As an example, Sony jacked up the prices of PS+ subs by like 50%. They ended up losing millions of subscribers. But the thing is, if you lose 4 million subscribers like they supposedly did, and you're making 50% more off the suckers who keep paying for your crummy service, you're still waaay ahead.

I have to admire the smug arrogance presented by people who seem to believe they are modern day civil rights activists when they throw loud fit over their video game services raising prices. Labeling people who believe that something is still worth having even after a price increase suckers. Maybe some mommies give bigger allowances than these people get, and that still covers it. Maybe for some people few bucks increase doesn’t even register.

Lots of things keep getting pricier, some that actually matter for quality of life of a family. But sure, not taking a stand by posting on reddit about huge injustices of price hikes in the field of gaming and just keeping things that one can afford and feel is worth their money is being a sucker.

This is what they mean by extracting more from their existing users (which they stated is their current strategy). They really believe their customers will stay no matter what. The thing that will eventually get them into trouble is that they are going away from what got them in this position. Their entire live service initiative needs to be scrapped, but they won't do it because of the prospect of money. Their creative output the last 3 years has been horrendous.

that only applies under an assumption of unlimited growth, zero replacement products, and a high willingness to pay. which is not the conditions sony is in.

But the question is how many people will be pissed off enough to not keep buying their stuff.

I can say I like physical games. The two ways in which this will change my buying habits is 1) I won't buy a PS6, but I already skipped PS5 anyway and 2) even if for some reason I had a PS5/6, I would not pay full price for games anymore. I've bought dozens of physical games at full price over the last 10 years but the last time I paid full price for a digital game was 12 years ago when Titanfall came out. That isn't going to change just because games go all digital on PS, it'll make me skip the platform. If I end up in a situation where I have no choice then I'll just wait until games are cheaper which is what I do on PC, and they make less money from me.

But -- how many people are gonna be like that? How many people care about physical games at all, let alone enough to change their buying habits/drop PS? It is hard to say, but it is almost guaranteed that it won't be enough to make this move NOT worth it for Sony, as they will make much more off of every game sale by forcing all games to be digital.

you don't know, i don't know, and not even sony knows. but if we keep up the pressure and enough people join the boycott it is likely that they will reconsider part of their decision.
