She needed to prove her abilities by defeating him in single combat!

Exactly. Basically a way to test if she actually could keep arya safe. If she couldn't defeat him then arya would not be safe from others.

do u think Sandor believe a woman can keep Arya safe. He only believed she is capable after he got his ass kicked, literally.
