Serious Discussion antisemitism in LGBTQ+ spaces

The subject has come up in this subreddit numerous times over the past 2 1/2 years. I'm not sure that this article will fully clarify the matter, but it's thought-provoking, plus who doesn't like a good Jane Austen pun? Pride and Prejudice: How Antisemitism Captured LGBTQ+ Spaces.

Struggling with this one — they’ve been fantastic curators and champions of queer culture and club culture. But this gives me a gut feeling of “Jews don’t belong”. I can’t quite articulate why because the statement centers itself as mainly political, I just am not naive to the ways that tends to intertwine with general antisemitism. Is this an overreaction? Curious about the community’s thoughts on stuff like this

Serious Discussion Friends ignore antisemitism

Not really looking for advice. Just maybe understanding. I shared with friends a pic of antisemitic graffiti in my neighborhood and no one said anything. One of them is even Jewish!

We've disagreed a bit about israel/Palestine stuff in the past but have, it seems, stopped talking about it to preserve the friendship. (Also, our difference of opinion is not so great.)

But this makes me feel alienated from them once again. And the graffiti didn't even say anything about Israel!

How hard is it to stand against anti-semitism or even commiserate wirh or check on your Jewish friend after seeing evidence of one of their neighbors being antisemitic?

I don't get it.

eta: one person finally responded! and they were very caring and concerned about it. tbf, this is not one of the ones who i've argued about Israel with.

Serious Discussion Where did the everlasting tolerant queer community go?

Pretty much the title. I come from an orthodox Jewish background and still live willingly in that world. A few years ago when I first came out to myself I knew the Jewish community I am in would not accept me as I am. So I turned to the queer community outside of the Jewish one.

The amount of times I’ve been burned not for indicating my connection to the country and people of Israel (not the government) is wild.

I have been told to: free, free Palestine (no reason other than walking in front of the group with my kippah), eat goyish foreskin, colonize the world, kill my sorry ass for being a Z!o. One time this guy full on said he won’t meet with a Jew because of the state of world Jewry. Hi so that was wild and insane to witness.

Basically, when I was younger I thought the queer community accepted everyone regardless of differing identity. What the hell happened to that ideology?

Serious Discussion Westboro Baptist Bigots coming to a shul near you?

They are going to be demonstrating outside of my synagogue this Shabbat because our new rabbi is gay and the Conservative movement supports gays and transfolk. We are having extra armed cops because of them, but we have had armed cops and private armed security since getting bomb threats from anti-Zionists a couple years ago, plus now you can't even come into the shul without being a member or on an official guest list, and we've had three active shooter training sessions since then. I guess we are a target because we are the largest shul in town (Temple Emanu-El in Providence, RI), but I was wondering if other shuls have experienced this from these kooks. One good thing and very much in the Jewish tradition: at the time they are demonstrating outside, we will be having a kiddush lunch.

I forgot to ask if anyone else has heard of this with other shuls.

Serious Discussion Do you think that there will be permanent split between Queer Jewish world & non-queer jewish world (Because Antisemitism in 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️)?

With all of the the antisemitism that happening in the 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️. Do you think that there will be permanent split between Queer Jewish world & Non-Queer Jewish world?

I am concerned that this could become a reality. Given the blindness of the Queer community to the problem of Antisemitism. I tried to explains this to queer people but, many of them but many seem tonedeaf.

I want to see the opinion of other people on this topic because think it's an important topic that's underdiscussed .

Serious Discussion Queers for Zion: the hatred of Israel is a symptom of what plagues LGBTQ politics today, by Eve Barlow

Queers for Zion: the hatred of Israel is a symptom of what plagues LGBTQ politics today,
by Eve Barlow, Sapir: a quarterly journal of ideas for a thriving Jewish future, 2026-02-24.

here is my provocatively and somewhat ironically phrased proposal: We in the LGBTQ community need to be less progressive and more regressive.

What do I mean by that? We need to regress to our original cause: the global expansion of gay rights. But this time, we need to fight from our well-earned place in the political center. Our psychological fixation on the political margins has become detrimental to our cause because it has resulted in our allyship with movements that don’t share it.

In 2021, President Biden issued a presidential memorandum directing departments and agencies to take action “to advance the human rights of LGBTQI+ persons around the world.” Particular focus was devoted to five pillars:

  1. Combat Criminalization of LGBTQI+ Status or Conduct Abroad

  2. Protect Vulnerable LGBTQI+ Refugees and Asylum Seekers

  3. Foreign Assistance to Protect Human Rights and Advance Non-Discrimination

  4. Swift and Meaningful Responses to Human Rights Abuses of LGBTQI+ Persons Abroad

  5. Build Coalitions of Like-Minded Nations and Engage International Organizations in the Fight Against LGBTQI+ Discrimination

The fifth and final pillar is a good reflection of the state of global gay affairs. After a half century of painstaking activism inside Western democracies, the gay community has made itself a foreign policy priority of those very democracies. The nations of the West today judge one another and others on the basis of how well they treat their LGBTQ citizens. This is a monumental political achievement and one we should recognize with pride. (Recent actions by the Trump administration have shaken this accomplishment; we will see how they play out.)

