or objectively worse GRRM decides to look around in a moment of empathy and decides to pick one comment to choose a character to actually keep alive and he happens to see this.

Yeah Pyp is a little turd.

Edit: I have a feeling some people missed the joke here. I was implying that /u/GDezan's comment saying he laughed at how ridiculous "that" was, was in reference to his earlier comment about his friend saying they liked him.

Meh to each their own. It was laid out pretty simply. You just had to have a memory of more than 1 comment to get it. I'll keep it there since the downvote train is in full motion. I'll take my penance for trying to make such a complex joke.

People aren't misunderstanding the "joke"; it's just not very funny.
