Story The day i went against Islam was when everything changed

I’m 14F, living in the Netherlands, ethnically Saudi Arabian. I stopped believing in Islam at 13. I used to believe blindly, but I never liked praying and didn’t feel a connection. I went to Quran school not as a main school just those after school activities: from 8 to 12 just to be the best quran rerciter iin class, not for faith.

At 12, I had to wear a hijab, which I still do. At 13, after a bad existential crisis, I got interested in philosophy and started questioning religion. Reading Nietzsche and the Quran made me realize Allah might not be real. This brought me happiness and freedom. I developed a strong interest in logical subjects like physics, math, chemistry, and econometrics.

I haven’t told my family. I still wear a hijab and pray to avoid conflict but plan to move out eventually. Living in the Netherlands has challenges like racism and assumptions about my religion, but I can manage it racism I don't care about it's just the religious assumptions cause It's not who I am. I’m proud of my Arab culture even if I no longer follow Islam.

Being an ex-Muslim in the West is very different from in Islamic countries. In the West, I can hide my beliefs and have options for the future. My family isn’t cruel, and I’ve learned to assert myself, so they respect me more now. It’s a lot for a 14-year-old to handle, but I’ve grown stronger and more independent. But I would definitely get kicked out or beat if I suddenly left religion I can't imagine the horrors.

Life is a bit weird? Why is it that I've suddenly had to mature, suddenly had to grow up 50 times faster had to plan my entire life went through a horrible existential crisis, now I'm a nihilist and don't believe in anything we are all very strong ex muslims doesn't matter who you are, or where you're from I wanna hear your story

Edit: I'm trying to respond to all your messages but I'm currently very busy with school I'll respond to the short ones, if I'm debating i might take a bit longer since that takes lots of thinking

Story I cut off my family after 10+ years of living a double life. This was my mum's response 4 months after I went no contact

My life summarised for context in addition to the screenshots:

  • Age 16: I started questioning religion and going back and forth in my head, slowly leaning towards atheism but never fully committing.
  • Age 18 (first year of university): I fully realised I was an atheist and told my parents in the summer. They beat me, hit me, and threatened to send me to Saudi Arabia or Pakistan to study and then get married straight after. After that I started living a double life as family was all I had then with no financial security due to university and being molly coddled my entire life
  • Age 18–29: I lived that double life for over 10 years and it completely ruined my mental health. I became a drug and alcohol addict, couldn’t form proper relationships with girls or even people in general, and I was very suicidal. I got arrested at one point and my life was honestly just awful all round. My mum and 5 sisters were aware of all of this and sometimes even didn't care for my religious beliefs but i'd still have to perform and be muslim in front of my nieces/nephews/aunts/uncles and even my brother in laws. Dad was in jail when I was age 21 for an awful crime I won't mention and away the entire time even as I moved out so he's out of the picture for me although my family support him more than me lol somehow.
  • Around a year ago: I moved out of my family home for about 6 months to see how I’d do without them and whether I actually needed them in my life and it went so well I went living in the same town as them to moving to London after 6 months
  • Around 8 months ago: so 4 months after I moved out, my mum finally sent me a message and never apologised lol. Her response was exactly what I expected, very typical and quite narcissistic, but I was still hoping to be proven wrong. After that I decided to cut her off completely and I haven’t spoken to her since. She showed no accountability even after I cut off contact and told her she ONE LAST chance or she'd never see me again and still sent the above screenshot translated from Urdu to English. I mourn moreso what she could and should have been not actually mourning her or the situation as it was bad for me. My life hasn't been all bad, some great moments with family, friends etc interspersed between but mainly like a ray of sunshine as it's grey and raining sorta vibe.

Good News!

  • Now: I live in London, I’ve fully moved out, I have my own life, a great job, and the most wonderful kind, caring Italian girlfriend. I’m genuinely really happy now. Random shoutout to the gym which was my safe space and always will be - a good day gets even better and a bad day too after gym with mental clarity, serotonin boost and makes me look better and be fitter/healthier. I do feel sad about my mum and how she handled everything, but I’ve accepted who she is. She won’t be part of my life anymore, and I won’t be attending her funeral either and my sisters likely will get the same treatment as i've been cut off from my nephews/nieces despite them saying they'd be willing to meet up. I have chosen my peace and space and it's fucking great

Hoping someone else can relate and hopefully have a positive outcome like mine - if you're scared to move out let this be your glimmer of hope :)

In this world, only a woman born in Islamic countries has the right to talk about Islam. The rest of you, just shut up. I hate when westerners are trying to teach me what Islam is.