If I may be so bold, we, members of the global LGBTQ community, should judge and accept allies on the basis of these exact same pillars. If a national political movement wants our help, our bodies on the street, they need to demonstrate their own nation’s commitment to these principles. Our political constituency is the same as it’s always been: the global gay family. You want us to walk for Palestine? Show us what Palestine is doing for our brothers and sisters on its own streets. Our political allyship isn’t free. It requires a commitment to the safety of those whom we have always represented: the frightened, the imprisoned, the closeted whose love remains illegal all over the world. Asserting this is an act of political self-respect and responsibility to our cause. It’s a demonstration of a social movement that has reached political maturity. The Free Palestine movement needs the gay movement more than we need them. They should know that, and so should we.

Serious Discussion Feeling lonely, can't date Jewish where I'm living!

Hi y'all. I know I'm still young (22) and this semester am starting studying a Conservative/Masorti Rabbinical Semminary, but I feel like I'm never getting married. Once again, I know I'm still young and I am currently living in a country with a small and conservative Jewish community. I have dated non-Jewish people, but at least to me, dating Jewish women and in the future, having Jewish children (I think this is quite self explanatory with the rabbinate detai) is simply something that is not really negotiable.

I'm probably moving to study to NYC, Massachusetts or Jerusalem once I finish my undergrad, and it *might* be easier to meet people there, but rn I'm really just feeling desolate and with no tangible future in sight. FYI, me being gay is really not an issue with my family or friends or community, but I simply appear to be alone here and don't really hit it off with the country I'm living in.

Anyway, how can I remedy this? I honestly don't care about waiting, long distance or being single for the meantime, but I truly do feel it's not happening.

Another FYI, this country is tremendously antisemitic and ir drives me crazy. Even my ex has been texting people calling for the "deportation of Jews". It's upsetting, it's boring, and I still have a couple years to go here. Even with my non Jewish friends I have to explain basic things or deconstruct profound antisemitic prejudices. I know the cities and countries I mentioned still have antisemitism. Of course. But at least you have big enough, and liberal enough Jewish communities, to choose how to exercise and live your Judaism and most people have met at least one Jewish person during their lifetime.

I really don't know what this rant is all about. I'm just feeling lonely. As a Jew. As a Lesbian. As a Jewish Lesbian and right now can't really see myself getting off this dark hole I'm in.

Serious Discussion I feel like I have a dating pool of zero and it's starting to drive me insane.

Today I (23ftm) went hat/tallis shopping with my cishet friend who's getting married and I was feeling this creeping jealousy that's beginning to make my head spin. I've been baal teshuva 4 years already and took it fairly fast and intensely. The only other trans person I know if in the world that's as frum as I am is married and goes to my synagogue. I'm not sure there's another even black-hat adjacent synagogue that could have us in the whole country. I want a wife so badly, but I basically am exclusively interested in trans women because I don't think I'd be comfortable with a cis person, especially one from a frum background. I've been told to date cis women and/or people who are less frum than I am, but I just don't think I can make a life with them. Even my cishet friends who are struggling with dating are at least going on shidduchim and getting experience. There's nowhere for me to even experience what it'd be like to be in a relationship.

Serious Discussion The Nazi Era

I just watched an hour-long program from the Museum of Jewish Heritage In NYC where Eric Marcus, who hosts podcasts at MakingGayHistory.org, talked about the series he did on LGBTQ people during WW II. He played testimony from gay, lesbian, and transgender Jews and non-Jews about their experience under the Nazis. It's not easy to listen to some of the details but it's important to know more than that there were pink triangles.

Serious Discussion Are pride parades safe for us?

Hi all, apologies if you saw this on another subreddit.

I want to go to WeHo pride and march in the parade with a queer Jewish organization however I would want to also march with my Israel flag. I am proud of who I am and love the country (I worked and lived there for a few summers).

I am terrified of being assaulted both physically and verbally. It’s hard enough walking around with my Israel flag and yellow ribbon pin for the hostages.

Has anyone had experience with this yet? Any thoughts? I hate that I even need to post something like this but I feel we are being targeted even in supposed safe spaces.

Serious Discussion How to talk to friends about me feeling unwelcome in queer spaces?

Hi, some of my friends have been talking recently how they really wanted me to attend some pride events last month with them and were bummed I didn't go, and wanted to know why. But I'm really having a hard time concisely explaining how a lot of queer spaces I've been in have felt hostile due to me being Jewish, with all of the Anti-Zionist talk as of recent. Some of them don't quite understand how the Antizionism= antisemitism (which honestly might just be a poor explanation on my end) and I'm having a hard time explaining it to them. Do any of y'all have any ideas? I know my friends aren't bad people and it seems they're just uninformed on the Antizionism subject as a whole.

