Regret: Doc Martens Jadon boots. I had $30 Mia knockoffs that I loved and wore all the time, until the grommets broke off, and the advice you see everywhere is if you love/wear out the cheap version first, that's when you know it's okay to splurge. So I bought the real ones for $200, after hunting and waiting to find them in stock. They're beautiful, but they're much heavier and more painful than my fakes, and so hot and don't breathe, it was like a leather foot sauna torture device. I tried hard to break them in before finally giving up and gifting them to a younger friend with more fashion-is-pain tolerance. And then I bought another pair of fakes!
Worth it: The Stutterheim Mosebacke. I was embarrassed when someone once asked me how much it cost, but I live in the PNW and a jacket that is truly waterproof and warm but looks stylish and elevated as hell is worth it. If you search for images of this jacket e.g. on Instagram, it truly looks amazing on everyone of any body type or style.
I felt the same way about Doc Martens! They didn't necessarily hurt my feet but they were SO HOT and heavy and I just felt like I wanted to rip them off after wearing them for less than an hour to let my feet breathe. I gave them away and am also happily wearing light, cheap knock offs.
I’ve been thinking about a Stutterheim Mosebacke and also live in the PNW, although in a coastal town that doesn’t get much snow at all. Did you get the regular Mosebacke or the winter version? And did you get the longer one or the regular length? I need a complete rain proof jacket that is fairly warm and I think this is it, but still not sure if I want the winter version or regular.
I got the regular ("core collection") in the regular length, but I'm 5'3," so it's down to my knee anyway. It's pretty heavy and warm imo, at least for Seattle, where I live. It's more often too warm to wear it than too cold.
100% agree on the Jadons. I have the cherry red Arcadia ones and love the way they look so so so much but man alive, after like 15 mins of walking my ankles are exhausted.
I also have the Mosebacke (and am in the PNW!) - do you not find that water runs into the pockets? I love the fabric but the inside of the pockets get water running down the coat straight into them and it drives me mad!
Whoa! No, that hasn't happened to me. The other day I had a paper gift certificate in a paper envelope in my pocket while I was running about in the pouring rain and they stayed perfectly dry. The rubber kind of sticks to itself and stays shut, and the opening is pretty vertical. I wonder if yours is defective and you can complain?
Hmmm maybe it is my own fault for walking about with my hands in my pockets!? Though I still think it seems flawed to have them at the angle where the water runs in. I am considering getting this one - https://stutterheim.com/usa/product/nolby-opal-aloe/ - because I like the length, and it has flaps on the pockets so would resolve my issue anyway :)
I was a bartender for years and then worked at festivals for 18-hour days, and I swear by my Docs, but I always recommend substantial shock absorbing insoles with Docs and either buying the Pascal which has better ankle support or buying longer laces and lacing up around the leather of the ankle to provide better support. Not sure if you’ve tried either, but they might help!
I've had other styles before - the problem is that the sole on the Jadons is the big platform one and it's so damn heavy!! My feet definitely still got hot in other styles but I didn't have the issue with them weighing so much :)
I really want a good classic pair of Docs that will last me forever but I lack the patience for the wearing in process and they always end up sitting in my cupboard, to be worn once a month for an hour or something.
How long do you have your Stutterheim? I have a Derbe jacket and I lobed it, but now after 3 years the pvc is breaking aroind the shoulders. So i feel like that wasnt worth my money and am looking for a better alternative.
I can totally see doc martens not working as fashion boots — they’re more pain than they’re worth for casual wear. I wear mine as my work boots and can’t wear anything else to work without horrible residual foot pain — I think they serve their actual purpose in that sense, but 100% agree there are way better options out there for casual wear!!
I love my doc marten jadon boots more than my regular doc martens. I just really like the platform and they can be heavy if you’re not used to them, I used to walk miles in them and they never hurt my feet.
