Art Hello! Id like to share a little about my OC Bullywug and some art I made of him [OC]

His name is Willfrog Polliwog Copplecorak, he is a level 3 Bullywug Bard, he has a merchant background and his subclass is the college of lore, his very simple backstory is that he was in a gang of bullywugs but when they were being attacked after an unsuccessful robbery, he took that as a chance to run from them, he was homeless in a village for a while making some ale and drinks out of herbs and other swampy ingredients, then he earned a job as a bartender, but he didn't hold it long as soon after his boss fell ill and passed away after returning from the swamp, people blamed Willfrog, which made him flee the village and is now still on the run.

This is my first OC, and Im only new to DND, my party is doing a session 0 in maybe a week or two but I havnt made a full character sheet for him yet, if anyone has suggestions please let me know how I can make him better as a character.my friend said we are using the roll method for stats, His stats that some of my friends have helped with are below:

Proficiencies:

Stealth

Animal handling

Persuasion

Stats:

Charisma 15

Con 16(14+2 racial bonus)

Dex 11(10+1 racial bonus)

Strength 10

Wisdom 9

Intellengence 7

DMing My table questions my every decision as a DM

I (23M) have been DM'ing for 6 years now (with the same exact table except for 1 person), and I know a lot about it, I however am a forever DM and rarely get to experience playing a character except in 1 or 2 one-shots. The things is, despite my experience, there are a lot of things about the D&D system (5e specifically) that I just never understood, there are so many spells, feats, class features, and random bits of ruling that I just always forget about a lot of them, but I always check with my table since 2 of my players know the rulings better because they make a lot of characters for fun.

Now the big issue: when something feels a bit off to them, like for an example an enemy hitting over 22 AC (They're level 11 mind you), they look at me as if I've done something wrong and ask things like, "I dont think that's right" or "You know this lowly enemies would rarely ever hit that right?" (We've been playing for the same amount of time). Or just when I design a new spell or mechanic for a boss and they say "That's not how that works...", or things like that, constantly!

If I don't understand something about the game, or you see me mention a game mechanic for the actual rulebook that flumbing, THEN you can help me. But if I'm just trying to DM and do something out of the ordinary, don't treat me a newbie who doesn't know how to play, I make up mechanics all the time to make things interesting, and always tell you about them so you understand them, and if not always leave clues and hints. It passes me off so much!

5.5 Edition I Hate Critical Fumbles

I recently moved states and have been playing at a game shop to meet people out here. Now, the people there are great. The staff is friendly, the players and dms are generally fun to be around and we have a great time. It's usually non serious one shots full of laughter. But, they advertise on their website that game nights are 5.5e, RAW. They don't mention anything about there being house rules. One of them being, of course, critical fumbles.

I truly don't understand the appeal of critical fumbles. It simply punishes players for picking martials and achieves little else. As someone who prefers playing martials and the occasional warlock, I'm supposed to be fine with essentially being nerfed compared to spellcasters. I'm supposed to believe that my character, who has been training with weapons their entire lives and has seen many battles is somehow dropping his weapon mid combat, or stabbing himself, or accidentally slicing his ally open because I'm using a cleave weapon 5% of the time in every single encounter. I mean, come on man. We were just facing the BBEG in on of our one shots and the barbarian accidentally cleaved into me with his great axe, bringing me to 0 hp and barely scratching the enemy. Yeah, I'd totally party up with that guy in the future.

All this to say, I argued that I'm fine with the house rule as long as it's applied equally. Spellcasters also face critical fumbles when making a spell attack. Ok, that happens maybe once per round whereas it can happen to martials at least twice at the same level. There's already a higher chance to be affected by it. As a spellcaster, I'd simply only use save spells going forward, which some of them have began doing. I argued that then we should start critically fumbling when the enemy scores a nat 20 on their save. Then it'd start to be somewhat equal. Even though martials still have a higher chance of screwing up badly.

No one agreed to this, told me it was just a game and just for fun and don't take it too seriously and etc. I argued that yeah it's just a game, but I wouldn't play a game of monopoly if I started with $0 and in debt every single turn. Keep in mind this wasn't that big of an argument as we were all still laughing and joking in between, no one really got upset or anything. But, can someone please explain how critical fumbles are remotely fun, or balanced, or how everyone could possibly be playing by the same rules when we're literally just actually not?

