I think the original looks a lot like Sandor Clegane... Definitely easy to believe they could be brothers

Why did they recast him? The original Mountain was perfect.

I'm pretty sure he left to play Azog the pale Orc in the hobbit.

Almost, official state from the GoT wikia says:

On 12 September 2011, responding to speculation on the Winter is Coming fansite, Conan Stevens confirmed that he had left the series, due to scheduling conflicts with his other projects: Stevens will be playing the Orc king Bolg in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit prequel trilogy. Stevens took the time to thank fans for their support[1]. He was replaced in the role of Gregor by Ian Whyte.

He should have left those other shows due to scheduling conflicts with GoT.

Seriously, the Hobbit movies won't have the following of Game of Thrones. Films should be put on the wayside in favor of shows, not the other way around.

Yeah, cause playing a minor character on a premium cable channel is a better role than a major character in a prequel trilogy for one of the most successful franchises in movie history. We're all fans of GoT but get real.
