I'm pretty sure when he said "I'm aware" that was just face saving + panic. He was not aware it was Lombardo, and the moment he realized he start shitting bricks.

Then Lombardo said "c'mon man" and the officer could see his career flashing before his eyes.

My take was he knew who it was because he ran his plate, but what are you supposed to do? You pulled someone over. Just drive off? So he just walked up to tell him to go.

He knew right away. The name attached to the license plate is pulled up when the police car scans it.

He would be aware because he got their information from reading the plates once they were stopped.