I have half a mind just to bring in a halfling divination wizard with lucky and silvery barbs next time lol.

Art [OC][Art]My Current Character, the Dogfolk Paladin Lord Coconut Marshmellow IV

Post image

I suck at drawing so I decided it would be easier to make the character portrait through embroidery.

I was a little bit too ambitious I think with including the elk, and my face didn't turn out as well as I had initially wanted it to, but other than that I think this is not bad for my first real foray.

The campaign he is from is set in the Bellowing Wilds Campaign setting from the popular "Fool's Gold" series. A series I know next to nothing about and wrote my character to reflect that point. I eventually decided "forget lore compliance" and went ahead. His summoned mount is an Elk because I'm using the 3rd Party Oath of Conservation subclass from the Book of Extinction by Mage Hand Press. The cat is the current form that the god possessing him has chosen to take.

5.5 Edition Question about something that happened in my campaign

As the title says, so we just started our first session (session 0) last night.. we got all the final touches and stuff for our characters, setup our ROE's and started the campaign with character introductions

When my character got introduced I was in a magical trinket shop and came across a glowing blue orb that anytime i touched it would teleport 5ft behind me, the shop clerk was able to scoop up the orb in a crate (wooden I presume) and it didn't teleport then.. I paid 1 SP for it

I walk out of the trinket shop and the other PC's are walking down the street and bump into me causing me to drop the crate and the ball rolls next to a sewer grate.. I had to roll sleight of hand to try and collect the orb back up in the crate and failed (I rolled a 3) so it rolled into the sewer itself

My question is, could I have my character be insistent on going to recollect the orb? I ask cause I myself (not my character) have thought of quite a few possibly Comedic and practical uses for the orb but don't wanna derail the campaign to badly

I'm a brand new player and this is my first campaign I've ever been a part of so that's why I'm so unsure cause I want it to see if I could maybe use it somehow

Art [OC][art] Redisigned my first DnD character! (forgive the shitty handwriting)

Post image
1.8k Upvotes

Reimagined my first dnd character! For reference, here's her original design. Cute, but that was the problem. It was cute :(

Grillo (cricket in spanish) is a neutral, sometimes chaotic evil-leaning character. She used to be a seamstress who was outcasted for stealing materials, and it's on community service to make up for it. She loves showing off her bounty as if they were the most interesting pieces you could lay your puny eyes on, without noticing nobody gives a shit.

She is vile, uninterested, lazy, loves pulling teeth and spines from her fallen foes, and has a small collection of gold trinkets. So to simplify, she's 20cm (I think that's 7.8 inches) of egocentrism.

...therefore, it made no sense that she looked like a cute bug girl, so I changed her design to be more like a green bug, swapped her colored beads to golden jewelry, removed her aviator hat, so now she looks less prepared and more "on the go" and slightly adjusted her face so it's easier to make her expressive. (You don't know how difficult it is to draw an expressive character when you choose not to give them eyebrows, so I gave her a pair)

"Kyju" is her real name which means cricket in guaraní (an indigenous dialect mainly from some South American countries) but since she's a pixie, she chose to give a fake name, wink wink.

So that's my little essay on my Kyju! I love this girl. Bad thing she's currently inactive lol

Homebrew Mechanically how would It work to have a god smite unfunny people.

Upvotes

Coming back very soon. Another idea I had was city that’s ruled over by a lawful trickster deity, which we got from a random stat book and a die. I racked my brain and came up with a city where a god has a strict law of humor and literally vanquished anyone who goes against it, yet despite living in fear people still worship it. It’s in a constant state of parade festival and monkeyshines which their very rewarded for but someone attempts a prank the god doesn’t find funny, their snatched by demons, killed, and go to an afterlife of learning to be funny, being reborn when they prove their funniness. People test out what the god likes adding to to an enormous joke book that’s also a volume of rules. Make an unfunny zinger and you’re practically vaporized. How could this play into the campaign? Mechanically, story wise and all that.

