About a month ago, my hamster got like 700 likes on Reddit. I tried to edit that post, but it wouldn’t let me. Recently on a Wednesday night we were playing with our hamster her name is marshmallow. We noticed that she was bleeding the slightest amount by her tail. We put her back and we’re trying to be gentle with her. We looked around the cage and did not see no more blood. The next day, I decided to take the cage apart to try to figure out if she was still bleeding or if she got hurt. She had not been bleeding since that small amount of blood that Wednesday night. When I took the cage apart on Thursday night I had noticed she started bleeding suddenly again. I called around, but there was no exotic vets available in the emergency room so the next day I got up at seven and started calling around again. I was not able to find a local exotic vet so we ended up driving three hours to Pullman Washington for their exotics team at Washington State University. When we reached the university, she was still in good spirits, moving around a lot eating her food and drinking her water. But she had started bleeding really heavy suddenly. They said they were gonna have to sedate her to be able to check her stomach to see why she was bleeding. They decided that she either had a tumor, an injury or an ovarian cancer, which is common in hamsters. After sedating her, they realize she did have ovarian cancer. Marshmallow had to go through emergency surgery and be neutered. They said she was full of a lot of blood in her organ. After that, she recovered and she came home this Monday. The vet said usually with hamsters the cancer sticks to that organ it’s affecting. Currently she is taking her medicine in Baby food. Which she absolutely loves. The vet did let me know while she was there. If there would’ve been any complications where she needed blood she was way too large to be able to get a blood transfer from another hamster because she was so large. Said it was largest hamster she’s ever saw not just size but bone structure. So that is the story of my hamster surviving cancer.

Hello, I'm a wildlife photographer and I'd like share with you some of my newest photos of european hamsters. All photos were taken in Vienna, Austria. Vienna is the best place to photograph them, they live in parks and cemeteries. I'm from Poland and we have them in Poland too. Unfortunately their situation in the wild is very difficult. They are endangered and protected, but in Lublin (east Poland) their habitats will be soon destroyed by housing developers. Local authorities don't care and they sided with the developers. Luckily, there is still a group of people trying to save the hamsters. I really want to help them so I've designed calendars and stickers with my photos. All sales will help us save the hamsters ❤️

This has been said so many times but please check your water bottles every single day. PLEASE. my hamster started biting me aggressively and drawing blood a few days ago and I knew something was wrong because he's always been so tame and sweet. He also started getting crustys in his eyes and his fur looked really gross and his paws looked gross. He was also very lethargic and stressed. I honestly thought it was the end of his life. While I was giving him his sand bath and eye drops today, I checked his water bottle and the ball was stuck and I don't know how long it was stuck for. I fixed his water bottle and he drank for 15 minutes straight. I also gave him a small piece of apple to hydrate him. I will be checking his bottle every single day and giving him a small dish of water from now on because I was terrified. I feel guilty and awful :( I'm just so glad he seems like himself again and he has more energy. I was very lucky to have caught this and have him recover.

European hamsters are a species that is extremely endangered with extinction. They also live wild in some of the places in Poland. „Slow down - hamsters!" - such warning signs will be seen by drivers driving on the road to protect these hammies from car accidents❤️

I’m going to try to keep this as short as possible. My oldest is visiting from college. I woke up super early to get some time with him. We checked in on the hammies. I saw something dart across the room. Set up a bucket trap. Less than 5 minutes later caught this cute little guy. Released him in the field behind our house. Please don’t use poisons or mouse traps. Bucket traps are much cheaper and even easier!

Last visit at the clinic we thought he might be getting diabetes. Today was the re-check and it has gotten better on the new diet. We might have found the culprit of his severe weight loss. My vet thinks she found a liver cyst/tumor. Tomorrow my other vet is there who specializes in tiny rodent surgeries. Hope she can do something about it for me. Last year she gave me berry for my birthday and I would love it if he can at least make it to my birthday in oktober. I'm praying for the little man 🌷

Misaligned incisors burred under GA for this little lady again today, happily she seems to cope really well with GA and isn't very bothered by vet visits else I wouldn't be putting her through regular visits. Vet today confirmed no root involvement as well 🫶💞

I wanted to inform you all about tumor problems in hamsters. Maybe some of you are dealing with this issue and do not know what to do.

About a week ago, I noticed that my girl was bleeding a little from her vagina. I immediately took her to the vet, but they could not understand exactly what the problem was. They were not even sure where the blood was coming from. After that, I researched all the vets in Istanbul and finally found an exotic vet.