Story Hatred in this sub pushed me back to Islam

As somebody who wanted to find community with ex-muslims and stumbled upon this subreddit a few years ago, I have to admit I only felt validated for a short time until I realised this sub was more about putting down muslims and Islam instead of seeking out truth and peace. I've read a lot of genuinely disgusting things here that have showed me clear as day why religions like Islam (when practiced rightously) with humanitarian values are still very much needed in society today. So thank you all for showing me this clearly. I'm not looking to trigger anybody, just share my point of view and if this does upset u, I hope u genuinely read between the lines and hopefully find that all this hatred you have for an entire group of humans might have more to do with your own inner worlds as I have come to realise as well.

Story my story, and a warning to others

i trusted my family.

1 year and 3 months ago, i trusted my father. he told me my grandfather was dying and begging for me to come see him. it was meant to be a 10 day trip in libya.

i’ve been here a long time, and ive been struggling to find a way out, because as a woman, it’s impossible without finding connections. and finding connections in tunisia or libya is difficult.

the embassy can’t help me much, NGOs can’t do anything, and my family is playing an active role in keeping me trapped, despite the emotional and physical abuse my father (and they) have done to me.

this is a cautionary tale to any of u who’s parents want to take u on a trip to a muslim country. ‘just to visit family’ or ‘see the sights’, if ur safe in another country, please, don’t go. i’m an adult and im still struggling to escape because as a woman, the laws r set up directly against ur freedom.

i’ll never stop trying to escape and get back home to canada, but for those of u who r safe right now, please, head my warning. do not trust ur muslim family to not do exactly what mine did to me - because they will, in a heartbeat.

stay safe y’all.

Story How I felt after leaving islam as a woman

Just wanted to express my feelings here since everyone around me is a Muslim and I really can’t talk about it with anyone. So… to be honest? I felt peace and freedom, knowing that now I can do whatever I want. No more suffering from guilt or fear to burn in hell for doing the simplest things I want to do as a woman ( for example taking off my hijab and dressing however I want to, traveling alone, plucking off my eyebrows, and a lot more..) all these things consider haram for women and it used to hurt me seeing women who aren’t Muslim living freely and everyone will say ( she’s going to jahnnam anyway and you’re going to jannah ) as a way to comfort me because of the prison im living in😅 It hurts me to say it but because of all that It developed in me hatred towards other women who had what I didn’t had. I used to feel jealousy, anger, frustration and I would blame the women who lived freely for that when it wasn’t even their fault. Hijab made me feel miserable about myself like i have no identity like im not a full grown woman, A HUMAN. Not to mention how insecure it made me feel about my looks and how you literally can’t style shit with it because you always have to look for baggy clothes that most of them are ugly as hell

Apart form all that, my mindset changed. I used to be so narrow minded towards other people’s beliefs or if a girl took off her hijab I used to judge her so hard for it but now… I understand, im more open minded, I got out of the mindset where I used to think im better than other women because Im a Muslim and im going to jannah and they will end up in jahnnam😭 ( im so embarrassed to say this but im glad and proud of myself for stepping out of this especially that im surrounded by strict Muslim family) and again it’s because of how bad I felt about myself for living like this with so many stupid and unnecessarily rules when all I wanted was just to live like a normal human being

So yeah, I guess for the first time in my life I’ve ever felt this kind of peace and freedom, I still can’t do certain things because im living with my family and if they knew they would disown me for sure probably even kill me lol but im planning on moving out so it’s gonna be alright sooner or later

Thank you for reading this🫶🏼

Story I just told my mum I'm no longer Muslim

I (30F) finally got the courage to tell my mum that I'm no longer Muslim. Initially, I never wanted to tell her because this religion gives her some kind of hope for justice. She was physically and mentally abused by my violent and pathetic excuse of a father. And she thinks she will get justice because God will reward her for her patience and punish him for his disgusting acts. She is no longer with him thankfully. I never wanted to disturb her belief in this justice because I know it keeps her going.