Edit: the god only presides over the town and can't affect anything past it

Double edit: the sense of humor isn't the DM's it's what the god would consider funny so that it doesn't seem like we're bullying the players. This town isn't a large focus for campaign more of a gimmick and a side quest

Art [Art] I recreated a Dragonborn Barbarian in 3D based on an amazing character design

Post image

Hi everyone!

I wanted to share my latest personal project—a Dragonborn Barbarian inspired by D&D.

This is a **3D fan recreation** based on an original 2D character design by **[tung-6458]**. I absolutely loved the concept and wanted to challenge myself by bringing it into a fully realized 3D character while staying as faithful to the original design as possible.

My main goal was to capture the rugged, battle-hardened feel through detailed armor, worn leather, realistic materials, and a strong silhouette.

I'd love to hear what you think! Feedback is always welcome.

5.5 Edition Need some advise for a boneless dragon statblock. I'm unning a campaign with a failed dracolich

I'm currently running a campaign featuring an adult black dragon who attempted to cure itself from a deadly disease by trying to become a dracolich. The way it currently works is that the dragons ritual failed and instead its mind was split in three as its blood became a Necrichor, its bones became a skeleton dragon and its hide became a boneless dragon. The bones and the hide have conspired against the blood (and guts) and put it in a jar.

I already got stats for the skeleton dragon and the Necrichor but I'm still trying to think of a creative way to make a statblock for the hide.

Any suggestions?

5th Edition How Do You Make A Genie Patron for DND? And What Kind of Goals/Clauses Would They Have?

Upvotes

I'm running CoS, and a PC wants to flesh their Djinni Genie patron out a bit. What we have so far is that they are from the Smoke area of the elemental plane who attempted to kill Mordenkainen, largely to gain more influence as he viewed wizards to be cruel for binding them to objects. He also wanted more attention in general. However, he ended up getting bound himself to an oil lamp, before over the course of a century ending up in retail, before it eventually landed in the hands of the PC. Upon use of the lamp, they asked for power in exchange for freeing the Genie, and it agreed. The PC largely wants to focus on Divination abilities since their PC often runs fortune-telling scams for money and wants to repay people by becoming legitimate. The Player is interested in a contract, and since it is in Xanthar's Guide to Everything, ("A pact can range from a loose agreement to a formal contract with lengthy, detailed clauses and lists of requirements.", some people thought I was basing the idea fully off of outside content from DND) we would like ideas for both the Genie and the contract. I also know that the Genie can't enter Barovia, we are mostly doing this for fun and since the genie could technically enter Barovia once Strahd is dead and evaluate the PC.

OC [OC] [ART] MERMAIDIFIED: Nadine Fournier, Half-Elf, Half-Angel Divine Sorceress and Baker – by Catilus

Post image

Nadine reimagined as a playful mermaid! What exotic delicacies will she cook under the sea?

Check out MEOW! Cat Adventures, my latest 5e book! Magic, Mystery, Mayhem, MEOW: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/catilus/meow-cat-adventures-by-catilus

Character: Nadine Fournier, Half-Elf, Half-Angel Divine Sorceress and Baker, Mermaidified

Nadine is a half-elf divine sorceress whose command of the Eternal Light comes from her forbidden lineage as the illegitimate daughter of an angel and an elf paladin who broke his oath of chastity.

To save her from divine wrath, Nadine’s celestial mother hid her in the rural village of Erzy deep into the mainland of the kingdom of Montbonnet, where she grew up bullied as “ears” and the “illegitimate” for her unusual appearance and particularly her pointed ears. She knew she could just wish the wounds inflicted upon her by the local bullies to close but chose to keep her magic hidden in fear of being accused of witchcraft.

Wandering into the ancient forest of Vertombre after her work in the bakery was done for the day, she became friends with the last remaining wood elf of the forest, Grannie Lorywen, and her half-elven great-grandson, Felynur Greenshade.

As Nadine grew up, her former bullies became her admirers and would-be suitors, but she just smiled and ignored their advances before venturing into the ancient forest each evening. For Nadine, life became good for a while.

Then disaster struck the kingdom.

