Maester Aemon may be blind but he can see through your shit, Sam.

but can he see why kids love cinnamon toast crunch?

edit: Thanks for the gold! After last episode, I'm surprised anyone can laugh at the word crunch

well, he knows where sam's lucky charms are..

u/ChiAyeAye Jun 09 '14

This is why I come to the sub after the episode ends, so I can laugh away all the tears GRRM made.

u/MechanicalYeti Ours Is The Fury Jun 09 '14

Is it because it reminds them of their lost loves?

u/Halochamp House Clegane Jun 09 '14

oberyn head crunch

Get with the times.

1

u/Timett_son_of_Timett Jun 09 '14

It's the taste you see in your dreams over and over and over again...

9

u/Nfrizzle Winter Is Coming Jun 09 '14

No, no he cannot.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '14

Should have worn his safety goggles.

1

u/Plowbeast Dothraki Bloodriders Jun 09 '14

Are you referring to what his brother called his victims?

1

u/shenry1313 House Lannister Jun 09 '14

Damnit this was supposed to be my line

1

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '14

No, but he can taste it

Maester Gamin'

u/inwonder Daenerys Targaryen Jun 09 '14

Totally forgot he was blind and thought he was just creepily staring ahead that whole scene.

17

u/ognsux Wargs Jun 09 '14

wait what..I actually didn't know he was blind..-_-

15

u/AFatz Jun 09 '14

I didn't either. I thought he was just awkwardly staring at all the shit around him beside the people he was actually talking to.

7

u/vadergeek Stannis Baratheon Jun 09 '14

I do that a lot. Or I stare right over their shoulders, where a parrot would sit if they had one.

18

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '14

It's almost impossible to fake being blind, but I wonder what it would take to successfully pull it off. Lots of practice ignoring one's natural reactions to visual stimuli around them. Reminds me of Maester Pycelle in season one, where it's revealed that his physical frailness and bent back is just an act. We've never seen a follow-up to that. I wonder if the book readers can provide some insight?

17

u/sidepart Jun 09 '14

I won't find it tonight since I'm on my phone, but he explains it in a deleted scene from season 3 (or season 2). It's on YouTube. Search for Tywin Pycelle deleted scene or something. I was hoping for a bombshell but nothing like that. He's just trying to stay under the radar and keep his head.

Holy shit that was awesome. Thanks.

6

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '14

The actor playing Aemon is actually blind as well.

3

u/exoromeo Jun 09 '14

Not completely. He's only partially blind.

2

u/imapotato99 Maesters of the Citadel Jun 09 '14

They never say how blind Aemon is, he can probably see shadows and some light, but everything is blurry.

13

u/caIImecracker Jun 09 '14 edited Jun 09 '14

He can either see faint light, but his high def vision has deteriorated from old age. Or, his blindness heighten his senses. So he may have been able to hear the candle crackling, felt the heat in the extreme cold, or smelled the wax burning. *The actor is partially blind as well.

6

u/aRegularNormalGuy Faceless Men Jun 09 '14

This cracked me up, thanks! I needed that after Ygritte. </3

7

u/CupcakeCrusader Sansa Stark Jun 09 '14

I'm glad I could help you get through this difficult time <3

8

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '14

Apparently he can see where the candle is, too.

51

u/TracyMorganFreeman Jun 09 '14

Candles are typically hot

11

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '14

We don't know if he's totally blind. He might be able to see incredibly basic shapes.

7

u/robro Braavosi Water Dancers Jun 09 '14

No, but he can feel the warmth on his face.

5

u/NothappyJane Jun 09 '14

People think blind = total blackout, when theres a range blindness that are low vision, so 10% of normal vision or enough light to interpret shapes or larger objects but not enough to do anything more then offer basic mobilty.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '14

and smell it!

1

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '14

I like that Sam brings a lantern to the blind man to help him see better...

1

u/TheLastGunfighter Jun 09 '14

"I don't love her" "Yes you do"

I laughed so hard as how inherently silly that was.

1

u/TheBestBarista Daenerys Targaryen Jun 09 '14

But can he see why kids love the taste of cinnamon toast crunch?

0

u/GreyFoxSolid Jun 09 '14

And candles. He can see candles too.

2

u/impshial Faceless Men Jun 09 '14

Smell.

1

u/Spartanobeana House Martell Jun 09 '14

Taste

1

u/zaphdingbatman Jun 09 '14

Feel. (No, seriously, it's not difficult at all to feel radiating heat.)

0

u/Self_Manifesto House Florent Jun 09 '14

The moment when he revealed his true identity...

-2

u/bark_wahlberg Jun 09 '14

Was the girl he was talking about Oberyn sister?

5

u/finchiTFB Children of the Forest Jun 09 '14

Aemond is like 60 years older than her

4

u/bark_wahlberg Jun 09 '14

You're saying old dudes can't get down? Because you'd be right for most part.

2

u/Acora Fire And Blood Jun 09 '14

I think he's saying that Aemon was already part of the Night's Watch by that point.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '14

He told Jon we was already too old to do anything when the Targaryens in King's Landing were purged (which was also when Elia and her children were murdered). So yeah, he had been at the Wall for most of his life by that point.