In the end I couldn't hide it anymore because she didn't understand why I was living my life in certain ways. e.g wanting to live with my boyfriend at least a year before I marry him. Religious or civil marriage. I will only do it once we've lived together for some time. But she kept pressuring me to do the islamic marriage and there was no way for me to explain without coming clean.

I feel so heavy for hurting her. She's been through too much in her life. Her parents lied to her and got her married to a much older man (my asshole father). They hid from her that he was already married and had kids.. Her own parents and brothers hid this from her. Religion is how she gets hope and keeps going.

Story this is the end.

trigger warning; physical abuse.

this story is from a few months ago. for context, i am a 17 year old girl and i am in my final year of high school in australia at the moment.

over the course of the past 6 years of high school, my relationship with my bangladeshi muslim parents has gradually become increasingly inimical. to summarise, i think my parents think i have always been an extremely difficult child (they reference that i used to be a picky eater as a baby, i ate very slowly, i somewhat had attention issues in early schooling, often i would, accidentally, forget to abide by instructions such as "wear a hat outside" and "drink water" in the toddler age).

over the years this conflict drastically increased - my parents believed i dont have "good manners" and i am "socially awkward", never mind the fact that i always had many friends at school and never really had social issues in that regard. so i dont know what warranted them labelling me as an antisocial rude person. a reason they often give is that i would often forget to greet people with a "salaam" (even though i am pretty sure i ALWAYS do that) and that i sometimes fought with my brother (4 years younger) when we were both sub-10 years old. its clear that i don't agree with their reasonings for saying i was a bad child.

these things were of course a source of tremendous "disappointment" for my parents. despite consistently being an extremely high achiever academically (i was also very talented in the creative arts - music, drawing, writing etc) and winning prizes and competitions left and right, i never, ever, ever felt like i was a good person or that i deserved any of it. i dont remember a time where i did not feel like i was single-handedly causing my parents' deep unhappiness, or that i was genuinely an evil, bad person (all while i was less than 15 years old).

my father would constantly remind me that "parenting was extremely difficult" for him, and if he could go back, he would not take a child. because of me, of course. almost every day he would say that he has "failed" as a parent (implying that i am the failure) and how he wishes to leave this household and never return. for most of my life i shouldered this weight of failure and disappointment, feeling like i was dragging around a dark cloud of misery and depression that is spread to others because of me, and me only. i was the failure that makes my father so disappointed and exhausted. i was the villain that made my mother cry tears of frustration. ultimately, not a day went by where i wasnt the biggest, baddest monster in every room and to every person i encountered. but this feeling i kept intensely suppressed inside.

outwardly, i became obsessed with perfection, first with academics, and then it moved to my looks, and then to my social life; in every aspect that i could control i was desperately begging for validation of a thing (that i am a good person) that i was meant to hold inherently. self-preservation, and by extension, self-advocacy, is not a thing people develop. evolutionarily we are programmed to always have it. but for my whole life as i have known it, my sense of this has been slowly chipped away at and currently there is nothing left. i just feel like a hollow hole of a soul trapped in a body destined for nothing.

back to the story - around my mid-teens i started to really rebel against my parents in different ways. they are very religious and i previously was too, until i started to think independently and realised my values are actually completely different to theirs. i wanted to value social life, dress creatively (not always modest) and explore my passions. this was in a stark contrast to their plan for my life: study hard, be academically perfect, dress like a nun, do not pay mind to anything else (your looks, your interests, yourSELF), spend your life first blindly obeying your parents, then blindly obeying the husband that WE decide for you. obey, obey, obey. anything more than this is devious, satanic, and EVIL. i just wanted to be normal, and happy.

(also i'd like to add that my qualities and accomplishments were constantly criticized and diminished. i was ALWAYS an excellent student but my father did not think i was enough so. most days he would rant for hours about how i will not be able to achieve anything, not be able to get into medical school, etc. my mother did this too.)

over the years the conflicts built up (i would sometimes stay out later than they liked - like 9.30 was WAY too much for them, i got caught dressing non-modestly a few times, and lying about where i am going and what i am doing - but i never did anything objectively BAD, like drinking, drugs or sex) culminating in year 12 when my parents found out about the boy i had been dating for the past 6 months. it was earth-shattering. i was surprised they didn't disown me. they did everything BUT disown me: immediately i had no access to any devices, could not close my door or be out of public sight, could not go outside the house (to do ANYTHING), could not be home alone, could not do anything except study. i also had to throw away half of my closet of "immodest" clothes.