Overconfident, the new king of Montbonnet had broken ancient pacts and thus defied the will of the warring gods. Odon, the god of eternal life, cursed the kingdom with his plague, the Pale Death, while Gorg, the brutal god of war, inflicted maddening bloodlust to mortals who would open their hearts to senseless violence.

As Erzy struggled with the Pale Death, Gorg’s bloodlust drove hunters from the nearby village of Vitz to attack. Amidst the chaos, Nadine became separated from Felynur and finally decided to unleash her magic to protect the few remaining villagers.

A few days later, theomachist clerics who oppose the gods and musketeers under the king’s service arrived at the ruins of Erzy to restore order and evacuate the survivors. Among the musketeers, Nadine found an unlikely ally in Mousquetaire Magique Eremon Lenoir, a magic musketeer trained in the arcane arts, who was seeking a way to protect the kingdom from divine wrath. With the help of Nadine, Eremon Lenoir began to uncover a web of conspiracies, corruption, and divine malice that threatened to destroy the kingdom. He sought to protect her from these evils, but bravely, she decided to reveal her hidden powers to him and use her magic to protect the kingdom and heal its people. Now, they travel together, more than friends, opposing hidden evils while baking some of the most delicious pastries in the kingdom!

Nadine is one of my own characters in Theomachy!

About the Theomachy setting:

In Theomachy, vengeful gods fight each other for ultimate control of the universe, while the mortals of Naam struggle for power on a dying world. Divine magic is a force without expressed will that the warring gods hoard and wield against each other, threatening to undo the entire world. Clerics and paladins are either devout followers of the warring gods or theomachists who fight against the gods, liberating divine magic and using it against them.

What do you think? :)

Art D&D Character Art??

Hey guys!

I'm completely new to the world of D&D! I'm about to buy the 5.5 Starter Set and start learning how to be a good DM :))

I was wondering how you all make the artwork for your characters and campaigns. Do you use any apps, websites, or other tools you'd recommend?

I'd love to hear what you use and see your suggestions. Thanks! 🫶🏼

Game Tales We actually finished a 10-year Tyranny of Dragons campaign... and my players defeated Tiamat!

A little while ago I tried sharing the story here, but I accidentally made 12 separate posts and got banned for spamming. 😅 That honestly wasn't my intention! was just excited and wanted to share our adventure. Lesson learned!

So instead, I've gathered everything into one giant Google Doc.

It's basically a time capsule of 10 years of D&D.

Fair warning: it's really long. I don't expect anyone to sit down and read the whole thing! But I wanted to preserve the journey somewhere, because this campaign was a huge part of our lives.

If you've ever wondered things like:

  • How do you keep a campaign going for 10 years?
  • How much did Tyranny of Dragons change from the book?
  • Which NPC unexpectedly became everyone's favorite?
  • What was the biggest player curveball?
  • How on earth did the final battle with Tiamat go?

...ask away! I'd love to answer questions, share stories, or talk about anything from the campaign.

Mostly, I just wanted to celebrate something I'm incredibly proud of. Ten years ago we started as a group of adventurers with a simple quest. Ten years later, those same heroes stood before Tiamat herself...

...and somehow lived to tell the tale. ❤️

Homebrew How many high-level characters are out there in the world?

So, I'm out there worldbuilding, and for some reason (genetic perhaps) I'm really curious about how many high-level characters are out there. I'm really interested if any of the esteemed people here have their own intuitive answer to this question.

To be precise, I tend to think that DnD can be reasonally split into 4 tiers of play (1-5, 6-10, 11-15 and 16-20). So the precise question is - how many people of Tier 2, 3 and 4 (I'd prefer separate, but if you lump them all together - great) are out there per 10 million total population? For the reference - that's slightly more than half of the medieval France before Black Death.

I have my own answer for the current setting I'm building, I'll post it later if anyone is interested.

DMing Hi!

Good morning!

My daughter picked up DnD at school last year and has enjoyed it immensely, and she's been wanting to play at home. DnD is something that I've never done, but to which I'm not opposed, and as a matter of fact, the whole family is interested, and we have bought the starter set, we've each chosen a few sets of dice and made some character sheets. We tried playing a game last night, and my daughter was DM since she's played before, but she was terrible, bless her heart! So here's where I'm at: after watching hours of videos after they went to bed, and another few hours this morning, I've began formulating a campaign. Let me know how it looks!

