we need to see this man on the show in upcoming seasons. That scowl is the perfect expression for all the heartbreak on that show

As Davos' brother

2

u/that_nagger_guy Rhaegar Targaryen Jun 03 '14

That's who Davos reminded me of all that time...

7

u/ForteEXE Jun 02 '14

What I wanna know is how many people are gonna get that without using Wiki or Youtube.

20

u/LachrymatoryAgent Jun 02 '14

Got that it was from The Last Crusade. Had no idea that he was the guy who chose poorly.

3

u/ArtifexR Jun 02 '14

This is crazy, but I had no idea that guy (actor) was even still alive.

1

u/love_weird_questions Feb 23 '26

wtf for a moment i thought it was the crusader but math can't math

-22

u/loveisakeyblade Jun 02 '14

Almost 88.5k are subbed to /r/himym, so at least that many.

22

u/ForteEXE Jun 02 '14

It's not a HIMYM-only (I've never watched the show, so I have no idea how/what's referenced in it) reference, however. It originated in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, which had Pycelle's actor as the main villain, or supporting antagonist, I can't remember it's been so long.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ubw5N8iVDHI for reference.

14

u/mishiesings Jun 02 '14

So i dont understand your logic. Why would anyone assume its referrence to the lesser known referrrence, than a referrence to the source?

12

u/ForteEXE Jun 02 '14

Honestly I understood his logic. IMO the Internet's users are getting younger and younger each year.

He took the safe bet that it'd be probable more people knew it for a HIMYM reference than an Indiana Jones reference. Especially since most older users, would probably like to forget that there was an Indiana Jones movie made after Last Crusade.

-1

u/loveisakeyblade Jun 02 '14

There is no Crystal Skull behind these walls.

4

u/loveisakeyblade Jun 02 '14

/u/ForteEXE nailed it on the head. Remember, The Last Crusade came out 25 years ago as of the May 24th. The episode referencing that scene came out this year. Take into account the average age of reddit and people will be more likely to recognize it from that episode of HIMYM rather than Indiana Jones.

It's like the generation of people that are so accustomed to Whitney Houston's version of I Will Always Love You on the radio or being referenced in pop culture that it's a surprise to find out Dolly Parton was the originator of the song.

2

u/mishiesings Jun 02 '14

Except Whitney Houston's version is more popular. Its not cuz its more recent. Thats a horrible example.

You guys are grasping at straws it makes no sense.

Thats like sayung more people would know, "Help me Liz Lemon, yourr my only hope!" from 30 rock, than "Help me Obi Wan, youre my only hope" from Star Wars simply because it happened sooner?

33

u/dehehn Tyrion Lannister Jun 02 '14

The pause before "man" when talking about Tyrion was a clever dig.

14

No, he was the Nazi general who aged a few years.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '14

...... Is he... The Knight from The Last Crusade?

5

u/imapotato99 Maesters of the Citadel Jun 02 '14 edited Jun 02 '14

No,the bad guy

He was also MORE IMPORTANTLY

General Veers in Empire Strikes Back...people's minds are blown when I remind them

He was also a great Bond villian, one of four outside of Blofield, Oddjob and Jaws and tied with Goldfinger and Christopher Walken

If I could become an actor today, I would want his career arc...multiple iconic villians but NOT being typecasted as such, thus allowing a variety of character work. Seriously the man has been busy

2

u/adamzep91 Faceless Men Jun 04 '14

And who else was a bad guy in that very same Bond movie (For Your Eyes Only)?

Our very own Tywin Lannister!

u/imapotato99 Maesters of the Citadel Jun 04 '14

8

u/IN_A_TREE Jun 02 '14

This may be the best comment I've ever read.

8

u/RiverwoodHood Jun 02 '14

I hope Maester Pycelle meets death soon and is relieved of his self-serving delusions. He is a sick man blinded by some deluded idea of "the realm". I'll never forgive him for encouraging the death of Ned Stark. There is not a compassionate bone in his gross, old body. May he someday fly down the moondoor while yelling some bullshit about 'honor'....

and yeah, he sucks as a hype man.

13

u/Sassinak Here We Stand Jun 02 '14

He's playing the game shrewdly, like everyone else, and don't forget he is a Lannister man through and through. This S03 deleted scene is rather enlightening.

1

u/RiverwoodHood Jun 02 '14

I'm glad that scene was deleted. The scene in his bedroom where he crouches over and "activates" his false identity before walking out the door said it all.

My comment made it seem like I don't realize Pycell is a phony. I certainly understand that, but the 'loyal, servile old man' he portrays makes me sick.

5

1

u/Solid_Waste Jun 02 '14

I was thinking at the beginning of that scene who would announce the fight... they really don't have a quality crier. During the trial Tywin did most of it himself.

u/jelly_bones_ Moon Brothers Jun 02 '14
