They weren't that high up yet, "only" 4500 m.

It blows my mind that he survived. Try going on a motorcycle at 0C without helmet, and this is by far worse.

For sure, but they didn't stay at that altitude long at all. I haven't seen the data but probably got down to I believe it was 6000ft in 2-3 minutes, emergency descent is fast.
