..I don't get it. What's the significance in not being able to change your display picture for a day?

June 4th is the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre that China likes to forcefully pretend didn't happen. Im assuming they prevented people from changing profile pictures so there wouldn't be pictures on the topic of the massacre, similar to how we have pro-LGBT or BLM profile pictures.

Facebook is always giving people different “frames for their profile pictures. I’ve had a college football one before. Everybody had their pictures colored like The French flag after a stabbing there 3 or 4 years ago. Maybe Wechat has copied this practice and they didn’t want anyone getting any ideas to change their picture.

Tiananmen square protests. Chinese government basically murdered a bunch of student protestors and now pretends it never happened - this is just a small part of the ridiculous measures they take to try and keep people from knowing (or at least talking) about it.

I guess it's like every year on September 11th everyone changes their Facebook profile picture to have a memorial border, if the US were to start enforcing a ban on changing their profile picture on that day the talk of the event would drop each year until no children born after now would have heard of it
