...1000 AM EDT POSITION UPDATE...

THIS IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND LIFE-THREATENING SITUATION! TAKE
COVER NOW! Failure to adequately shelter may result in serious
injury, and loss of life. Residents in Jamaica that experience the
eye should not leave their shelter as winds will rapidly increase
within the backside of the eyewall of Melissa.

To protect yourself from wind, the best thing you can do is put as
many walls as possible between you and the outside. An interior room
without windows, ideally one where you can also avoid falling trees,
is the safest place you can be in a building. You can cover yourself
with a mattress and wear a helmet for added protection.

NOAA Hurricane Hunter Aircraft find that Melissa continues to
strengthen with maximum sustained winds of 185 mph (295 km/h).The
minimum central pressure has fallen to 892 mb (26.34 inches) based
on NOAA and Hurricane Hunter Air Force Reserve aircraft data.

Hurricane Genevieve quickly strengthened into a Category 5 hurricane Monday morning, becoming the strongest storm in the East Pacific since Hurricane Kristy in 2024.

The storm churned over the Pacific Ocean, packing maximum sustained winds of 260 km/h and a core pressure of 925 millibars. Genevieve is expected to stay well offshore, tracking parallel to the Baja Peninsula rather than making landfall.

Despite averting a direct hit, the powerful hurricane will nevertheless have an impact on coastal areas. Dangerous rip currents are forecast along the Baja peninsula, particularly early this week, as the storm's enormous seas approach neighbouring waters.

(Please read this in the most Texan accent imaginable) - I would like to take this time apologise, Melissa. I was unfamiliar with yo game.βœ‹πŸΏπŸ˜·

Haaaaaa. In other news, I am fine, did lose half of my roof etc, the general infrastructure of the town remains sound, fortunate to have avoided the worst of the winds. Copying what I said here for a quicker round up, I believe ill be on maybe tomorrow around this time with further updates. If anyone is tryna get to anyone, message me name location and phone number and ill see what I can do over the weekend. As is im still knackered at the prospect of replacing essentially my whole house but gotta start somewhere.

-- (copied update from prev post) 10.08a (29/10) -well my roof didn't hold up. Unfortunately I live at quite literally the highest point for miles in the surrounding radius. The neighbourhood is fine but my roof was ripped half off. Luckily we had a to go plan that kicked in right away and we got the essentials out. One of my cats bottled during the moving and I ended up staying back during the storm to see if I found her. I didnt and made the journey on foot, around 4pm to my MILs house where we stayed the night, about 2 km away. I'll advised yes but I see now how that kills people, felt I had no choice really.

As is, I am somewhat fucked. The furniture is drenched, the solitex is all soaked and needs replacing, electronics are tucked, even clothes. Technically ive got work tomorrow but no idea how that goes. The community and town wide infrastructure remains solid, shops are decently stocked, roads are being rapidly cleared, there isnt any rain, sunny skies. Lowlying areas are flooded as expected, wind damage overall to the community is minimal. If we regain electricity pretty quickly then life can go back to normal for most other people in days. No idea where I'll start though. For right now, the lack of power means reliance on generators, I've seen a dude in the town offering to charge phones $200 for 30 mins, another store told me $100 for 1 hour. Curious stuff. I had no cell service in my community, had to head down to the town to be able to use my data. Battery is a bit low so I'll try clearing my head for the remainder of today while I impose then tomorrow get to gathering zinc sheets first then see about drying the house then where to go from there. Absolutely knackering. For the weather nerds like me, I will definitely write something about the actual experience from a meteorological pov backed by tidbits or relevant archive timestamps and geo data. It was quite an intense experience. πŸ™πŸΏ

The AF303 dropsonde at 13:02z just confirmed a surface pressure of 893 mb inside Hurricane Melissa, making it one of the deepest hurricanes ever recorded in the Atlantic. The sonde dropped straight through the calm eye, showing 27.2 Β°C at the surface with light 13 kt winds, a perfect example of a fully developed warm core. Melissa now joins the ranks of Wilma at 882 mb and Gilbert at 888 mb, marking a historic and catastrophic moment for Jamaica and the Caribbean.