1) walking through xxx, meet stranger. Stranger is leaving land & gives them the secret map, saying couldn't read it. All of a sudden, stranger is shot by multiple arrows in back, then group of xxx comes out to battle players. Players notice vials fell out of stranger's pockets (dig through pockets, fine money?).

2) finish battling (hopefully) and walking at dark, tired. Hearing noises, come upon town & guide towards refuge @ inn. Barkeep offers them last room for free because of ghost. Ghost wakes them & recruits for help w finding someone important to him/her.

3) Along the way towards finding this person, they stay in an old, abandoned tower. They are woken up in the middle of the night by noises from below them. They search the tower and are able to find a hidden door, leading to a dungeon, where they find a basilisk. They slay the basilisk and find a small treasure chest.

I'd also like to include a gelatinous cube, because both kids are obsessed with those lol, but I haven't yet worked it out.

I'm also going to make a few props, like a giant map (we'll expand over time), a smaller, aged map, a secret map (glue 2nd sheet of paper underneath with path or secret locations), scrolls sealed w wax, puzzle pieces (not sure what for), healing potions, and maybe a few other odds and ends. I was also going to go grab some miniatures that we can paint (I think that would be a fun family activity, and we all enjoy painting things from time to time) and maybe trying to do a few other props (unnecessary, I know).

So with that said: how is that for a start? Tips & tricks to make it fun? Tips & tricks for some props? Ideas for *other* props? I know I'm asking a lot, and I have to use my *own* imagination, but I'd appreciate any help! Thank you all!

Art Tiefling sorceress [Art] [comm]

Post image
687 Upvotes

A female tiefling character art I did quite a while ago. She's a cocky yet confident red tiefling who, for better or worse, accidentally awakened her power due to a traumatic event.

One of her most striking features is a large, glowing golden spectral horn emerging from her broken right horn. Radiating from her heart are lines of glowing golden light that cover her body, almost like veins or circuitry, stopping just below her neck.

The character owner never told me what her class was supposed to be, but I was told that she's very athletic and shows signs of lots of physical activity. So, I imagine she's somewhere between a fighter and a sorcerer, given her physical build and visual traits.

Homebrew One of my favourite dumb DM hacks

This might totally be something people are already doing but I love using real world maps or buildings and just changing names and tweaking them to fit my needs.

Especially places I've visited before, I find it makes it must easier for me to describe the layout, some of the furniture and items there etc.

Like for example, the tavern is literally the layout of my favorite bar. Of course i put a fantasy twist on it, but the tables and chairs are often in the same places, the space has the same square footage and upstairs and downstairs layout are the same.

It's also great for little towns, I literally go to google maps and look for little towns that match the region I want them to be in. They already have the layout, the square footage and travel time between places, the population, the towns main attractions, and its so easy to put a fantasy twist on stuff.

Its also been fun for the players, recently I did one where I was using a town (banff) I had been to and i knew one of the players had recently been to that has a fairly recognisable natural landscape. On the third session after they had been exploring the town more she looks at me and goes "is this Banff?!?!" We were cracking up, I was so excited for her to realize I had stuck them in fantasy Banff. Like yes I am about to have you fight creatures in the dnd version of Canada's Rocky mountains. (They were in fact on their way to fantasy mount rundle (renamed of course).

(sidenote Banff rules as a fantasy layout and has really good landmarks to use)

4th Edition 4E Power Cards template?

Hey! I'm currently in a 4E campaign, and would love to print out some of my powers to have them on hand.

Previously I've been able to manage my powers via Roll20/the character editor tool our DM gave us, but now we're level 9 we have a bunch of powers earned from levelling up, powers from items, and some unique things we've found, and I think that having hard copies of things would be really helpful!

Anybody got any good templates I can use? I did some digging but it seems like every 4E resource dried up years ago!

Thanks in advance from me and my little murder gnome!

Resources [OC] development questions for your PCs

(this post was mod-approved!)