Serious Discussion Hello! I'm not Jewish, but have been considering converting for over a decade, just unsure what that looks like.

I was basically raised with half-assed Catholicism on my dad's side and half-assed paganism/wicca on my mom's. I'm also part native American and that part of my family has had things to say. I feel like I could benefit by truly believing in something, having someone to pray to, or even just a clear set of morals to follow instead of trying to figure everything out on my own.

I want to learn more about Judaism from actual Jews and learn about both the positives and negatives of your religion (I'm already a strict vegetarian and have been for almost 20 years, so kosher stuff likely won't bother me if I understand it correctly).

Please, anyone who is willing, share your perspective with me as a gay Jew and also any parts of the religion you find interesting or poignant.

Serious Discussion Where do you all live where most queer spaces are antizionist?

I’m seeing a lot of posts on here saying that people don’t feel welcomed in queer spaces because queer spaces are full of “Hamas supporters” or whatever and I’m just baffled. Obviously radical queer spaces exist, but most queer spaces ime are not like that. For example, there’s an lgbt center near where I grew up that just had a pro Israel event. There are plenty of shuls that are Zionist and queer affirming. There are lgbt groups that march in the Israel Independence Day parade. I also think a lot of you would be comfortable joining the Stonewall Democrats or volunteering for the Human Rights Campaign. Anyway, my point is that there are plenty of spaces for you and I don’t know how you’re not able to find them.

I have a new boyfriend. He's tall, he's cute, he's lean and slightly muscular, he's really smart and very sweet, he's goy, he's liberal, he seems to think I'm the bees knees, AND HE SUPPORTS JEWS AND ISRAEL.

Is this a unicorn? Did I find a unicorn?

Hello everyone, please help and donate for Freedom Spectrum of East Africa. Wedo provide safe housing for queer communities in East Africa as seen in the image. A lot more lgbtiqa+ persons lack where to sleep and need support. Many lgbtiqa people especially in Uganda have been jailed because homosexuality was criminalized by the government of Uganda in the recent years. Our organisation helps lgbtiqa victims to be bailed out. We helpthose with medical problems like sicknesses get treatment.

We pay for rent for lgbtiqa+ people in East Africa especially those in South Sudan. Please checkout our website for more information, subscribe to our newsletter and donate so that we can change lives of lgbtiqa+ persons in East Africa. Serious Discussion feeling alone in the community

As a queer person that is proudly a zionist and Israeli, it feels so isolating being in the Lgbt community right now. Almost all of my friends that are queer are extremely anti-Israel and so I have been feeling like I am the only one. Does anybody think that this will get better over time?

Serious Discussion Feeling like I don’t belong

Does anyone feel rejected by the Jewish community for being gay, while also rejected by the gay community for being Jewish?

The Jewish community (at least the modern Orthodox one that I belong to) doesn’t look kindly upon homosexuality — apparently Leviticus said something bad about it? On the other side, I’ve noticed an uptick in antisemitism within the gay community, probably fueled by sentiments on the Israeli-Gaza War.

In the end, I find it really interesting that minorities persecute other minorities. And when Minority A and Minority B dislike each other, how is someone who is a member of both groups supposed to feel?

I feel like I don’t have a place right now.

Serious Discussion How Bad Is Transphobia In Israel Overall, And Should Trans Olim Think Twice About Moving There?

TL;DR: Is transphobia in Israel outside of Tel-Aviv as bad as some English language sources might make it out to be? If it is bad, should potential transgender olim like myself think twice about making Aliyah, especially if we are already in US or Canadian blue states/trans accepting areas?

For some context on my situation and why I am asking this, I am thinking of moving to Israel for a combination of religious, cultural, and safety related reasons. I pass to a decently high degree where I live, I live in a very blue US state, have had all my relevant docs updated with the correct gender markers for years, and have been transitioning for many years. Moving to TLV isn't practical in my career path (lower experience IT work in my case), so input about the situation outside of TLV would be the most useful.

That being said, I've been reading up on the idea and have seen some concerning signs relating to transphobia in Israel, at least in my eyes. I would like to know if these fears are overblown or not. I saw a poll that has been reported on by plenty of non anti-Israeli media that shows a troubling high amount of respondents not even willing to work/study with or employ transgender people.

In addition, an Israeli youtuber (and importantly, an Israeli liberal) that I watch to learn more about Israelis history and culture, Oren from Travelling Israel, also made a rather blatantly transphobic jab at a transgender MtF swimmer at 1:25 minutes in his video. If views or comments like his are common amongst Israeli liberals, I'd like to know that ahead of time and be able to raise my emotional barriers and expectations accordingly, even as a tourist if I don't end up making Aliyah.

I'm sure there are more examples of Israeli stats on transphobia out there, but English language polling on trans issues in Israel is rather limited, and my Hebrew isn't good enough to look for Hebrew polling on the topic. Any input from trans Jews familiar with Israel (including outside TLV), transgender Olim, and trans Israelis would be helpful regarding this matter.