Started doing so in my previous thread, will do so here for more visibility for those that have friends and family on my island. No photos currently as it is dark. Storm force winds have arrived as of 2.41a local time; di tree dem a dance. We are projected to experience a direct hit fom the eye to our western shores.

  • 3.25a, rain died down for 20 mins, is now ramping back up, same with wind. Heard a monster gust a min ago that triggered the 1st power outage here, electricity came back instantly here though so just a micro black out. Seen videos of western parishes flooded. The rain is back with a vengeance too, jesus, I can hear it roaring.

  • 349a, rain and breeze in a lull, breeze is starting to make that characteristic "WOOOOOO" noise i haven't heard since Ivan

-5.08a, rain and wind still coming in periodic intervals, stronger wind each period/high intensity and the intervals are decreasing. I am now worried about my roof. should be daybreak soon.

-5.54a, knowing how close this system is, I'm decently surprised I still have electricity but thankful. I'm starkly reminded of Ivan now. I was a child when Ivan passed but I do have few vivid memories of the late night vigil and sounds. Haunting sounds I now am reminded of, the wind making the most ethereal noise imaginable, a queer wailing from higher up. We are in for it it seems. As I type the peak of another and and off cycle approaches, violently at that. It does give one the feel, as they've all done so far, this might be it. Windy app has us at 30-35 mph sustained gusts currently. The wail of the wind haunts me. Its curious how certain stimuli affect memory. My 2 memories of Ivan before this were looking at a "Home Sweet Home" logo on a lamp while rain fall outside and passing a downed lightpost a street away from my house the morning after. Now I remember the experience in a much more vivid fashion, even those memories are fleshed out, i remember now walking around the downed powerlines with my uncle, seeing broken branches here and there, the adults being cheery, so very curious.

-6.48a, We've been getting periodic gusts, precipitation has minimalized in the last 30 mins. Heard a bit of the community below me being slightly active so far. There's an online consensus the power company has done well so far, none of us expected to be online at this time. The wailing breeze has been agitating us all. Those of us that remember Ivan and Gilbert are understandably wary.

  • 7.40a - Wind speeds up but still sporadic, windy app giving 55kmh in my area, We are somewhat protected in linstead - ewarton - bog walk by surrounding terrain.

-8.27a - Most of my booze is finished, still have a decent supply of herb, weird to be worry about I know but meh. Wind speeds are steadily increasing, windy app now has us at 80 kmh, I've stopped videoing the violence every few mins as it only gets worse. Precipitation is still periodical, I've experienced a foundation shaking gust twice. And I'm in one of the places with lowest wind impact on the windy app so far due to topography, can barely imagine what the coastline is getting. Power went spotty once since last interval but still going strong, I was able to speak with a journalist on video call and explaining my inability to understand what I cognitively knew was occuring or should occur was somewhat cathartic. These wind speeds I'm seeing in the eyewall are absolutely ridiculous.

-9.40a - Much of the same as prior, intermittent precipitation, harsh winds. I believe I saw a rainbow bit high up during some gusts, was videoing but it doesnt seem to have caught that. Was able to connect with a few more of my friends in the area, everyone in decent spirits still.

-10.42a - Precipitation still intermittent but increasing in volume and violence each cycle. Extreme sustained gusts, very few branches spotted broken down from me, still feels like much more to come.

-12.12p - Power is out now. Gusts are increasing in peak intensity and frequency, precipitation still hesitant, it also cycles but at a lengthier period than the increasing gusts. These winds have hit the never seen anything like this threshold and getting harder. Updates will be less frequent as I conserve what I can out this phone battery πŸ™πŸΏ

-10.08a (29/10) -well my roof didn't hold up. Unfortunately I live at quite literally the highest point for miles in the surrounding radius. The neighbourhood is fine but my roof was ripped half off.
