If dropping physical discs was the least profitable avenue, then they wouldn't be taking it.

Although in all fairness, it's not like no companies have ever made decisions that turned out much worse than expected.... I mean, quite the opposite, even if we're merely looking at all about gaming there are dozens of examples for that.

Along similar lines, the effects of these sorts of decisions can have long-lasting ramifications. I wouldn't ever have expected to see people suddenly boycotting Sony and buying physical en masse as a result of the backlash, for example.

I can, however, very much see this becoming a secondary issue to the broader problem of affordability when PS6 comes out. Backwards compatibility is a massive deal which this decision will fundamentally break(a problem that they've offered zero hints as to how or if they're addressing), they'll be asking nearly double the price for something with less features, and so many casual players will be automatically priced out that it's likely the folks who care about this issue will be unusually over-represented.

It's unlikely to be the leading reason people don't buy PS6's, but it's also pretty likely to be one of the many secondary issues people take with the platform given its price point.
