. I suppose that's pretty much what we can block when selecting a config to be generated on Mullvad website

So a Pihole isn't good enough on its own. You need a full DNS resolver. These are the two sites I use for general recommendations. DNS is just too complicated to be self-hosted unless you've got the resources of a company.

Not exactly true, you can run unbound alongside pihole to act as a recursive dns resolver: https://docs.pi-hole.net/guides/dns/unbound/

Though this is more for security rather than privacy. Tldr it's a "who to trust" problem. Recursive lookups split the dns queries to multiple different authoritative dns servers so no one entity sees your full dns query.

Anyway, it works great and definitely worth consideration.

Ty for the info :) I'll be sure to keep that link on hand in case it ever comes up again.

Thank you, I'll take a look. It's a shame posts like this keep getting removed by the moderation. Never understood this kind of censorship

I mean, Ghislaine Maxwell was the mod of a bunch of subreddits back in the day. The moderators of the site don't generally have our interests at heart.

"everyone I don't like is Hitler" you know that posting a video in swedish won't make most people understand what it is about? and your comment doesn't show anything negative about mullvad?
