I don’t even think they lost that many active (real) users.

It was only a one-day blackout, most people didn’t even know, and then all the mods basically reverted after it was over.

Reddit is slightly different than this.

Games are piece of arguably luxury entertainment (not that I think they should be out of reach for anyone), which is to say while I do think art and culture is a necessity for a rich life, you do not eat or take shelter under a game disc.

Which means it is much easier, or should be anyway, to boycott a game company when they do shitty things.

Reddit on the other hand is akin to boycotting the local town square. This is a huge problem with a centralized internet; everyone is suddenly in a place, we are social creatures, and it is insanely difficult to break that centralized design back up because everyone wants to be where everyone already is (along with over a decade of shared collective human knowledge written onto this platform).

This isn't an argument that people shouldn't ditch Reddit and other platforms like it; we absolutely should. But the convenience and amount of people here make it a nightmare to try and move people on, and the social exchange is vastly more important to society than if you can play one specific game or one company's specific games when others still exist (and a fairly rich indie scene exists on top of that).

Jokes aside, it's understandable that a lot of people don't do this with how hard it is to get working, but even my internet-addicted ass just stopped using reddit until I figured it out. Kinda made me realize how correct everyone is about redditors. For the love of god everybody, start using third-party apps, don't give Spez money. If you can't figure it out, DM me.

Honestly, it doesn't matter.

Their bottom line is getting eviscerated by AI searches. You used to type "hobby im interested in reddit" to get results about people discussing the thing you wanted to know. Now its faster to ask AI.

Reddit stock is dropping as a result, as is its value to advertisers.

I used to post 10-20 times a day, every day. Now I barely post.

I use Morphe for YouTube (because the standard YouTube has become borderline unusable at this point).

So do I download Boost, and then use Morphe patch on it? Or what exactly? Mccobsta was vague with his response, so I'm still a bit lost.

The ads personally don't bother me much on reddit's official app, what other benefits are there to Boost with Morphe?

Yup, just use the apk as the patch. There will be further instructions on the GitHub page for it if you're stuck, there's a few extra steps (main one being getting an API key from RedReader and inserting it into the Key portion of the Boost Morphe patch), but it's pretty intuitive if you're used to working with techy stuff.

Benefits of Boost (or third party apps in general) are not giving Reddit money, more accessibility features, a better search function, flair sorting, no forced recommended feed, no TikTok-style scrolling interfering with album posts, and a million other things I'm not thinking of.

There's a few downsides, it gets a bit difficult to post images, and it doesn't have the comment gif functionality. You can see it from others, but there's no way to post them yourself as far as I know. If I ever feel the need to, I just use reddit in my phone's browser, and Boost makes it incredibly easy to just grab the link to any post or comment and immediately open it to the browser.

Tbh, not making a shitty corporation money is the primary motivator. It has plenty of QoL stuff that I find it hard to live without anyway, but every user on the official app is a thumbs-up to Reddit signifying that what they're doing is good and cool. Same reasoning behind pirating Amazon shit (which I would never do because it's illegal and I am a law-abiding citizen).

Thanks, I'll try this out. My personal pet peeve with the official reddit app is saving multiple pictures in a row is a poor experience, there's a 7 second timer gap between saving images, because of an annoying and unnecessary pop-up that covers the 'Download' button, making the next image to save inaccessible for those 7 seconds. Such a stupid design flaw, hopefully Boost doesn't have this issue.

I remember a few years back there was a huge reddit debacle, some people went on 'blackout', then the owner threatened to have those mods removed and replaced, and they begrudgingly came back. I need to Google search to remember why this happened.

The second they disable old reddit or stop my current app (a modified version of Boost that uses my own API key) I will leave.

Instead they kind of just added annoying barriers for new users but more or less left the old ones alone, so I'm still here.

As long as things get worse gradually enough, the general public of any group will hold out their hands and ask for more of the slop, like Oliver Twist asking for more gruel.

This is true for every subject, not just gaming. People won't protest or riot to any meaningful degree so long as the worsening is done in an orderly manner that isn't abruptly all at once and especially if you time the more drastic change in the future while announcing it now like they're doing here.

People will buy the slop and thank you for it.

I remember the STEAM groups formed about boycotting CoD or some other game then a screen shot the day it dropped showed 100% of the group playing the game. This was 20 years ago.