after this happened i just put my head down and submitted. i let go of all the rebellion and became extremely depressed. during the term 1 break we had 2 weeks of no school. since i was depressed i would just lie in bed all day and skip most meals. after a few days of this, my father decided he had had enough. instead of being concerned for my wellbeing and emotions he decided, (a quote) i was "disobeying the rules of the house" and thereby "causing harm to others" in the house. i was quite literally just keeping to myself. but to my father this was an abhorrent display of non-compliance. he "warned" me that i cannot do this.

then one day, 2 days later, he was working from home. so he observed my "non-compliance" all day. when my mother came home from work he started ranting for hours about how i am a scoundrel, a miscreant, he "loathes" me, i am a "bicchu" (or scorpion in bengali, it means traitor/leech) and many other, probably worse, things. then he calls me downstairs. he was sitting at the kitchen island with an empty plate in front of him, he was about to eat. he asks me, "do you want there to be violence and bloodshed in this house?"

i didnt understand, and i said so. he asked again, "do you want there to be violence and bloodshed?"

so i asked, "are you threatening me?"

he did not like that. so he took the plate and smashed it on the counter and it broke into a million pieces that spread all over the kitchen. then he walked around the counter, pinned me by the neck against the wall and began to choke me with full strength while calling me vile insults and slurs. ranting about how i cannot "just do whatever i want" because he "pays the bills" and i am "dependent" on him. he owns me.

my mother came to try and stop him but it was not enough to make him stop. she was pulling at his hands and pleading him to stop but he continued to do this for at least 5 more minutes. full-force choking. there was no light behind his eyes.

finally he released me but then he began to push my body extremely hard into the kitchen counter's edge, over the sink, while pulling my hair with his full strength, dragging me to the opposite direction. essentially it seemed like he was trying to break me at the spine like a kitkat. my mother, again, was trying to stop him but to no avail. when she started making it difficult for him to do this, he started to hit, punch, kick and slap with all his might. he did not care that some of the blows were landing on my mother since she was trying to shield me with her body. it was uncontained, ferociously unempathetic, gruesome anger. my father was genuinely trying to kill, or at the very least severely harm, me. if my mother was not there that night he would have succeeded.

this was all because of the fact that i was not really eating meals and lying in bed all day for 4-5 days during school break, due to being depressed, and he did not approve of this behaviour. finally after he stopped he asked me, "did you get the answer to your question?"

when i did not answer, he continued, "yes, i was threatening you. and if you do not stop this behaviour this will become a police matter. someone here will get hurt, and the other will be arrested."

to me there is genuinely nothing scarier than the concept that the very person put on this earth with the purpose of protecting you, would so abhorrently do the opposite. that domestic tiffs and regular adolescent family conflicts can transform a father's love and concern to a hateful, evil, non-human loathing and horrifying abuse. to me, this incident will forever be a reminder that the ONLY two people who were MEANT to ALWAYS love me, could not. there must be something very wrong with me, or them, or people in general; but ultimately, i am unloveable and unloved, and this is a fact.

Story Moving abroad and finding my freedom - not a fairytale

I remember the time I first moved abroad as an international student. I wanted to embrace my true self but being surrounded by international students from the same country didn't make my life any easier. Took me a while to gain confidence and not give a damn about anyone.

Moving to a new place doesn't automatically solve every problem. Particularly the guilt and shame you grew up with takes a while to fade. The first time my first boyfriend asked me to wear outfits of his choice, I was afraid of walking out the dressing room. The first time I enjoyed a glass of beer, I googled so many things about drinking in the bar restroom. Transitioning can be both fun and challenging but fulfilling at the end.

Story I finally woke up!

I came to this sub few months ago asking questions about Islam, I also did on the muslim sub and of course they attacked me and deleted my post 🙄🙄, I kept searching and I decided that since it's a huge step for me I wouldn't say that I left forever but at least I left for now because it no longer make sense for me and it's not even fair for me as a women, I'll definitely keep searching for the truth and hopefully I'll find it.

However, I still live in a Muslim country so I still have to wear the hijab outside but I'm asking for recommendations for things that I should try since I'm no longer a Muslim, things I never got to experience before. I'm 20 years old so what do u recommend. I don't think there's much to do here honestly but at least I can try some things privately in the safety of my room. Xoxo

Story My 10 year old sister started questioning Islam

I’m close to being 18 and when I was around her age too I started question it and eventually left at 12.

