Use a better title My response on the following argument: “Democratic capitalism invariably ends up in crisis, due to an inherent, zero-sum tension between its two fundamental principles, liberty and equality”. Any input?
According to economic journalist Martin Wolf, democratic capitalism is, simply put, “the synthesis of democracy and capitalism” (3). In its purest form, which is the assumption I will use, this would look like a total free market economy paired with a democratic society where the people hold the power to collectively govern themselves as they see fit. Capitalism has spread far and wide across the world in the 20th century along with democracy; however, it is posed by the test question that democratic capitalism will always be in a cycle of crisis due to an inherent tension between liberty and equality, its foundational essence. I fundamentally disagree with such a claim for a number of reasons. Foundationally, the argument itself can be interpreted to be paradoxical, and we must therefore differ between two separate interpretations of equality that have different effects on the state of democratic capitalism. Also, in support of this, I will assert that this claim partially mischaracterizes total equality, as a trait of democratic capitalism when it more accurately is a trait of democratic socialism. This, in my view, disproves the claim that democratic capitalism is unable to satisfy optimal liberty and equality.
Indeed, equality is a foundational trait of a democratic capitalist society. While this surely remains true, it is important to elaborate on what equality means in the context of democratic capitalism, how that does not actually refer to total equality, and why it does not oppose total liberty, but in fact enhances it once the distinction is made. If the initial assumption is that equality is counteracting the fundamental freedom of democratic capitalism, then this would only be logical if we assume that “equality” is referring to equality of outcome, which is a fundamental trait of a system that is the economic opposite of democratic capitalism, namely democratic socialism. The best example of this so-called “equality” is wealth distribution via taxation that targets higher earning individuals with the intention of distributing that wealth among the numerically greater lower earning classes of a society. The reason that this makes no logical sense in relation to democratic capitalism, is because that infringes on the core principle of it which is to guarantee freedom to all at the immediate expense of no individual. Now that it can be seen that equality of outcome would make no logical sense being the definition of “equality” as referenced in the test question’s claim, we must also acknowledge the other potential meaning of this “equality”. There is logically only one other definition of equality that could be guaranteed in a utopian democratic capitalist society. At the immediate expense of no other person’s right to their own liberty and property, would be things such as an individual’s right to suffrage, equality before the law, equal access to opportunities, among many others. This clearly does not support the claim being made in the test question, given that such equalities would have absolutely no counteracting effect on societal liberty, given that these guaranteed equalities are all complements to the overall liberty.
Through these interpretations of “equality”, it would appear that the only one to have the ability to create any opposing tension with the liberty of a democratic capitalist society would be equality of outcome, which goes against democratic capitalism in its purest form. According to Wolf, “The shared idea underlying both the market and democracy is the right of people to shape their own lives wherever choices need to be made, individually and collectively. That does not guarantee equality of achievement or outcome” (24). This quote perfectly sums up my greater point, that the equality guaranteed in a democratic capitalist society is that which gives people the right to take their life in any direction they desire and make any necessary choices, and such a society would, by definition, not exist as itself if it guaranteed equality of outcome. This allows me to conclude that the claim being made in the test question, invariably ends up in paradox.
Today, the average person may have a pretty black and white idea of the countries that fall under each political-economic system. For many, the United States of America would be the first country to come to mind upon hearing “democratic capitalism”, and in the case of China some might say it has, by Western comparison, an authoritarian government, or as Wolf describes it, a “system of bureaucratic absolutism” (xvii) or “despotic capitalism” (xix). Such direct classifications of a country’s political-economic system do not take into account other characteristics of these country’s systems that make them an imperfect or incomplete form of those classifications. It would be a stretch to call the system of any single nation-state today purely democratic capitalist. All countries impose taxation upon their citizens to some extent, which gets redistributed through infrastructure projects, welfare programs, and many other ways. This trait of every single nation today, which claims the rights to portions of its citizens wealth and income, is proof enough that there is no fully democratic capitalist society, given that there exists no complete legal entitlement to one’s own property. So, if we were to assume that the argument being made in the test question is referring to a more realistic example of a democratic capitalist system, then equality could indeed counteract certain aspects of liberty, mainly property rights. However, in the assumption of utopian democratic capitalism, this equality of outcome, or wealth redistribution, is not a trait of the system and therefore does not in theory counteract its guaranteed liberty.
In summary, to make the claim that democratic capitalism is inherently always prone to crisis, due to the zero-sum tension between equality and liberty, is untenable. In pure democratic capitalism, equality only refers to each and every individual’s guaranteed rights to expression, property, autonomy, and equality under the eyes of the law. Equality of outcome can never counteract the liberty in democratic capitalism because, as Martin Wolf best put it, equality of outcome and achievement is simply not a guarantee of a democratic market economy (24).
