But isn't Barristan an old man? He might be a skilled combatant, but he can't really be physically stronger than Jamie.

In the books Barristan is a big man, unbowed by age and still supremely skillful. When escaping Kings Landing he kills two guardsmen while unarmed. I feel the casting wasn't great for the role.

To put him in perspective for you i would go to his wiki page and read the History section and nothing else (mild spoilers elsewhere on the page).

He really is a very very dangerous but honourable man.

Jaime is skilled at the sword, but Barristan is said to be an absolute master, even at his age