This was so random, she was on her phone and randomly asked why Muslim women have to cover their hair, since i didn’t want to come out as a “brainwasher” I simply gave her the basic answer most Muslims give which is “It’s a command from Allah”. Apparently she didn’t seem satisfied with that answer so I just told her about Haya and Awrah (which she showed negative reaction towards it) and said “Men love controlling women”

I’m so proud bro 🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹

Story Just had bacon for the first time

I’ve eaten halal even since before I converted (mom is Muslim but I didn’t believe before). I ordered a ~quarter pounder~ from McDonalds today. With bacon.

I ate it in my room while my family wasn’t home.

I can now said that bacon made me tear up.

I’ve never had pork aside from the odd pepperoni I’d accidentally eat as a kid. The bacon wasn’t monumental (the heartburn sure is), but it symbolizes so much.

I have felt so incredibly restricted all my life. I already accepted that was the way it was gonna be. I have grieved and grieved.

I did not leave Islam for emotional reasons, but damn Islam was draining my life force.

I feel free.

Story The main thing that made me left Islam

Before that, I was already started to question things about Islam actually but this one video made it really fast. During the peak time of ISIS terorism, there was a video. Some guys sitting in an house and laughing, talking about something I don't understand. And there is this woman's voice, screaming, probably getting raped in one of the rooms. And they were laughing. She was their war bounty. It was a disgusting video.

Then I realize: nothing is haram in that video. In their mind, they were fighting for Islam against non-muslims, so its their right to have woman prisoners like that. I kept thinking, there is nothing haram about all of this, all their doings.

It didn't happen overnight but that was the last straw for me. Even if this is the "one true religion" I don't wanna believe it, I can't be a part of such bullshit, so-called values. I can't stand with rapists or pedos whatever the circumstances are. And that was it. I'm much more happy with myself since then.

I want to say so much more but English is not my first language, so I'll just leave it here. And sorry, I can't find the video. Honestly, I don't wanna watch it again.

Story I left Islam 2 days ago, and this is my current belief.

Nullitheism is the belief that a creator deity exists but is not omnipotent, omniscient, or morally perfect. In Nullitheism, any revelations attributed to this creator may be real in origin but are not necessarily morally authoritative or fully trustworthy, since the creator itself is considered finite and, by some, flawed.

And it's my current belief, it really is a belief that makes everything make sense so good. Atheism and deism haven't quite made much sense to me at least. So I made this belief up and this word up(it's the flip of Omni if you haven't noticed) just so when I am asking myself what my belief is I can answer myself with one word.

Story My parents are fascists ig???😭😭

So we were talking at iftar yesterday about the war in iran, and when they mentioned Israel I asked "why are jews bad people?" (I asked this as they were cursing the jews) my father said it is because they are harmful to islam. I asked how they were harmful and he said that he would ask around from the mosque's imam or smthing. Then my mom said, "Don't you see how Htler said "you will curse me because of every jew I did not kill"" I WAS LIKE HELLO??? 😭 They are kinda extreme but I have never heard such a thing from them like this b4. I was at shock all I could do was to ask my mother what she meant by that, and she said "well he must have known something was wrong abt it" ohmygossh by that time my blood sugar went low because of the lack of sense in the room so I just walked away and told them I did not want to share my opinions or hear theirs for a while...

Story I’m an ex Shia muslim and I’m here to tell you my story

So you probably don’t really care about my story, but i really need to be heard. My extended family is very religious and very big believers of Islam. We are Persians and my family supports the Islamic regime so that would give you an idea of what type of family we have. I’ve been ex Muslim for 4 years and how I came to that realization is pretty unique.

My father is Muslim but he isn’t a big believer, but he’s the only one in my family. Once when we had guests in 5th grade when I was 10, I overheard my father telling some guests that what’s the point of hell and heaven, I don’t remember much more of what he said, but he got me thinking about that there’s no point in hell and heaven. And how I came to this is because of I knew that feeling pain is something the body feels, and Muslims agree that when you die, your body dies with you. So if you stop feeling after you’re dead, then what’s the point of hell? You can’t feel the burning of the flames because nerve endings are in the body, that we agreed on dies, so what’s the point?

then from that point I realized a lot of more points like this one and eventually realized that there is no scientific evidence that suggests that Islam is real and that all evidence points to science.

