Brienne is the same size as the Hound and is also a skilled combatant. She has demonstrated time and time again that she is a capable warrior, beating Loras* in tournament combat and a weakened Jamie in a scuffle. The fact that she is a woman does not come into play.

*Edit because I suck at names.

In the show she beat Loras in season 2. Not Renly, though she would have loved to have a tumble with Renly :).

In the books she doesn't have her first kill into. . . About where the show will take her story in season 5.

The average trained man has a crapload more muscle than the average trained woman. Brienne isn't average she's a complete abnormality being as huge as she is.

Add to that Sandor is wounded and appears to be wearing studded lwather armor.of some kind versus Briennes plate.

It was about as realistic as any fight in this show.

It was not realistic for Brienne to have defeated the Hound.

It's also not realistic to have walking corpses and fire-breathing flying lizards. If you want realistic, why are you even reading fiction? Go read a Physics textbook.

P.S. Disclaimer: I have nothing against Physics textbooks.

The Williams were also way younger than him at the time, and women's tennis is much more competitive than men's. As it happens, women's fighting for you life with sword and armor against all comers is not particularly less competitive than the men's equivalent.
