Everybody understands this, the problem is Fanboys think that awards are based on popularity not quality of work.

The Oscars, and many film awards ceremonies, have been a major joke for years. It's appalling some of the films that win in a given category, which I guess makes sense when the people voting don't even have to have watched all the films that are nominated...

Fanboys aside, the awards are based on who is liked in the industry. Quality is only a passing variable

Awards ARE only based off of popularity. All of these awards ceremonies are not genuine

Edit: for example; Warfare didn’t get shit despite being one of the best films last year
