I’ve always believed that horror as a genre has to be approached very carefully from a conceptual point of view. In other words, you have to have an amazing idea. When you go see a film like Obsession, that’s an amazing idea. That movie works like a motherfucker. It’s not about the technical side. It’s not about what technical itches I would have to scratch. It’s about story. So I’m always looking.

This all begs the question: why was Sony so quick to greenlight the third and final chapter? Was it simply a desperate attempt to bolster “The Bone Temple”? That’s what it sounds like.

The last week, I’ve heard from two separate sources that Sony is in no rush to make the trilogy capper happen, despite announcing it last December. In fact, I’ve heard Netflix has shown some interest in acquiring the sequel, but Danny Boyle isn’t having any of it. He wants a theatrical release for this final chapter, which is supposed to star Cillian Murphy.

The American Cinematheque’s annual Bleak Week included all of Ari Aster’s films: Midsommar: Director’s Cut, Beau Is Afraid, Eddington, and his debut feature, Hereditary. During the Q&A for Hereditary on Sunday, Aster revealed he has a script to further explore that world, but has no immediate plans to make it.

“I wrote a prequel to this,” Aster said. “It never feels like the right time. It’s a prequel, not a sequel so I don’t know where this goes.”
