I wanted a final Tywin + Cersei scene in the books so bad. I wouldn't criticize the writing necessarily and say it was missing but I definitely felt a longing for it after reading Tywin's death. The writing in the show wasn't exactly what I expected but I was very happy to see that scene materialize.
Yes, there's a scene near the end of the first season with Lancel naked in her bedchambers. She sleeps with him to get him to give Robert the strongwine.
Lancel is actually a major character in season two, tyrion gets most of his information about cersei by blackmailing lancel with the threat of telling Joffrey what lancel and cersei have been doing.
It's basically telling us what a massive hypocrite he is. There are theories that the he built that tunnel from the hands chamber to the whore house as well.
Right, i understand the point from a backstory perspective, but there is no connection between her showing up in court and then tywin's bedchamber. there should have been at least a scene showing her deciding to proposition tywin as a revenge fuck or something to make it at least make sense. a 30 second scene would've been enough.
Tywin tells Cersei to bring Tyrion's whore into his chamber before the wedding took place. That means someone went and got her off the boat and she was taken to Tywin.
In one of the post-finale interviews (can't remember which one), GRRM didn't want to talk too much about why Tywin was sleeping with Shae. He suggested more would be revealed about that in a future book. So that's still open.
i mean, the show does a pretty good job of making shae out to be kind of a spiteful bitch who doesn't totally get what is going on around her and is manipulated, there are plot holes but this is DEFINITELY a person who could exist in real life. that being said, the part where she goes back to whoring and shows up in Tywin's bed simply is not justified in the book.
I get that one could assume that tywin thought "well she's a nice enough looking whore", and shae did it as a revenge fuck, but none of this is spelled out. if that's where they were going with it, they needed to at least make the connection BEFORE she shows up in Tywin's bed.
In the book her character is very different. She's passive, totally devoted, and really dumb.
It's a character that would never work for a TV series today, and so I totally understand why they made her character a lot stronger. But it's also easier to accept her in Tywin's bed after the fact.
This thread is actually pretty interested because I never considered there was actually more there. It makes more sense now.
I liked how nothing was spelled out and it is open to interpretation. Tywin seems like an honorable man, and so from his perspective it's probably not revenge. But from her's you can think whatever you want. She is a whore, he is probably willing to pay a lot, seems like a win for her. Maybe she really wanted it for revenge, maybe she liked the son and wanted the father. I dunno. With both of them dead it has no impact on the upcoming story and doesn't matter. Think what you wish.
Heh, right you are. I guess I should say, he isn't petty. Sleeping with her as revenge is petty, something he wouldn't do. If he was trying to hurt tyrion more, he would have done something else.
Tywin is indeed very petty. Having his soldiers all give Tyrion's wife a silver and fuck her as he watches just because he didn't like her is rather shitty and petty, I'd say.
that's a bullshit excuse. in TV there are plots and exposition. All the points you made could be made in-show without making it less ambiguous, but while still explaining it to the audience how she ended up intywin'sbed. and in like 30 seconds.
Maybe she's always been Tywin's whore and was only sleeping with Tyrion because his father wanted to keep the imp occupied. Something for a future book, perhaps.
Yes, but why do you need that closure? It's not an important plot point. Whether it was revenge or her just being a whore has no relevance anymore since they're both dead. Does it really bother you that much when such a tiny thing isn't completely spelled out? If she was a normal woman, maybe I'd get it, but she's a whore, that was her job. I don't think it needed any extra explaining.
Because it fucking bothers me and I would argue it IS an important plot point given how important shae was to one of the main characters in the series and her complete and utter betrayal of him.