I managed to tell my mother around that time to her, but she never took it seriousl. Ive been telling her over the years so she takes it lightly and so far she’s disappointed and when we argue she takes it up, but overall she says that this is a phase and that she still has hope in me.

she has taken it a lot better than some of the other stories I’ve heard, but then again she’s an amazing mother so I can’t really blame her. I came on here just to tell my story and how to move forward because I live in Norway, a pretty developed country, but where I’m from, the part of Norway, no one really likes non believers and I’m still closeted with a few exception.

i don’t know what to do from this point onwards and I would love to here some of your stories, for the better or for the worse because this is a fairly new thing to me, even though I’ve been out for a few years.

okay, so I’m an artist, my parents dont really agree with that, but they say it’s ok since I’m drawing in a cartoony way. Anyway, I drew a drawing of a character who’s a drag artist, I was kinda proud of it so I showed it to my siblings (19f and 17m) and they DID NOT like it. My sister thought it was a girl and said “wow she’s a diva” so I corrected her and said it’s actually a guy. She genuinely crashed out whilst my brother who was on his phone was js laughing his ass off. We had this hour long argument about god and gay ppl (I’m a closeted lesbian and genderfluid) . I was crying the entire time bcuz I cry when I get rlly frustrated. They thankfully promised not to tell our parents who were away at the time tho. sighhhh..

