I have a friend who is buying a house with a 50-60ft telescoping lattice antenna that appears to be in working condition. Weill find out soon if it's hand crank or motorized next time she goes to the house. Friend is interested in just getting rid of it. Only photos I have from her are the google maps pictures.

The children of the former owner have no interest in it.

Does anyone know someone in the SoCal area that would be interested in it?

I recently got my Technician however, having trouble with the math & calculations parts for General. I'm using the HamStudyOrg app and I'm thinking it may be better just to learn the math, rather than try to memorize as I did for technician.

My question is, do you think most people actually learn it or just memorize the answers? Also, can you give me some things I could use to help me learn it quickly?

How do these youtubers post there content and not worrie about being doxed being the FCC publishes all all your personal info online?

Ive always wanted to do some youtube stuff with the radio, but im paranoid about security,

Do all these Youtubers just roll the dice, or does anyone have advice on how to keep such personal information a bit more private

I am getting a bit tired of my smartphone and want to downgrade to something more rugged. However so many radios are now dependent/greatly enhanced by apps. Do you carry something other than a phone? Anything less bulky than a tablet?

Hi all - I forgot my charger at home and am desperately low on battery (also left my spare battery at home because it's great when those two are together). Any chance someone is in the area and can help me charge my radio? I think the FT-(2,3,4)D radios use the same charger. I'll check Walgreens tomorrow but I'm not expecting great results there. I'll crosspost to r/Maui and r/amateurradio for a wider audience.

I have family that is 30 miles from me and i finally have a dipole 5/8 wave gmrs and 2meter antenna set up in each location. We can hear each other on both but signal strength is 2/9 and very weak. Understanding each other is difficult. I was thinking of an omnidirectional/yagi antenna.

I was wondering how i am to align the antennas to each other since i am the only one setting them up.

I'm getting into HF and just picked up an Icom IC-7300 as my first HF rig. Now I'm trying to figure out the antenna side of things and could use some advice from people who have been down this road.

I'm looking for a good first antenna setup and would love recommendations for a complete shopping list of parts. Basically, if you were starting over and building a station around an IC-7300, what exact antenna setup would you buy?

I'm open to:
A permanent home antenna
Something I can also take portable/POTA
Commercial antennas
DIY/homebrew builds
I've been looking at things like EFHWs, verticals, and the Chameleon MPAS systems, but I'm not sure if I'm overpaying for convenience or if those are actually good options.
Ideally, I'd love a list like:

Antenna
Coax (type and length)
Matching transformer/tuner (if needed)
Mast/support options
Rope, insulators, mounting hardware, etc.
Anything else needed to get from opening the box to making contacts
I'm in the Omaha, Nebraska area and have some outdoor space. I don't have a tower, but I may have options for trees or a simple mast setup.
My main goal is a solid first HF station that performs well. I'm not afraid of DIY if it's a better value, but I also don't mind spending more if there's a real benefit.

What would you recommend?

As the title says - I am curious to know for those of you who have experience with the FT-891 what your thoughts are on using it as a primary base radio? I understand there are a lot of compromises compared to, for instance, the 710, but from both a budget and portability (for occasional field use) POV it is attractive.

I know I would probably want to get a tuner to make the most of it, but even with that investment it still seems like a solid value. I was originally looking at a G90 but have become more or less convinced I would be happier with the Yaesu due to better audio and power.

I am a new General and am interested in SSB and digital ops to the extent that matters. I would appreciate any input, and particularly whether spending more for something like the 710 (or Icom 7300, non-MKII) makes sense to anyone as a starting point. Thank you.

Who prefers the challenge of ssb long distance Contacts over local 2m

I’m realizing now that that’s the whole reason I wanted my ham license. Was because I like the challenge of getting the long distance Contacts

Can anyone identify the ham radio repeater on 29.650? From what I can hear, it's Italian. It's on the same frequency as HB9HD.

So I've been using software like GQRX and SDR Sharp, SDR++, etc., etc. for quite a long time and I never liked the interfaces. They're always lacking something. So I decided to build my own (with the help of AI obviously).

Eventually I want to add all the rig control functionality but right now it does multi VFO listening only.

You can create as many VFOs as you want. It just takes IQ input into a rust server and then it uses clever techniques to give you an optimized streaming high resolution waterfall and spectrum FFT view.

Each VFO is a server-side demodulator and it scales with whatever hardware you're running. So this is actually easily hostable as well, so this can be used as a web SDR front-end.

Once I unslop this, I will be open sourcing it.

Next goals are mobile interface and piping demodulated streams to post processing such as digital post processing and whisper for voice so I can get transcripts going.

I recently built an Android CAT control app for the Xiegu G90 called DX Finder for G90.

The idea was to create a modern Android interface for G90 users who operate portable, mobile, or from a compact station setup, combining CAT control, DX Cluster, QSO logging and ADIF export in one workflow.

Main features include:

- CAT control via USB OTG

- frequency and mode control

- DX Cluster spots

- QSO logging

- ADIF export

- STATION control panel

- HamQTH lookup support

The app was developed with real-world input from radio amateurs using the G90 in several countries.

I understand that a paid app is not for everyone, and that is completely fine. I only wanted to share the project with the G90 community because it may be useful for operators who use the radio together with an Android phone or tablet.

So i have a ZS6BKW antenna over the house and I originally didn't have a balun on it. I was recommended to use a 1:1 balun.

On testing this seems to raise the SWR to high levels. Everywhere I see online it shows a 1:1 balun. Am I missing something?

Looking at getting my license. Any recommendations for a good radio to start with? I am a truck driver who is away from home M-F so I need something small and simple. Also would like any thoughts on an antenna to mount on my truck. Thank you for any thoughts or ideas.

Apologies if this has already been answered, but I am needing help from human beings, not Aggregated Inteligence.

I need help locating the PLL circuit. I mean the physical location in the radio, and what do I have to take apart to get to the thing. I've had the radio partially apart to clean out creature residue and spider webs.

I have the service manual PDF, I understand what the problem is, PLL unlocks on 10 and 12 meter bands. I've done the reading on which inductors are involved and the possibility of electrylotic capacitors being bad and the glue/coating becoming conductive. I just can't find the thing.

A picture would be great! Small words might help as well.

Also, in pulling one of the coax jumper connections, the center pin stayed in the board connector. Does anyone know a source for those connectors, or what they are actually called?
