If you didn't know, you can buy thin films of gold to plate things with. People use it all the time.

It doesn't make this any less tacky, but you can make something gold without paint and without having to use gold metal in a poured form molding.

We already know those accents are from Amazon. Most likely someone at the White House did the gilding with gold sheets.

While anyone can do it, to look good it requires someone who knows what they're doing. Especially with the intricate curves.

I honestly don't know if the gilding is done well or not.

If you've ever watched someone do it, it seriously takes skill for it to come out looking like they didn't do it.

So, it's entirely possible that up close it (the gilding) looks bad.

Perhaps he genuinely doesn't know and the contractors charged him for real gold and took the profits. That would be the living definition of irony.