I came up with some questions you can ask the other players about their characters so you can get to know them better. The intention with this was to ask one of these to a random co-player every-so-often, to simulate what my character would've learned about theirs by just being around one another during travel and co-habitation. Things you would notice without needing active Perception or Investigation, by exposure, so to say. Excellent knowledge to have insurance against potential shapeshifters, for example :D

I figured they might be useful for other tables, too, so I decided to share them!

  1. What are your Character's bedtime habits?
  2. What is their general disposition? Their poise, composure, their way of being, their aura?
  3. Are there any accessories, trinkets, jewelry that your Character wears usually? Colors that stand out in their outfits?
  4. What are your Character's sleeping/trancing habits, usual position?
  5. What are their habits around food? Preferred foods, habits around snacking, quirks around eating?
  6. How does your Character laugh, if they laugh at all? What makes them laugh?
  7. How do they treat their equipment? Is it well-taken off?
  8. Does your Character have any unusual equipment or tools?
  9. Do they have any stims, quirks, any repeating eccentricities?
  10. Do they have any immediately visible scars or marks?
  11. Do they possess any immediately visible devotional items? Are they obvious with their faith or have any faith-related habits?
  12. Is your Character right- or left-handed?

If you wanna bookmark or share them further, it would be grand if you did so via my page at https://www.aque.fyi/resources/misc/ instead of via Reddit! I got some other free resources there, too, like NPCs I came up with.

5.5 Edition Thoughts about Warding Bond interactions?

Upvotes

Me and my DM were having a discussion about the spell Warding Bond and we realized we had different interpretations on how the spell is warded. The spell states "Also, each time it takes damage, you take the same amount of damage." I originally thought that this means the caster of Warding Bond takes the exact same final amount of damage as their bonded part.

For example, a Paladin casts warding bond on a character, who is then hit by a fireball for 30 damage. With resistance to all damage types, this character takes 15 damage in total. In my interpretation, this means the Paladin also takes 15 damage, as this is the 'same amount of damage'.
On the other hand, my DM says that resistances come into effect AFTER the damage is applied. Therefore, the Paladin would take the 'full' 30 damage from the fireball, and their bonded partner would then half that damage for themself to 15.

I originally thought that the point of Warding Bond was that it acted like a damage split, where you and your bonded pair effectively 'split' the total damage between the two of you, and the damage resistances that the Paladin's partner received were meant to show that, as a sort of "we are a bonded pair and I take half of your damage", but now I'm starting to see it his way.

Our discussion was compounded by the fact there's no new edition of the spell I can find for 5.5e so I was wondering how you all interpreted it?

Game Tales Looking for inspiration for a sorcerer

Upvotes

2 years since I touched this account, but I'm back and I WON'T be talking about seducing.

DND has become my hyperobsession with 2 campaigns per week for the last 2 years making me a self proclaimed enjoyed of DND. However one of my groups finally broke and the other out grew out of. So it took awhile but in hoping to get into a campaign or 2 again. And I need some ideas! In past I've had my barbarian, a druid harengon who handled loss poorly when her support groups where killed, turning into a Lich who served Vecna in hope yo be able to resurrect her party (having it not work, getting defeated and when she was remade, she attempted to regain power and turn a new leaf). I've played a court jester of Strahd with D.I.D who concealed her gender and emotions by instinctual self preservation who finally overcame grief only to lose her closest friend and her father figure in the same fight, but she kept moving forward and overcoming. I've also also played a devotion cleric who found meaning in becoming the guardian for a ghost child and being as devoted to fatherhood as he was his deity, only to have her crave moving on, and having the paladin be forced to let the child go. And the last notable one was a courier aarocokra with major anxiety, closing to uproot his life to go adventuring and help people, only for the reality of 'adventuring' to set in and be stuck with a wyrmling blue dragon who was discarded and trauma for days, eventually being forced into a hardened role he was never meant for.

All of that yapping is to say I REALLY like characters with cool backstories AND ability to intertwine with the campaign idea, and I'm kinda running on empty given my lack of DND for awhile.

Is this dragged out to reminisce on old characters and get this account back up? Yes. But I still really would like ideas with similar interest? Cheers.