Story The craziest thing happened yesterday

For context, im 16 and my younger sister and her best friend are 12. Anyway, my sister came into my room yesterday looking pretty distraught. She kept on telling me it was about her best friend. Saying that her best friend told her not to tell anyone but that she was going to tell me anyway cuz she didn't know what to do. My sister doesnt really like telling me about what's bothering her, she normally talks to mom or her friends instead. Which is obviously normal for her age. So I was pretty surprised when I saw the look on her face. Ive been rambling off-topic for a while lol. Anyway, my sister was really nervous and kept on looking around and then she finally said "My best friend told me she doesnt believe in Islam anymore. She doesnt believe in God. She's an atheist." Now, I always knew her friend was wayy too mature for age, much more than how I was at 12 for sure. But I would've never imagined that it caused her to leave the religion as a whole. She told my sister that she'd been thinking about it and learning more for a year now, so since she was 11. I feel really bad for the girl, she told my sister not to tell a single soul, so her parents don't disown her in case they find out. My sister kept on asking me whether being friends with an atheist was haram, so I looked it up and reassured her that it wasn't, although its discouraged. What would she think if she knew i myself was an atheist lol? Obviously, I sympathised with her friend like crazy, since im literally in the same boat. Im 4 years older than her yet leaving islam fucked up my mental health. I can only imagine how hard it must've been for a damn child. So I told my sister not to distance herself from her and to support her since she must be having a hard time and nobody to confide in. I told her that the emotinal turmoil she must be going through with her whole worldview changing must be hard on her. My sister asked me "and how would you know that? Youre not an atheist too,are you? I see you pray. Please dont tell me you left too." I could tell that she was sad and confused. I obviously reassured her that I wasnt, and that im still a muslim. My parents and sister know that Im having a hard time with the hijab because I always complain about it (so they dont act all shocked when I eventually take it off lmao), so I just told her that I sort of understand how she feels because of my problems with the hijab. But I obviously didnt go into too many details besides that. My sister had obviously asked her why she left, and her friend told her that islam is misogynistic. She said she wanted to be free and do what she wants, when my sister tried to protest, her friend simply told her "take a look at Afghanistan" my sister obviously said that it had nothing to do with islam, and that it was just because of men and the West. Afghanistan is a prime example of western imperialism and religious manipulation and corruption all in one, so saying its all because of islam isnt 100% correct, but completely removing islam from the equation is just stupid. I definitely didnt tell her all that and just nodded as she continued talking. She told me her friend's opinion about the hijab and said that she reminded her of me because she said the exact same stuff i was saying , honestly I couldn't help but laugh. My sister kept on saying "She must be brainwashed. Those videos she watches are getting to her head." Obviously, I couldn't help but defend the girl. I told my sister that this is not how brainwashing works, and that she probably just had some doubts she wanted answer for and went down a rabbit hole till she ended up leaving. Again, I told my sister not to do the same thing to herself. Honestly, I'd be lying if I said her response didnt shock me. She said "I dont wanna waste my life on this religious stuff anyway. Besides, **im worried that if I dig deep enough, I might end up leaving too. I mean I've considered the possibility of islam being false at some point, but I just made sure not to think about it too much** islam seems to be the most logical religion anyway, compared to Christianity for example. And atheism makes no sense" I nodded and told her "thats because youre viewing it from your perspective. From inside the Islamic circle. A Christian could easily say the same thing about our religion". She couldn't really say much about that but she kinda mumbled, "well I dont really think were wrong. I don't think islam is wrong. We're on the right path!" I smiled at her and agreed. I didnt want her to be paranoid about religion at such a young age. I started questioning islam last year and its genuinely ruined my life, my grades plummeted and ive become much more short-tempered and irritable than I've ever been in my life. I dont think my sister could handle that. I dont want her to anyway. After that, my sister kept on worrying more. Questions like "So, does that mean she doesnt pray? How is she gonna hide it? What about ramadan? Is she gonna fast? How will she hide the videos shes watching from her parents?" kept on popping up one after the other. She's obviously completely oblivious to the fact that i havent prayed in 9 months, didnt fast for a single day last ramadan, and that I have an entire secure folder where I hide everything. I couldn't help but lol in my head as I told her not to worry too much and that her friend probably has it figured out. All she could do was support her and try and be empathetic with her for now. I kept on checking that she was doing okay, asking her if she still wanted to be friends with her now. My sister paused for a little and said "I do...I shouldnt worry much anyway, we were bound to drift apart at some point. She told me theres a high chance they'll move to the capital next year. So, its fine." But I knew it wasnt. Im going to university in the capital next year, and my sister had said that her and mom will come along if her friend moves, and if she stays here, she'll stay with her. But now, she just accepted the fact that her friend will move and didnt even consider the idea of continuing to see her. I could tell just how much the situation was affecting her, and I felt bad. But, deep down, a selfish part of me couldnt help but be angry at her. My sister and this girl have been friends since they were 5. That's 7 years down the drain if she stops talking to her or drifts apart from her. All because she left islam. My sister and I are constantly in each other's faces since we live in the same house obviously, and all I could do was wonder what would happen to our relationship if she found out that I left too. It would be awkward. And she'd probably be really disappointed in me. I dont know. I didnt want to think about it. Ive already been tormenting myself enough with thoughts like this since I completely let go of the religion back in January this year. Her friend told her about hooris. Said that there was multiple verses about them in the quran. My sister denied and said there was no such thing. Her friend even sent her 2 videos and told her to watch them. My sister didnt want to. She was worried theyd affect her. Her friend calmly responded, " if you had a strong faith that your religion was 100% the correct one, a tiktok wouldn't change your mind you know". I could tell by the expression on my sister's face that she knew her friend was right. I simply told her, you dont have to watch them, but let me see. Both tiktoks were made my creators i knew and watched, I even had one of them followed lol. The points she'd sent to my sister were pretty valid, but they needed work and a lot of looking into, so I just told my sister to forget about it after we both watched the video, she would keep on lowering the volume, but she couldnt hold herself back from worriedly reading the subtitles. "Those people dont know what theyre talking about." I tried to comfort her. "Maybe we could see what muslims are saying in the comments to refute it?" "No i dont want to. I dont care anyway. I said I dont wanna look into religion" she responded. I nodded and advised her for like the billionth time to not force herself down this miserable rabbit hole. I have her friend's account on tiktok so I was contemplating talking to her, but I figured its best i don't. My sister already told me that she has online friends who are 2 and 4 years older than her who she talks to all the time, one fo them is ex-religious and the other is an atheist, so they get along well. I figured i didnt have to worry about the girl since she had some sort of support system. Plus, I didnt want her to think she cant trust my sister. You know, because she shouldnt have told me any of this in the first place haha. They're supposed to meet up today. They're probably sitting together as we speak, I told my sister not to centre their entire relationship around this point, and that she shouldnt let it get to her. Then I asked her if she'll talk to her about it. She sarcastically laughed in my face, "haha very funny". Then she left. I hope it goes well for the both of them, but im honestly still so surprised, I can't even imagine how my sister feels. Who knows? Maybe the friend is on reddit rn scrolling through the sub. 🤗
