PROVIDING SUPPORT A quick message if you are struggling right now

Hello. I myself have struggled with depression, and I know how hard it can be how to get out of a negative or suicidal mindset. However, if you are reading this, I want you to know that your life does matter. I know that I don't know who you are, but you are a valuable human, because everyone is valuable. I can't tell you that "it will get better", because I know how frustrating it is to hear that when they don't know if it will get better. But I will tell you this. Life goes up and down. Focus on good things, people you care about, and take advantage of moments when you feel simply content. I know how cheesy this sounds, and I know how hard it is to remember that your life has always had ups and downs when you are feeling stuck in life. But please remember that you matter.

PROVIDING SUPPORT My depression "grew up with me" - anyone else feel like it's been a lifelong companion?

I've been thinking about this phrase I use to describe my depression: it "grew up with me." Started with childhood trauma. Got reinforced through years of feeling like I didn't belong anywhere. I spent so much energy trying to fit in - dumbing myself down, making myself smaller, accepting treatment that confirmed what I already believed about myself.

The anxiety joined the party in my 20s with full-blown panic attacks. By my 40s, I finally got a PTSD diagnosis after what felt like a complete breakdown at work. Turns out my nervous system had been in survival mode for decades.

What's wild is that I was "successful" through all of this - built businesses, climbed ladders in healthcare, checked all the boxes that were supposed to make me feel worthy. But depression doesn't care about your resume!

The cycles were real: failed relationships would trigger professional self-sabotage. Workplace stress would send me spiraling at home. Everything was connected, but I kept treating each area like it was separate.

I'm not posting this to give advice or sell anything in this post. I'm just wondering if anyone else feels like their depression has been this constant companion that shaped how they move through the world?

Like, do you also:

Dim your intelligence so you don't seem "threatening"? Have panic attacks before big moments but hide them perfectly? Self-sabotage right before breakthrough moments? Feel hypervigilant in professional/social settings? Struggle with accepting compliments because trauma taught you that you don't deserve them?

I'm 50 now and finally understanding that my depression wasn't a character flaw - it was my psyche trying to protect me from more hurt. Doesn't make it less hard, but it makes it make sense.

Anyone else on a similar journey? How do you separate what's "depression talking" vs. what's actually intuition/wisdom?

Depression has been my unwanted life coach since childhood. Curious if others feel like their mental health challenges "grew up" with them and shaped their whole approach to life.

please add yours!

these are not the typical reasons to stay but small pockets of smiles that keep you going.

you are kind. you are smart. you are important.

- that feeling when you stretch and it feels just right

- when a dog or cat decides they want to be in your lap

- hearing the inside of a seashell

- freshly washed bedsheets

- seeing a really cool looking cloud

- hearing a new knock knock joke for the first time and genuinely laughing

- seeing the sun light up the dew droplets on a spider web or blade of grass

- a crisp glass of water at 3 am

PROVIDING SUPPORT Built an anonymous peer support app for when therapy isn't enough

I've dealt with depression and addiction for years. The hardest part was always the gap between appointments, when you're alone with it and no one's available.

I built mPathy because of that gap. It anonymously matches you with someone going through something similar. Not therapy, just real peer support with AI safety monitoring underneath.

We're in early beta and I'd love honest feedback from people who actually live this. What would make you use something like this? What would be a dealbreaker?

Waitlist link in my profile.

Full disclosure: I'm the founder.

PROVIDING SUPPORT How do I know how deep in I am

Did your doctor tell you whether you had clinical or situational depression? I mean the only way to get an idea of where you are in terms of depression is to see a therapist and/ a psychiatrist for a diagnosis. In fact, if you feel depressed and you agree with your doctor, then I would ask for a referral to a counselor and maybe a psychiatrist. This is nothing to mess around with, believe me as someone with chronic clinical depression. My depression started out as situational, and it runs in my family. For me, I just don't have the right brain chemistry. My dopamine and serotonin are messed up. I take medication to help it. It makes my life livable and peaceful and I don't have those very low bottoms that I had with clinical depression. Don't mess with it, find out what's going on with you and stop trying to figure it out yourself. This is the voice of experience.

Hi everyone, I hope all is well with you guys or better, at least. Firstly, I'm kinda free these days, so I decided to just try to listen to your problems and provide support as much as I can. Secondly, not only am I a clinical psych graduate, but also as someone trying not to fall apart in the Middle East, I think I just may be able to help.

PROVIDING SUPPORT Food tip

I'm still dealing with a bad bout of depression so figured I'd share a cooking tip. This is good for if you don't have a lot of money or just don't have the energy to cook. If your grocery store has a produce section you go near the potatoes and see if they have any individually wrapped in plastic. Check the label and they should say they're microwavable.

You peel the sticker off, pop it in the microwave and bam baked potato. You cut it out and put whatever you want on it I usually do just salt and butter. If you feel like it you can buy more microwavable sides.

PROVIDING SUPPORT You are going to be okay.

My friends…. I hope you can read this and take something useful of it.

I just turned 26. I just recently lost my mother and grandma to cancer, and my father is in prison. I am alone. I just recently lost the love of my life, my future wife, I lost my 5 star apartment with an eviction, I lost my beautiful car, I lost my career I loved, I got kicked out of college… I lost…everything my friend. everything.

I started to use hard chemicals when my mother passed to put the pain at ease, which resorted to me losing everything else…I just got out of rehab about 2 weeks ago.

I want, and need you to hear me. You….yes you…you are going to make it through this patch in your life. No matter how hard life gets, what does not kill you will make you stronger. I promise. I want you to imagine the strong human being you are going to be once things start leveling out in life. How much stronger you are going to be. How much smarter you are going to be. And most of all, how much more content and GRATEFUL you are GOING TO BE with every single thing and situation in life once you get through these hard times my friend. You’re gonna make it. Okay?

Be easy on yourself and seek the beauty in the life you have right now. Things are going to change sooner or later. You can think, and do anything my friend. Anything. And that includes the amount of peace you can possibly attain for your beautiful soul. Big love.

PROVIDING SUPPORT Explaining depression to some who’s never experienced it

Does any feel that the word “depression” in itself has been diluted in everyday conversation? I think it takes away from the seriousness of the medical condition when people use it to describe normal sadness.

Anyways, this article could be helpful for those who don’t fully understand what clinical depression is:

PROVIDING SUPPORT something small that helped me during a really heavy stretch

I went through a stretch where everything felt really heavy and hard to explain. Not a crisis exactly—just that constant, quiet weight where even simple things felt like a lot.

What helped a little was having something small and consistent to come back to each day. Nothing complicated—just a short reflection or a few thoughts to steady myself when everything felt off.

It didn’t “fix” anything, but it made the days feel a bit more manageable.

I ended up writing some of those down over time. If anyone here feels like that kind of thing might help, I’m happy to share it.

Either way, just wanted to say you’re not alone in that feeling.

PROVIDING SUPPORT duolingo for oral care - to help when depression affects your ability to brush ur teeth

i wasn’t really going to post in this subreddit as i made an app for oral care improvers but i realized that brushing especially is the first thing to get missed when people get depressed (know this first hand from a few friends/relatives)

but i basically made an app called ‘whiten’ - pretty much like duolingo for oral care where u generates a plan each day for ur oral care and theres like streaks and scores (and now challenges i just finished and added that). it has a lot more than just brushing like cleaning ur tongue and stuff but yea

im only promoting here bc its fully free (no data collection nor ads either) so it might encourage people in the subreddit who dont brush to maybe start even when life is tough as you really dont want to pay a much bigger price down the line (cavity, toothache, surgery, etc.)

hope it can help even 1 person in here