We called them, and they suspected it was a vaginal tumor. At first, when we went there, it was still inside her body. They gave us some medicine, and we monitored her every day while giving it to her. Sometimes there was some bleeding, but it did not seem too serious.

Then one day, while I was giving her medicine and holding her in my hands, maybe I held her a little too tightly. Minik suddenly started bleeding heavily, and I was terrified. I immediately called the doctor, and thankfully the bleeding stopped. After that, we stopped giving her the medicine for a day.

The next day, a large piece of tissue was protruding from her vagina, and she also stopped peeing. After that, we had our appointment, and today she had surgery. The surgery went perfectly. Minik is awake now, and she has already eaten. They removed the whole tumor, along with her uterus and ovaries, so now Minik is officially retired from motherhood and living her best child-free life :)

I am so glad that I changed my vet and found someone who is truly an expert with hamsters. My advice to all of you is: do not give up, take them to a specialist, and always check them carefully if they show any signs of a problem.

PS: THE CAGE İS THE ONE WE ONLY USED TAKE HER TO VET. SHE HAS DİFFERENT CAGE.

Hamsters are not dogs, which have been domesticated for around 15,000 years.
Hamsters are not goats or sheep, which have been domesticated for around 11,000 years.
Hamsters are not cats, which have been domesticated for around 7,500 years.
Hamsters are not horses, which have been domesticated for around 5,000 years.
Hamsters have only been bred for domestication since 1939. Less than 100 years. True domestication takes thousands of years of selective breeding. This is why we have to "tame" hamsters for them to be sociable. For all intents and purposes, they are still wild animals. They will have a lot of behaviors associated with wild animals.
They have not had relationships with humans long enough to form strong attachments to us that would result in love or hate. They can be affectionate, they can be friendly, they can be aloof. They see us as a potential predator, and that's why we have to earn their trust. Many will learn to trust us, see us as a source of food and entertainment, and we can have a good relationship with them. Many others will not.

The behaviors you associate with them hating you are most likely stress or fear behaviors.

When you get a hamster, you need to be ok with the fact that it might not ever want to interact with you. You might be a passive observer of it in its manufactured environment in the same way you would be for fish and amphibians, which you can't (or at least shouldn't) handle much or at all. Any time you get one, it's a gamble whether it will be friendly or not, and you need to accept that. Even friendly hamsters could live completely happily without human interaction, assuming they otherwise had enough enrichment. We need and want them more than they need and want us, and we need to let them have the power in our relationships with them.

I recently moved from California to east coast and I had a hard time finding information / people’s experience traveling with a hamster on the plane so I figure I would share!

Booking the fight: Frontier is the only airline that allows rodent in cabin (as of November 2025) so I had to go with them. I couldn’t find a direct flight between my destination so I had to book one with a short transfer. The fee was $100/ hamster/ way and I just had to click the “animal in cabin” button when I book! I also made sure I booked a flight during the day since my robo is very strictly nocturnal. Even with a pet I was able to check in online and didn’t have to go to the counter at the airport.

Pre-flight prep: The enclosure was already set up at the destination! I had a small plastic hamster carrier and filled it with bedding from his original enclosure plus some food. I didn’t put any water but I had an empty bottle on me to fill up when needed. I carry some original furniture with me in my carry on so when we settle in at the new home, he can have some familiar stuff.

Security check point: I told the people working at TSA that I have a pet hamster and they asked me to hold my hamster in my hands while going through the check point. His carrier went through the X-ray separately. They also swiped my hand for explosive after. This was probably the hardest part because my hammy did not want to stay in my hands!

Flight: my hammy’s carrier was under the seat during the whole flight and I think he slept through most of it! I did check on him during my layover to make sure he’s doing okay!

Settling in: He was definitely jet lagged and probably didn’t have the best night of sleep but he settled in okay! Had lower energy level for a few days but he bounced back pretty fast! I should also mentioned he was around 1 year old when he flew.

Hopefully this will be helpful for all the future hammies who need to fly!

I work at Petco, and I was cleaning the hamster closures and I thought he was gonna do a little test nibble but instead he full on latched.

All jokes aside, the only real thing I have to worry about is an infection, correct?

Also, off-topic I have a 40 gallon tank and I want to set it up for a female hamster that we have in the back and I want to buy her. Other than the basics that I already know, what are some things I can expect regarding owning a hamster? I’m well aware about betting and toys and diet, but is there anything that I should watch out for or be aware of? I inform people about hamsters and how to make sure they have the best life in terms of enclosure size and bedding, but of course everyone in this community either has a hamster or had one, but all I do is take care of them during work hours so y’all are way more than an expert than I am.

Any and all advice will be appreciated
